Just starting to work with X10 and noticed right away that opening a dbx is slower then X9. Any others notice this? While it isn't dramatic, it is enough to notice and be annoyed by it. If you have been working with X10 for a while, you may need to go back to X9 to compare. I could list my computer specs, etc, but this is on the same computer comparing X9 to X10, may not be relevant. However, for full disclosure, here are my specs: Custom Built (just a few months ago) Windows 10 Intel i7-7700K 4.2 (overclocked-liquid cooled) RAM: 32GB DDR4-3200 Samsung 960 PRO M.2 GTX 1080 8GB (liquid cooled)

I agree Eric, but that isn't what is happening. Per my post, my windows are moving at 1/16" even though it is set to 1". More details in my original post. Thanks for the reply.

Working on a small detached garage. I have my grid snaps set to 1". I place a window or door in a wall (interior or exterior). I select the window, grab the middle handle to drag it down the wall, and it is not following the 1" grid, but moving at 1/16". I verified the snaps were not causing this. In fact, I tried it with snaps off and grid on with no change. This is not how X9 behaves, which follows the grid snaps of 1". If I grab the edge of the door or window to resize it, it does follow the 1" increment. Just moving it is not following it. I tried other items like cabinets and they follow the 1" increments as expected. This is my first use of X10 and got pretty far before noticing this because I typically use dimensions, arrow movements or the transform dialogue to move things, but this was more of a visual placement to see what I liked. Questions: Is this how X10 behaves for others? What new setting needs adjusted to get the window or door to move on the grid?

when ready to produce final docs, just turn off the auto refresh and delete the ones you don't want. Or don't use auto and draw what you want manually.

I concur with David, I get that message when opening older Chief files.

I had a similar problem recently and a knowledge base article fixed it for me, see if it helps you: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01866/message-the-default-template-was-not-found.html

Hmmm, i'm not aware of a way to remove a referenced file within the referenced file dbx or as a batch. If linking the referenced file to the new file to the layout isn't what you are after, then what I do is turn on the borders and then go through each page and delete them. For me, this happens when doing a 'save as' but then the file changes and the referenced layout is now just showing white because the plan has moved, reversed, etc. So turning the layout borders helps to see these and then adjust or delete as needed. If no one chimes in with a batch way to do that, would be a good suggestion. All the best.

Yes, that is the purpose of the index color...just too lazy to explain it. But to redeem myself, the reasons for the other settings I have: I take the fills off because the fixtures or other fills will be whited out and it dominates the black screen of AutoCAD. I choose an earlier version of AutoCAD because not everyone has the most up to date version and this ensures they can open it without me having to go back and re-export it. index colors: you explained. I'm sure the help file explains it better and in more detail. (but again, too lazy to look it up). All the best.

Melissa (name?), I followed the same steps, however, I have a few different settings. Without taking more time to investigate, not sure why yours didn't work the first time. Eric's suggestion of using the viewer is a good idea. I check all my exported cad files before I send them out.

I opened it in AutoCAD and it was empty. I opened my new file in AutoCAD and it is there, all though, as usually (based on 0,0), one has to 'zoom extents' in AutoCAD to see it. I didn't put anymore time into why it isn't showing up, just created a new one...path of least resistance.

The dxf you attached is empty. I just did an export and it seemed to work fine though. Not sure what steps you are taking and why it isn't coming through. See if attached works for you. Butterfly A.dxf

Thank you Rene, I'll look into that as well. Appreciate you feedback.

Thanks Lew & Johnny, really appreciate your input. I will put some time into that and report back. Thanks!

I put this in Q&A as to gain a larger audience. While it may not be directly related to Chief, it is directly related to running the business with Chief, which keeps Chief in business. This was brought up and better explained by Rod a while back: https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/14875-external-software-for-project-management/ Looking for input on how each of you track your jobs: priority, assignment to employees, due dates, tracking, notes, etc. I currently use a spreadsheet with some macros, but pretty simplistic. wondering if there is some good software for this. I've researched some software that is overkill for what i'm looking for, but perhaps it can be simpler. Any input is appreciated as i'm sure others will benefit from this as well.

