  1. ALWAYS SAVE FILES AND FOLDERS OUTSIDE OF DROP BOX Tommy: I agree, save to your own folders first then at the end of a session save to Dropbox Lew
  2. Michael: I have been asking for a recordable macro language like VBA for over a decade long before Chief introduced a lame version of Ruby in X4 I have had many discussions on this forum and with CA about VBA's capabilities vs Ruby If you are interested do some searches on this forum and the old forum (if it still exists) My post now is just a "tickler" reminder of what I would like to see thus if CA should read this thread ??? Lew
  3. There's so much more data available in the model that isn't exposed to Ruby. If it was all available, I could create a set of "fully annotated" ConDocs in just a fraction of the time it takes currently. with this and the ability to record macros as you click away would indeed make Ruby very powerful if only Chief's Ruby were like VBA for Excel, Word, etc Lew
  4. I recommend a naming system so you know who last worked on a plan my partner and I used this system 123_OAK_MODEL_180113_1535_LB_X9,plan MODEL or REMOD or ALT01 etc etc etc LAYPS or LAYCP LAY01 etc etc etc where PS = permit set, where CP = client presentation LB = my initials or my partners initials JK each time do a "save as" with this naming for the backup then do a second "save as" to keep plan and layout in sync using 123_MAIN_X9.plan or .layout very quick to do a double "save as" Lew
  5. send a report to tech support as they need to know about this Lew
  6. Hi: CA won't have any - ever - way too old I donated mine already to someone who lost theirs CA allows donations - not sales - to verified owners of a license I asked for $5 to cover mailing hopefully someone will work with you and CA to get you one however, another choice is to create a search on EBAY for Chief buy another X1 with the dongle or maybe even upgrade to a newer version I would skip X3 due to a horrible library system that required subscriptions etc I would go for at least X4 as it has annotation sets and lots of other nice features each release brings nice new features you will also find "hassles" trying to run ancient software on newer PC's EDIT: you should upgrade to X10 - anyone in business should keep current for many, many reasons CA now has a rent to own package Lew
  7. On a complex roof, it is often faster to do it all manually. this is up for debate ... first let me state that I don't do roofs, other than very simple ones anything beyond that I send to my friend/partner In the Chief Intermediary class the instructor stated and demonstrated that even very complex roofs can be done via the autobuild Chief recommends starting auto then going manual - "as necessary" others recommend starting manual and staying manual Lew
  8. Mick: it is these inconsistencies that can drive a Chiefer to drink ;( Lew
  9. If defaults (and other settings) can be exported/imported Then why not preferences ? It looks like everything is available already ? Lew
  10. I thought defaults and preferences could be saved as templates ??? Lew
  11. There really should be a Forum for EACH Version..... I think that would be overkill then you would be having to post - "sorry, you are in the wrong forum" all the time Lew
  12. yes, download X9 and get the latest updates for it then download X10 beta you can have both on the same computer that way if you need X9 you will have it after X10 is "live" you can uninstall X9 if you no longer need it Lew
  13. I don't think so there is for the private beta but CA wants public discussion now Lew
  14. Larry: sorry, at the time I posted there wasn't an indication about the public beta I deleted my post but not before you saw it Lew
  15. according to Chief's license you have to keep or destroy prior versions if they have been upgraded I have donated the hardware key, with CA's permission to owners who have lost/damaged their keys I suppose the same could be done with manuals etc if they go to a current owner check with CA's for details Lew
  16. You can get a Win98 machine on eBay Chris: why Win98 ??? Ver 9.5 can run on XP and Vista and probably on Win7 Lew
  17. my Disto was from 2005 - I don't think it had a fractions setting I wrote all dims in 16ths - that is 3/4 was 12/16 etc that way I could do the math much easier than using mix of 1/16 - 1/8 - 1/4 - 1/2 I wish the US would just go Metric Lew
  18. I also want to be treated fairly as a loyal customer. Yes, it would be nice if they offered a discount for renewing early or something Lew
  19. It does sound like its a bad deal to stay with SSA Having SSA gets you access to certain library items its gets you priority tech support at no additional cost probably some other benefits if you don't use any of that then it may be worth it $ wise to skip an upgrade you also lose out on all the new features while skipping and then end up pay for them anyways when you finally upgrade it is a choice I prefer to stay current Lew
  20. I bought mine in 2005 $700+ lots of features - I don't use hardly any of them its accurate to 1/16" at 300' they have a $99 model that is accurate for 1/4" at 100' depending on your needs that may be sufficient they have some models that can import into Chief - check them out very handy device - I wouldn't think of measuring a house without one but I also use a tape for small distances Lew

  22. can you do a complete backup export ? if so, do that then close the plan using windows task manager to force close if necessary then close Chief and maybe even restart or reboot your PC then try again ??? your file name looks fairly long but I have bad eyes and can't read all the characters in it try a much shorter file name and save to the Pictures folder as your folder path structure may be too deep/long ??? Lew
  23. check your file name for special characters etc only a few are allowed in file names https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/905231/information-about-the-characters-that-you-cannot-use-in-site-names--fo Contact CA's tech support they can advise best Lew
  24. check out some of these 100+ threads on the topic https://www.chiefarchitect.com/search/?default_tab=all&q=disto Lew
