X7 Poor Print Quality Using Transparent Fills In Walls
BenPalmer replied to BenPalmer's topic in General Q & A
Yeah, I've done the color/greyscale print in the past, but found that the colors I was using were too light and therefore my line weights were not true to what was set. I played around with darker colors and line weights, but I admit I was too lazy to spend the time. My pdf maker has a greyscale option as well, but I get the same problem as mentioned above with the colors I'm using. Let me know if I'm missing something. I know some have a seperate layer set for printing, which seems like an unnecessary extra step and prone to errors in case a layer is inadvertently left off, or added on. If I'm missing something on this process, please elaborate. This fill option seems like a perfect solution if it will print as vector and not raster. I'm not sure what is triggering the raster. I put a cad box with 50% transparent fill on the screen to see if any transparent fill causes it, but it didn't. Maybe I need to make the box bigger? Or it is specific to the walls? Not sure. Hopefully Chief will test this more and get it fixed so we can use it. I love the transparency fill, and understand it is a new feature and there are bound to be kinks to work out. That is why I'm reporting this so the hopefully the final release will have this fixed. PS: Nincinus, love your profile pic -
X7 Leader Lines Not Connecting To Each Other
BenPalmer replied to BenPalmer's topic in General Q & A
Kevin, you nailed it, that is exactly what is happening. Didn't catch that. I haven't done beta since version 10, remind me how to report a bug? Perry, thanks for the suggestion. I will use this until they fix it. This method is slower because it only has one line and I need to break it to get the 2 segments, but at least they are on the same layer and stay connected. I miss the old way version 9 and earlier had the 2 segments built into that add arrow feature. Thanks everyone! -
I've been playing around with using solid filled walls with a transparency of 50%. Looks really nice, and is behaving nicely with other layers that cross over the top of them such as text, dimensions, etc. However, I noticed when I print, Chief appears to be treating it like a raster image (print image function) vs a vector image (normal print function). For example: when I print a plan with walls that are solid filled with no transparency, the lines are crisp vector views as expected in the pdf when zooming in. Once I add transparency to the walls, the entire drawing becomes pixelated raster views when zooming in. It appears Chief is treating items that have a transparency fill as raster vs vector. I'll attach a quick print out of a small casita plan. I am using both Adobe Acrobat Pro, and PDF Factory Pro and getting the same results in both. I did have to increase the down-sampling of images to ensure the quality didn't get too pixelated. Another hint that this is being treated as 'print image' is that it is creating a white box border around the plan and cutting my logo off in the top right corner of the attachment. Curious if others are getting this. I can attach a plan as well, but would prefer trying your own quick plan to see if your settings get the same results or not. Print-Sample.pdf

If I have a text box already in the plan that I now want to add a leader to: I select the leader tool, drag horizontally from the edge of the text box, un-click, then drag another segment at an angle to the desired finishing location. In X6 and previous, these two arrows would connect and have one arrow head at the end of the connected lines, but they don't seem to be doing that in X7 beta. Edit Object parts is not active. All snaps are on. Is there a setting I am missing? Are others getting these results?

