Why is my roof framing looking so wacky (he says, as he leads with his chin...)?

I'm doing a VERY simple 12' x 19'- 6" kitchen addition for a friend, with a swooping gull-wing eave to marry into a couple of roof pitches:

and a cathedral ceiling inside:

Easy, but I just opened up the framing and got something that like a pagoda from the Meiji dynasty:

Can't figure out what I did wrong or how to correct - HELP!

Thanks,

Tim

I'll ask the obvious -- are you auto building, or manually building framing?

Hi Eric,

I might be out of line here, but I think once the bottom section of the roof is curved, you leave the world where auto build is allowed.

Before you go further with the roof shape and its underside look, you might want to talk with the builder and his framing sub.

Kickup roofs are usually somewhat more subtle than what you show and the curved kick is overframed, thus there would be no convex curve to the vaulted ceiling below.

There are plenty of guys on YouTube showing how these get framed.

I think the roof has to be manual in order to make it curved like this, but the framing can be auto or manual.  If it's manual, you may need to rebuild it or manually move it if you changed the roof after you first built it.

I tried a simple test plan and the roof framing was reasonable, not perfect but at least it wasn't offset like yours is showing.  If rebuilding the framing doesn't solve the problem, then you need to post the plan.

Folks - THANKS!!!  Sorry - I had this up on my second screen, but comments just came through (7 hours later).  I don't understand what i was doing incorrectly with the chat, but I see them now.

Anyway, GOOD news: I went back over the addition roof and, with just a few dimension confirmations and tweaks, the darn thing worked.

I've attached a screen grab and would add the drawing file but it's 25.1 MB.

For a little house.

Does that seem excessive?

Re: file size, that's normal.  If you need to attach a plan in the future, you can try zipping it first and if that doesn't work, you could try making a copy and stripping it down by deleting everything that is not needed to see the problem.  And if that still doesn't work, then you have to post a link to some other shared online location, like dropbox.

As for the framing, your newer picture looks more like what I was seeing.  I noticed that some of the end rafters did not reach the middle ridge board on mine too.  Not sure why, but if you care enough, you might want to send it to Chief because it looks like a bug.
