Railing Mayhem

I am trying to place 4 railings 5' each at the end of the carport

I set them to 5' long and when I attach them to the house or the center post the length changes

I touch them the length changes - very frustrating :(

How the Hell do I get them to stay 5' long ???

and stay where I want them ???

I would like them to show in the "open" position

I am just working on a draft of where the fencing, gates and railings might go for a house I am trying to buy

I just want it quick and dirty - don't want to make it perfect - that will come if I actually buy  the house

any suggestions on how to place these railings and be able to tweak without mayhem ensuing ???

I only have the core libraries that come with Chief X8 is there a library I should consider downloading ?

with X6 I flushed the 30,000+ symbols I had since I had retired

Chopsaw:

I skimmed the video but not sure it address my issue of trying to place basic railings

without having to be "perfect" about it

IOW, I want to be able to drop 4 5' railings and be done

no need for newels and balusters and top rails etc ???

4 railings in and done

is there something in the video I am missing ???

Lew, If it is just a straight rail set the "Spacing" in the Newel/Balusters tab to 60" and you should be fine for a 20' railing wall but Michael's video shows what to do if there are interaction issues like I thought you said you had.

ok, thanks

I really don't want to mess with making a railing symbol

not sure I remember how to do that ?

place chief railing in a cad detail then make a symbol ?

really amazed I can't just drop 4 railings in the plan and be done with it -  sigh :(

Chopsaw: I will try your suggestion

more likely I will have my friend Joe do it :(

Ok, I found a fast and easy solution

I had tried dropping gates in before starting this post but Chief wouldn't place them

now I placed a section of fence from house to center post and center post to storage area

I could then drop the gates in sized to 10' - for double - show in open position

changed gate to "planked" style

a few clicks and in and done

I wish placing railings was that easy ...

It's really not hard.  Just draw your 5' railing in a blank plan, create a camera view, and use the "Convert to Symbol" tool.

That's because you can't just drop a railing into a plan and expect it not to work like a railing.  Railings are designed to be connected to other railings and walls.  The best way to make it not behave like a railing is to create a symbol out of it.

ok, I get it

I solved the issue by using fencing and gates

yet, it was still very frustrating to set the railing to 5'

and next time I looked it had changed length :(

maybe there should be a way to lock the length of a wall segment ???
