What is the secret to making a dishwasher cabinet? One with only the appliance under the counter.

@MarkMc posted a plan in another thread about this topic, but there was no explanation about how things get done.  Here is the plan he posted, but with the addition of a dishwasher symbol I made by importing a Sketchup model of a GE Monogram one at 18" width.

 

In Mark's plan, he has a cabinet in which is a DW, one from the Chief manufacturer bonus library.  The cabinet has no sides, no back, no fronts, no toekick, no nothing.  It is just blank space with a countertop over.  If I try to make such a cabinet, I fail.  Going to the fronts section of the cab spec, I delete everything.  Separations, door, drawerfront.  I specify the cab as framed just as Mark has it.  I specify the stiles as 0".  I cannot get the cab to build blank, but always end up with a back and sides.

 

I want a "cabinet" that is blank like Mark's but has the 18" width needed for this Monogram DW.  What do I do?

I haven't opened the zip file, but have you tried selecting 'filler' in the general options of the cabinet.



This should turn off everything except the front

I did not try that but it is not checked filler in Mark's.

I compared the object properties of his vs me dropping the CA chef series dishwasher into a cabinet

 

these are where his differ...that look like it might be what he did. The first one below is "side type" from the screenshot I put above (which is the chef series wiht right side set to none, and you can see the right side missing.

Chief's training video shows @scottharris placing a DW into a cabinet and he says the appliance replaces the cabinet, but it does not, really.  The appliance symbol is positioned so that its front faces are outside the face of cabinet.

 

 

@MarkMc does something completely different and I want to learn how to do what he does, because it models the appliance the way it actually sits, that being in a void the width of the the appliance.

isnt that what I showed above, take off the side and back panels of the cabinet, and the toe kick? you are just left with the countertop, which is what it would be IRL

FWIW, in the past I could not see the dishwasher "cabinet" in a material list or cabinet schedule until I realized this from a post of mine in 2020:

Not sure what you are doing. The only thing I find may be different-start with framed and separation set to zero, then place the appliance in front. Then no top, no bottom, sides and back to none, toe to 0,0 then uncheck.

I managed to do with your symbol and then with symbols adjusted.

Plan has yours on left, then adjust to sit on floor, then adjusted to floor and resize within the toe kick.

NOTE that as I was wrapping up realized the the door on that dishwasher will sit proud of the adjacent cabinets. See below.

 

I only did this because you asked and to see what happened. I never use this method. I always have custom countertops so no need there. 

Normally I make these from cabinets without using an appliance at all. If appropriate I make a door symbol by deleting surfaced from the appliance and converting to symbol. That gets the look and the counter along with correct spacing between cabinets. In this case where to resize height is important and I did not look up specs and haven't done an 18 in a long time so that's up to you. Included top right of plan.

 

Alternatively, I might place as freestanding object and fill in the countertop. In that case the symbol needs adjustment- example bottom right.
