Does anyone know a trick to convert text to a solid?
JKEdmo replied to rikdekker's topic in General Q & A
This might help: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00709/creating-a-sign-with-3d-lettering.html Also, if you have access to Autocad, it's possible to explode text into a polyline using Express Tools which you can then extrude if I recall correctly. You could import this into Chief I imagine. -
Good morning, Can anybody confirm if concentric resize works on stair plans? I drag a stair width handle while holding down "c" and the opposite side does not resize as I'd expect. I could be doing it wrong, but if this does not in fact work I can post it to the suggestion list for improvements. Thanks, Jim

Henry, U-shaped flashing at the top of siding sounds wrong, but a little hard to tell from the photos. In any case, James Hardie website has details available showing proper installation which should give you direction:

I recommend contacting tech support. You've paid for the service. They are usually very responsive. Jim

Mark, Thanks for helping me with this. I'll give it a try. Jim

How can I mull this window? Top unit in stack crosses floors.
JKEdmo replied to GeneDavis's topic in General Q & A
I think the trick is to balloon frame that end gable wall. -
Yes, CAT 5 just refers to the type of Ethernet cable, Category 5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable
-
Try searching for "Cat5"

Good morning, Is it possible to do a double bifold cabinet door? I'm doing a recessed full-height cabinet as a laundry center. I'd like the doors to be bifold. This laundry cabinet is to match the adjacent full-height storage cabs. Thanks again, Jim

Door and window labels not to be shown on all section views

I think it's pretty new -- maybe 2 versions old? -

Thanks. It's the Depth Cue tool. Works really well. You should check it out. -
Door and window labels not to be shown on all section views

Just to follow up, looks like label position can vary by view. I dragged the labels out of the way in the grey background elevation below. In the second view, they show up where they were automatically placed. But, Robert's solution is "cleaner." -

I don't know re. your first question. That's probably a downside. I'd have to go back and check. Not working today - just rode the bike! Jim -
Door and window labels not to be shown on all section views
JKEdmo replied to mtldesigns's topic in General Q & A
I had this come up the other day. I had an exterior elevation where I wanted to show window tags in the foreground but those in the grey out background beyond I did not want to show. I just grabbed those tags and moved them up out of the way so they did not show in the layout box. Jim -
Doug, Pretty sure DBC is right. You have invisible railing walls up against the house. These are interfering with the window and door openings. Jim

Thanks again for your insight.

Thanks for confirming. That's pretty wild, but good to know. One thing still confuses me is why didn't Undo correct this? Are changes to default settings not affected by undo? Jim P.S. Once again the forum proves to be a great resource.

Hello, I was working on a sloped terrain this morning in perspective full overview. I went to adjust a retaining wall height and apparently grabbed the wrong handle of something, causing my entire first floor building height to reduce by 2 feet throughout. This really tweaked the model. I tried to undo / undo / undo several times but with the no effect. And that's when the "panic" started setting in... Anyways, what I figured out was the handle adjustment had somehow changed my 1st floor / floor level / ceiling height in Default Settings. I was able to correct the value and everything returned back to normal. I wouldn't have thought a handle grab in 3D view could cause such an overall change to a default setting. I'm wondering for my own education what I grabbed could have caused this? (Like an exterior room, or?). Thanks again, Jim

Liz, Search for "custom muntins" under help. This tool allows you to define window muntins how you want. Jim

Agreed! I'm gonna try it out tomorrow. Jim

I took a stab at this and made some progress. My attached test PLAN (X17) is simpler example, but should apply to your condition. I drew CAD helper lines in elevation to be able to get exact measurements for the heights, radius, etc. I think the key is selecting the "double arch" type for the shallow arc shape of the arch. Right or Left Arch for the side units and Full Arch for the middle unit. Mulling the units together did not work perfectly, but you might have better luck. Good luck! Christopher - It's already there. It's just hiding off to the side. Jim

I've done projects where voice/data is by others. I think your approach of delegating to the homeowner is okay. Cable and copper lines are not entirely obsolete. Cable is still very common for internet service. As for phone lines, I can still get DSL in my building if I wanted. I have an elderly neighbor who has problems working his smart phone and he probably should get a phone line hooked up just for his own safety. I imagine once you run cable and phone to the home, it's not that much more cost to run it to a few rooms. As for ethernet, a lot of home owners like data wiring just for its reliability. No wifi connection issues. Jim

My first thought is do it all as mulled window units. For the lower "units" with the recessed panels, you could adjust the window frame widths and turn off the sashes. Change the glazing material to solid white. Mull everything together.

This technique gets the plan display I like for high transom or clerestory windows - dashed window outline for windows above with solid wall at normal plan section level. Probably old news to some of you, but I thought I'd share. Place your windows Put these high windows on a new dedicated layer (e.g. Windows, Dashed) with dashed linetype. Here's the trick -- make the host wall have a pony wall with the pony wall top height below the sill height of the high windows. Turn on "Lower Wall" for "Display in Plan View." This will get you solid (non-broken) wall display for the wall with the windows showing dashed above.
