  1. Never mind I just saw his unvented roof assembly with 2x4s and birdsmouth cut (75%?) spanning 40 or 50 ft with no color tie or rafter tie. With a single 2x10(?) carrying 50% of a load for entire roof.
  2. Design the floorplan using span tables. Here is simplified one <here> Use ACA rated subfloors, supply house will verify the spans. Choose 19.2" or 16" o.c. distance between floor joist. Select either dimensional lumber or ijoist. For dimensional lumber pick either 2x10 or 2x12. 2x10s are much cheaper, but will limit room sizes. Try using / sticking with the same floorjoists and spans. If you can use trusses or common trusses (way to go) - give your plan to truss manufacture. They will do the engineering and stamp the truss plan for you. >My big questions now are these roof questions w/ beams etc and we want a wall of windows like this: http://www.linwoodho...plans/everett2/ which probably has it's own structural challenges. These are two 2"x6"x16" o.c. window walls ( since they are over 10') framed with 8" between r/o, what structural issues?
  3. 1) Chief architect knows nothing about engineering. if you want your 250' ceiling held by 1"x1"s - 250' long have at it. You need to use strucalc or something similar to determine correct loads. 2) Framing: chief generates based on your wall definitions. Spanning 28' rafter (56') on the single side is insane : LVL, LAMs, MicroLams 3) "Also, same plan the ridge board seems pretty dinky But this is what you set it at. Garbage in - garbage out. Some of that depends not just on thickness of a material but also on species, grade such as M29.
  4. Most of the "tiny houses" are not legal in many jurisdictions. Less than code min. There is a creative way to declare them as a cabin or something else to bypass jurisdiction requirement. Studs sold at big box stores many times are not a construction grade ( Grade I, or Grade II ), but utility studs. Lumber supplies can beat big box stores, lumber sold 2' increments 10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24. Nine foot studs are available, so no reason to cut 10' Grades of common 2x10 or 2x12 not always known. (No way for building inspector to ok and verify spans of "SelectChoice" lumber) It needs to have stamp of species of lumber and the grade. I would also look for ACA rated OSB. Any structure is very efficient as long as it is built on 2' increments. Most of structures at 2' identically efficient. If you are trying to get interior wall to be exactly 12', exterior wall will be 12'-8", not so good for hardi sold in 12' length. Most subs [prices] do not care one bit IF structure is material efficient or not. The price is per sq ft. You are better of posting these questions on gardenweb build forum or chatroom. Good luck with your project.
  5. That was one of my suggestions to Chief Architect team <here>. I doubt anyone wants to search on one letter only, like "e". (egress) Chief expects you to be a fast typer and be able to enter few letters before search executes. Search time depends on number of catalogs and user items you have. If you install every possible catalog it will take some time to search. Letter "e" has known frequency of "12" (over 50%)
  6. >Now, the only thing that I wish Chief did have that Archicad really blows it out of the water with - is the ability to snap to objects in all views, elevation, cross sections etc. it's amazing how you just hover your mouse over an object like a wall or door or window and the object and its various components glow +1 on Visual Feedback >Dimensioning is amazing as well. Archicad dimensioning is very similar to Chief. ArchieCad you select dimension line hold control key and click points to add (much faster), Chief - use diamonds, drag diamond to a point or center line that you want dimensioned. Everything else in dimensions looks similar. I do like opportunity to edit value and supply fake [adjusted] dimension value. I think favorites, with predefined items including text's with arrow and text[notes] organized per floor is a great ArchieCAd strength. You derived your basement, quickly place all predefined items texts with arrows from your basement favorites and you could be done under 2 minutes vs Chief User Items are pretty slow process of placing Notes. Notes schedulers are very needed and missing.
  7. Two cams facing each other Identical settings Defaults Produced results: E19 is odd, no ref markers dimensions on all side, appears to ignore the defaults. Now E21 I deleted and reproduced 100% of the time.... Not 100% sure why? I expected similar results as both set to back clip @16"
  8. joey_martin - Thank you. I understood. I was trying to create a new symbol. Take switch, update 3d geometry with a dot, update 2d with an arrow. On 3d model i would get unable to find a face
  9. What about 3D look? Other issue I had with it wanting to attach to walls... Never mind, you said it is just a line with an arrow, not a switch Alaskan_Son suggested.
  10. I asked exactly same question. before. Electrical wires would not attach to the note, another switch would not switch to 3 way.... > I don't see why a person couldn't just create a custom electrical symbol and just replace the CAD block with an arrow. I tried and failed. It would be nice reusable component. It is a shame that CA does not include "electrical" arrow. I made skp arrow, replaced 3d was wrong. @joey_martin ... I have seen your PDF layouts and they are phenomenal. Would you mind sharing what is that? Is that a electrical symbol?
  11. Delete the file... Here I made one for you Chief Architect Premier X8.zip
  12. Is that about time for x9?
  13. >where can i change this text style? I assume you are talking about font and size. Text is based on layer and each layer can have own text style. (Ignoring RichText) Thus first define new layer e.g. "Text CAD, bearings" and then define new appropriate text style e.g. "Text, CAD, bearings Style" .
  14. That's right I forgot, chief does have 2 super. Perimeter is "14,11 m" two digits after decimal point. Note the space.
  15. I live now in US, but when I did my engineering drafting in college to denote 12'-0" x 11'- 0" area in the metric system "3,60 x 3,30". No need to indicate "m". Archaic dm never used, cm - very rarely used (commonly by individuals but not in a engineering and architecture papers). For parts measurements look like: 48mm x 26mm and not (4,8cm x 2,6cm). Room sizes 10,3 m2 almost never two digits (this could depend on country ). As you know from my previous post chief architect can not do m2, and at least my school professors would never accept m2 or sq m. My guess not chief target market.
  16. Upgrade to X8 is $695. It may be well worth it. You obviously know they are offering a free trial of x8, you could quickly download and see for yourself that it works correctly.
  17. Nick I had to rebuild west basement wall in RedrawWithCorrectDefaultsGlitch.plan, but all it was deleted the wall and diamond connected. With the rest I see no issues and I do not have x7 so can not help you
  18. Would be nice to have a SYMBOL (like an arrow) that can be wired and act as a switch. This is what I was looking for...
  19. On the systems plan, I would like to show that the lights are also controlled by the switch from downstairs. Draw the arrow with text right and attach the wires? Well wiring will not attach to a CAD object, and if I fake the wiring - I can not get to to display 3 way switch? ---- Any guidance?
  20. This looks like capsule callout that has "rotate with the plan" checked?
  21. I do not think it is a bug, exterior symbols are by default "attached" to a terrain with exception if they are inside of a room (such as porch, deck).
  22. I posted exact source code for the class. It does not do metric unlike Joe's. Other than that it works 100%
  23. @BrownTiger - thanks for your time in doing this. I am not quite sure how you did it without impacting the roof lines of the existing house/structure. You did well. I discovered reference point on the terrain -36" on the terrain [should have created terrain hole], place a slab, convert into foundation, placed a walls aligned walls with the foundation, fixed walls to align with foundation, roofed it with the custom planes. I like to build models of crazy houses from Houzz, garage is not a issue.
