Chiefer
Thanks everyone for the feedback. Tuned down the focal blur. Still learning vray materials and lighting and trying to keep render times to about 20 min. Nice render. There's a color correction button at the bottom of the vfp window in vray, http://help.chaosgroup.com/vray/help/maya/150R1/vfb_index.html You can use it to adjust final render without going to a photo editor, much like the image properties in Chief. PS. That scene and resolution can be rendered in about 2-3 minutes.
keithhe
Rich_Winsor, on 22 Dec 2014 - 01:40 AM, said: I found the fittings on 3D Warehouse under pipe fittings. They had several sizes and included alignment marks which they claimed would facilitate making the connections. It all looked good on paper but when I imported the symbols they wouldn't perform as advertised. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears and lots of tweaking X, Y & Z coordinates to line things up. Luckily I only had to do one branch and then mirror it to the other side or I might still be pecking away. I don't know what the deal with 3D Warehouse is. Everybody says go there and every time I do I have some type of problem with the imported symbols. I think it's about time I take the bull by the horns and put some serious study into rolling my own. Rich, that was my experience too, but I eventually just gave up as it was just an experiment and nothing I needed. I have found some good stuff at 3dwarehouse, but sometimes things are goofed up. I usually just fix it there, then bring it in. For the most part, I've been able to fix the items I've needed where there was a problem. Examples: Grouped items I simply explode there and bring in individually, but usually it an orientation thing and I simply turn it the way I need it and then import. dr0591
Re: 3D warehouse items -- it helps if, when you import, you change the origin coordinates 0, 0, 0. This doesn't fix every problem, but can make them easier to work with.
keithhe
Thanks Dr. K. I've never tried that, but will try that in the future. You can add this to the syllabus for the Dr. K February Workshop??
Rich_Winsor
Personally I don't know what the moaning and groaning about the stairs tool is all about. I don't see anything wrong with the stairs. Here is an offering from my impossible construction series of images I like to call "Watch Your Step". This is a 100% genuine non-edited, non-retouched, non-exported for rework Chief generated image.

keithhe
Rich, MC would be proud of you. Awesome !!!! That being said, I see a problem with your plan. No handrail. People could fall up and hurt themselves. No way this would pass code, other than perhaps DCRA, but even they tend to prefer handrails, but still optional. Rich_Winsor
Did you model all those buildings? I should live so long. No, I did an image search for cityscapes to use as a background and found that image. It wasn't what I was originally looking for but I thought it was cool and it had approximately the right perspective to use for the shot. I've got no idea how the original was made. Besides there is no way for the inspector to get up there to check for handrails. Actually I've been experimenting with constructing some handrails but with the geometry of the situation I don't know if I can pull it off. Grass is VrayFur with a grass map. Actually renders very fast. Was about 9:40 render time altogether.
Chiefer
Thanks for the link. Seems like I learn something new everyday. Now where is that 2-3 minute render button? Here's a quick raytrace - 59 sec. Try SolidRocks by Jerome -download the trial version. Mention my name if you are buying the plugin, you might get a discount. Nothing in the 59 SECOND RANGE..., but not bad for a free 3ds plug-in. Did a test with the south hampton kitchen and doesn't look bad. Haven't given up on vray yet. Although it does make me want to punt my computer some days.

I am able to get similar results with Vray if I use vrayphysicalcamera but render time increases significantly. This one took about 3 minutes. McQueen3D
Not that they're as nice as what I just saw, but I have some new renderings on Houzz (see link in signature). Has anyone come up with a good grass texture/rendering method yet for Phoebe?

Rich_Winsor
So.... a couple of cheesy 3D Warehouse birds didn't do it for anybody (why am I constantly disappointed with their content?). I thought the Chief generated power lines were pretty effective. Well then, try this one on for size. A tribute to the Monty Python boys that I call "The doors are always open at the Department of Redundancy Department.".