I guess that's why I don't mind the questions because I don't read them well enough. -
Why We Have So Many Questions On These Forums
BenPalmer replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in General Q & A
I don't see any reason to do anything about it. The question itself implies a problem, which I don't feel there is. My problem is that the person asking the question often gets attacked, criticized and belittled. Totally unnecessary and unprofessional. Isn't the purpose of this Q&A forum to ask Questions and get Answers? If someone doesn't like a question, or feel it is a repeat, or too simple then don't answer it, and don't comment either. I just skip past some posts because I'm either too busy, or don't feel like explaining it (lazy or know someone else deals with that aspect more then I do, or whatever. I don't see any problem with people asking questions even if some would consider it simple or a repeat. I don't mind linking them to where it was discussed before. Sometimes new users don't know what terms to search for and therefore don't find it. Other times they could find it by searching, but so what. Long time users have the advantage of remembering a topic previously discussed. New users and less frequent visitors don't have that advantage, so let's share with them and help them. Perhaps this time around it will be answered or approached differently and benefit all. Again, don't like it, don't answer or comment, move on. I guess I don't see the big deal. We all gotta start somewhere. If we are going to take control of how and what is asked approach, then there goes the neighborhood. -
X7 Beta -I Spend More Time Waiting For Drawing Than Drawing
BenPalmer replied to AriseDesign's topic in General Q & A
Also experiencing slow: i notice it most when deleting items. -
Wanted to second the awesome Active Layers window always on...huge time saver. Loving it.
-
Sounds like the way to handle it. Thanks for trying that out and reporting back.
-
Thanks Justin. I mentioned that in one of my previous posts. I think that is the way to do it. But it goes to show that Chief can do it universally, but we don't have access to that functionality without tricking it. I'll probably give that a try if no other solutions present themselves.
-
I did try that, to no avail. Thanks again. Keep em coming.
-
Thanks Robert. Was hoping to do it within chief without hacking things. Makes future releases more clean to work with. But that also answers my question that there isn't a quick universal way to change the font 'within Chief'. Was just curious if there was. Thanks again for the out of the box thinking.
-
Thanks Robert. That works great for replacing the same font with the same name which i'm happy with as a quick fix. But what if I want to change to a completely different font with a different name? What is the fattest way to do that? Is there a universal way to go to one place and change all fonts to a new font? Or does each style need changed individually? Since Chief ships the software with it's font as the default, this process will have to be done each time an upgrade comes out. (hopefully it doesn't change back with each minor update). Or go to the 'save as' method as previously mentioned, and rely on those settings after changing out the font. Let me know if I'm overlooking something obvious.
-
OK, this has really been driving me crazy. I opened an X6 plan in X6 to take care of some City redlines, and all my electric blocks are messed up. So what I did was found the old font from another computer I hadn't upgraded to X7 yet, and installed that over the new one Chief installed, and that fixed everything beautifully. I copied the font to a folder to keep that font around in case updates re install it. With that said, what is the easiest way to universally change the font in current and future plans? Chief Blueprint is there by default, and would like to change this, but there are lots of places to change it. Wondering if deleting the font from the computer which I assume will prompt chief to ask for a replacement may be the fastest. Suggestions?
-
I really should go back to blueprintdbt. Need the consistency. It will be an easy fix too. Thanks.
-
I may do that. Thanks for the suggestion Adam. I use to use Dan Bauman's blueprintdpt, which I believe is what Chief's front was adapted from. I changed to Chief's thinking it would be easy, but these changes make it difficult to stay with there font. I need the consistency. I am assuming a change was made based on the migration guide pointed out by Kevin. I can't make any other assumption until Chief officially comments.
-
Seems like the solution would have been to rename the font for X7, and therefore legacy files would not be affected when installed into windows. Then we can either use the new font or the old font moving forward. Basically, the user would then have the choice if they want to update the font or not. Maybe it isn't too late to make this change? It could be changed for the final release, but those of us who installed the beta would need to manually make the change, which I would be ok with.
-
Thanks Kevin, appreciate you pointing that out. Did you read that guide, or was that something discovered in Beta? I guess I don't fully understand how a change in X6 is effecting X7? In addition, this change is effecting my X6 files as well. So it sounds like the change was made in X7 versus in X6? If there is no bug, I guess I'll just have to live with updating text, and being vigilante looking for surprise changes. Almost got burned on a file I had previously finished in X6, openened and printed in X6 and several text items are messed up. Seems like I shouldn't have to look for surprises when working in legacy, but this had to be a result of updating the universal windows font when installing x7. That should be spelled out better, if it was discovered at all. I guess my alternative is to get the old X6 font, and rename it, and have X6 files read to that renamed font, then I wouldn't have to deal with problems using X6.??
-
I noticed with the installation of X7, there are text items that have changed there alignment and cohesiveness. This appears to be a direct result with the Chief Blueprint Font only. In fact it is happening on X6 plans as well which leads me to believe that a new instance of that font was installed on Windows during the installation process, or it wouldn't effect X6 plans. Is that the case? And was there some kerning changes made to this font? It appears to be taking up slightly more space then in X6, resulting in text that was one line jumping into two lines. I can fix it with some time commitment, but I'd rather the font work the same as it did in X6. Curious if others are seeing this? Can Chief comment on if this font was edited? If so, why? If so, I may need to switch to another font if it is going to be edited each time to maintain consistency across upgrades. Thanks.

Awesome, thanks Brian!

The delay happens between clicking the print icon and the preview showing up. I'll do a quick count for printing a simple floor plan view: Click print icon: 4 seconds until I get the spinning circle, another 12 seconds staring at the spinning circle until print view shows up, and another 3 seconds until the preview actually shows for a total of 19 seconds until I can print to anything (pdf or printer). Then I click print on the preview and it's 4 seconds until I get the spinning circle, and another 4 seconds until it prints and I can use chief again. total time from click print until I can use chief again is 27 seconds. Sounds short when I think of seconds, but feels like an eternity when I'm putting togehter about 6 sheets at 30 seconds each totalling 3 minutes to put a print job together that should take 30 seconds total. I get this on my other computer as well. I have the latest video and print drivers. Computer specs: i7 3.5ghz 16 gb Ram 8.1 64bit GTX760 4gb ram Open to suggestions for things to try differently to speed this up. I have changed the printer with no change...not to mention it takes about 10 seconds to open the 'Drawing Sheet Setup' dbx. Thanks.

I have found printing in X7 very slow. Any others getting this? Suggestions? So far happening on multiple computers and multiple projects.

BenPalmer replied to PhxRemodel's topic in Seeking Services
I was going to ask what part of AZ you are in that you can do it without engineering and on small paper, but this explains it. Now that I'm thinking about it, what part of Arizona are you in? I'm in the Phoenix Area.- 7 replies

Try using chrome browser, and there is a beta option to cast the desktop. I have cast from chrome from my pc and it works great, but haven't tried the 'cast desktop' option yet, but could be the solution from a laptop. Let us know if it works. See link below for more direction. http://www.howtogeek.com/199565/mirror-anything-from-your-computer-to-your-tv-using-google-chromecast/