Great find Michael.

Bryan, Without looking at the file, one thing to try is sending it to a pdf and see if the output is correct in the pdf. I recently had an issue somewhat related where the chief layout didn't print elevation patterns correctly, but sending to pdf, then printing from pdf gave me the proper output. I recommend sending to tech support so they can figure out if there is a bug so that they can fix it for the benefit of all. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Print to PDF distorts portions of the drawing

I agree, 3rd party should work. It has been reported. Reference linked thread where Chief comments. I've also had individual conversations with them about it.- 11 replies

Did using Chief's built in pdf printer solve your issue? (see Eric's post above for the printer to use).- 11 replies

Print to PDF distorts portions of the drawing
BenPalmer replied to StudConstruction's topic in General Q & A
Are you printing with 3rd party such as Adobe Acrobat DC, or using Chief's built in 'save as pdf'? The issue only comes up when 3rd party, and only in the areas immediately around the transparant fills. Sometimes the fills work fine. In my testing, it happens more often with angled or circular fills vs right angles. Something to consider. Glad it is working for most. I use transparent fills in my walls so i don't have to do all the gray scaling layersets and hoops, and so it happens 99% of the time for me UNLESS I use Chief's built in 'save as pdf', then it works perfect everytime. But then you lose some of the extra features of the 3rd party apps. Hope that helps those who are running into issues.- 11 replies

I've done some stuff in Yavapai, but too busy right now with Phoenix area stuff to take it on. If you need a local guy, PM me and I can recommend someone. Good luck.

Help - Is Intel HD Graphics 620 enough for X9?

Help - Is Intel HD Graphics 620 enough for X9?
BenPalmer replied to Tristan89's topic in Sales Related Questions
While Intel graphics will work, you will notice some lag, especially in 3D. For about 500 or so more, if possible, and looking through the same website you provided for NZ, the following link lists some better options with discrete graphics and also include an SSD drive which will help speed things up as well. I'd get at least the 256 drive capacity so you can get your chief files on it along with all the Window files. Still a little tight, but considering the budget, a good option. If you can increase the budget more, then a 512gb drive would be great. The HDDs are likely 5400rpm drives and so a little slow. Probably worth swapping that out on your own for a SSD drive in the future. You can pick up a SSD drive for a decent price these days, but depending on the manufacturer, that can void the warranty. So things to consider. https://www.pbtech.co.nz/category/computers/laptops/gaming-laptops?fs=2856086 Best of luck. -
Rod, I respectfully disagree. Not sure what size homes you do, or the level of detail. But I can bring an old Chief 9, 10 or other version forward and be working full tilt on it in about 20 mintues, after cleaning things up, importing annotation sets, wall definitions, changing different defaults, settings, etc.. The only side effect is the plan can be a little sluggish when working in 3D, but I don't blame that on Chief. I expect some hiccups going back that far, but it works pretty good. Good enough that I keep doing it. If I were to start over on a plan, it would take a good day to recreate floor plan and elevations (more or less depending on plan). Not too mention all the finishing details, saving me several days into possibly a week or so. Way faster to bring a plan forward in 20 minutes of clean up and some sluggishness then starting over. I do this regularly, so I have a system down, and I have a huge library of plans to call from going back to 1998. (would love to record this transition process in a macro, which would make the transition even faster). It's not an occasional thing. This lost feature is a big handicap to my business.

I generally try to keep the center of the project around 0,0, or at least that is the way I start, but close enough. Main reason for this is if you ever reverse the plan using Chief's reverse tool vs Edit Area or other ways to do it, it reflects about 0,0 vs the center of the house. So this saves problems including saved cameras, terrain, etc. I have a large library of plans that I reuse and recreate and have learned this from trial and error. But as other mentioned, in the general area of 0,0 is good.
