Yep, got it. Thanks.

When I use the Regular Polygon tool (CAD>Boxes>Regular Polygon) I can only insert it into an open area of the drawing. If I move the cursor over (or close to) existing geometry or objects, the polygon disappears and when I click to insert the polygon the command terminates. Why do I care? Because often when I'm inserting a polygon I want to snap it directly to a known point on another piece of geometry. Is this the default behavior for this command?

Thanks for the clarification. Common enough, even outside of California.
-
What's a California Tie-in? Do you mean the method of hip framing?
-
If you have the room to provide a large heel height, you could probably achieve a true cathedral with sloping parallel chord trusses.
-
Activate the truss tool: Build>Framing>Floor/Ceiling Truss Now hold down the shift key and window around all the floor trusses - they will all be selected. This behavior works for all kinds of Chief objects; first activate the tool, then shift select.

Click on the Drawing Sheet Icon, or use the menu: View>Drawing Sheet.

What's The Best Way To Copy Some Finishes From One Plan To Another?
rlackore replied to zowie123's topic in General Q & A
Jim, The OP wanted a quick way to transfer a few materials from one plan to the other. 3D>Materials>Plan Materials (3 clicks) Select the material>Add to Library (2 clicks) Open the new plan, if it isn't open already (1 double click) Select the library browser (1 click) Select the material in the library browser (1 click) - you automatically have the spray can Click on the object to apply the material (1 click) 9 clicks 1 right click and 1 left click to delete the material from your bloated user library -

If the plan is stored on the same computer (where your user library is) you don't even have to export/import - the materials will just reside in your user library. I don't understand how it could be any easier than that. -
Transparent Fill For Electrical Labels- How?

Curt you are correct. I missed that entirely. Thank you. -

That checkbox applies only to text boxes, which most labels don't use. AFAIK, only the Room Label uses a text box. -
Tools>Material List>Material List Polygon Edit the polygon for the shape that matches the extent of the flooring. Open the polygon's dbx, clear all checkboxes, then select just the flooring checkbox to assign that material to the polygon.

Save them to a folder in your user library, then export the folder as a library file, and import the library file into your new plan. -
Yeah, I understand. What I meant is that the basement is already subdivided into a whole bunch of rooms and I'd have to move a whole bunch of furred walls to select all the zero-area rooms.
-
Kind of works. Problem is I've go so many walls and openings and intersections that I can't do this unless I basically start from scratch. I'd already tried this, and it's probably my best bet. Unfortunately, I'll have to break the foundation wall in several places to assign new interior materials. Maybe I'll try modifying the foundation wall definition with a zero-thickness layer and assign it the interior finish. The strange thing is that not all of the basement rooms have this problem. It seems like CA should reference the innermost finish wall surface of a room to generate the Room Finish Schedule.
-
I'm really struggling with trying to put together a Room Finish Schedule. This is my first attempt, so doubtless I'm just being stupid. I'm furring out the basement walls, and when the furred walls are defined in the Wall Specification dbx as Structure>Furred Walls, the Wall Material displayed is for the concrete foundation walls: If I try to fix this problem by defining the furred walls as Structure>Frame Through, the Wall Material displayed is for the furred walls, but a zero-area room is created that cannot be selected to exclude from the schedule: Any insight would be appreciated.

No stretching in Chief. Select all the objects on one half of the plan and move them 1 inch. Adjust everything as necessary.

Labels In Uppercase Or Looking For An All Caps Blueprint Font
rlackore replied to Athenian_CAD's topic in General Q & A
I don't think uppercase has ever been written in stone - it's just the easiest way to teach consistent lettering technique. I have a copy of the 1932 edition of Architectural Graphic Standards. Drawing notations are hand lettered in sentence case (though select words are capitalized). Drawing titles and headings are title case. Ching uses sentence case in most of his published references. My boss, who may be described as an "artsy fartsy" architect, loves all lower case. -
Rats. Scott, you're mostly right. However, I've discovered that you can view two different plan anno/layersets at the same time if you cylce through the windows in the correct order. Right now I've got the same plan opened twice, and in one window I'm VIEWING my 1/4" Finish Plan Anno/Layerset, and in my other window I'm WORKING IN my 1/4" Demo Plan Anno/Layerset. Both windows indicate the Demo Plan Anno/Layerset, and as soon as I click on the window with the Finish Plan, it reverts to the Demo Plan, but at least it allows me to use one window as a reference for the other. Limited in usefulness, I admit, but interesting.

OMG! Why didn't I ever try this? I've always wished to be able to "duplicate" a tabbed window (like in a web browser) so I can work on two floors of the same plan at the same time. Okay, I just tried this, and it's awesome! I can even have a different anno/layerset active for my two different plans! Shame on you for keeping this a secret, Doug. This is an unbelievable productivity boost! I can't stop using exclamation marks!

File>Import>Import 3d Symbol Select the .skp file and click Open Category: Millwork (use advanced options if you want/need) Open the Railing Specification dbx for the railing you want to change. Rail Style>Specify Railing>Panels Newels/Balusters>NewelsPosts>Width=0"; Height=whatever you want, Offset=0", Spacing=80" Panels>Type>click the Library button and select the panel symbol in your user catalog There are some options you can play around with to get exactly what you want, such as raising the bottom rail, etc.

Still no attachment.

It's got something to do with the floor being a monolithicslab supplied by the room below. Uncheck those and the problem goes away.
-
Like this? Just rotate the pattern to the angular equivalent of the roof pitch, and do the same for the texture file (though in my experience the texture file might have to be rotated in the opposite direction, not sure why).

If I understand what you're going for, In your garage definition, lower the stem wall top © to -2 1/4"; set the stem wall (I) to 2'. This gives you equal stem wall heights and a sill plate at the garage. Don't know why the sill plate won't build at the house, though.
