Nauti1: welcome back, I use this link to search the old forum not sure how to browse the old forum - maybe login ? if you click on most of the other things you will be taken to the new forum http://www.chieftalk.com/search.php Lew
-
Nauti1: that is excellent you are lucky as at some point vintage software just doesn't work on newer OS's Lew

Chris: not sure you can turn autosave off totally ??? maybe now it can be - but versions ago it couldn't I set it for minimal saves and just let it do it's thing there have been a few times where I have need to use an archived version very rare I do my own saves - sometimes every few minutes if I am completing a task I don't want to do again I do a double "save as" the first has the date and time as part of the file name - this is for backups the second is to the primary file names - this keeps layout and plan in sync and allows me to go to a backup if needed I have undo set for 5 - beyond that I can't really keep track what I was doing and want to undo BACKUP FILE NAME: 123_OAK_REMOD_180317_1710_LBX10.plan remod or model or alto1 etc for layout LAYPS or LAYCP - ps = permit set cp = client presentation PRIMARY FILE NAME: 123_OAK_REMOD_LBX10.plan and 123_OAK_LAYPS_LBX10.layout doing a double save takes seconds and works very well for me Lew

Copying items from old plan to a new one ?
lbuttery replied to Larry_Sweeney's topic in General Q & A
you should be able to copy/paste but could also block the items then save in library then in new plan place from the library that the items would be available for any future plans Lew -
CA highly recommends a good gaming video card for running Chief Lew

I ALWAYS do my own "save as" I don't rely on Chief I spent 30 years as a Systems Analyst/Programmer and I rely on myself One or two times I've needed to find a plan in the archives usually after I'm working on a plan and get distracted and come back hours later or even the next day Lew
-
Joey: ray tracing uses cpu ram - so I think the more the merrier renders use GPU ram - so the more ram on a good gaming video card - the better beyond that I have no advice Lew
-
I agree with Scott go for it from everything I have heard since 2005 is that Chief is way better than Softplan Lew
-
Larry: go with the 64-bit version hardly anything uses 32-bit anymore ... Lew
-
CA has a monthly payment plan - so check that out Lew
-
as Chopsaw stated - Chief is too complicated to offer backwards compatablity the 3D models are too complex - unlike 2D plans which are just lines Lew
-
I've heard them called "zero lot line" walls Lew
-
as stated check with local building dept may require two separate walls with an air gap between them besides fire there are also sound transmission issues Lew
-
this is a response to a question in another thread: Steven: turn off any layers not desired to be seen in the symbol take a 3D view of the building then use the convert to symbol tool and save the building in the library then import into the site plan and locate as needed see posts #7, #11, #13 in this thread - download plan from post #13 Lew
-
Steve: I will start a new thread Lew
-
Melissa: I prefer to keep each building in a separate plan and then create the building as a 3D symbol and store in the library then create a master site plan and place the building symbols as needed Lew
-
see this suggestion for methods of having fractions display or not I prefer to have them not display most of the time I try to model to 1/16 for as-builts - for new construction aim for 1" when printing the final layout I display only to the nearest 1" unless it is a "critical" area like cabinets or some other tight requirement Lew

Why would the software arbitrarily override my desire for the Divider to remain zero width? Chris: I agree - at a minimum Chief should issue a warning that it will need to make the change Lew
-
Glenn: Johnny is an experienced user - if he is having issues then it would seem to be a problem maybe not, but sure looks like one then Michael: has a nice workaround - if there is no problem then why is a workaround needed ? Lew

The Problem: Does anyone know why room dividers often (id say more often than not in my situations) revert to being invisible walls of the same thickness as the default interior wall style? Its like the room divider tool doesn't even actually work. The Workaround: They do that whenever there is a structural change between rooms. To address this problem I recommend one of 2 things... 1. Change the default setup for your room divider to make it .01" thick (either in the general tab or in the wall definition itself). 2. Make yourself your own custom room divider wall type that is a single layer Insulation/Air Gap...that is also .01" thick. I use this type of wall more often than I use the true 0" thick room divider. Its far more useful for all sorts of things. The 0" room divider still has its place though. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************* Hmmm, sounds like a problem with a workaround to me seems like a fix is needed somewhere ???
