Separation lines in exterior walls with different interior finish
JKEdmo replied to mprovost129's topic in General Q & A
Related question -- Anybody know why duplicate materials show up? I don't really create extra materials -- at least knowingly -- but they seem to appear on their own. Concrete for example. Thanks, Jim- 15 replies

Thanks for insight. I guess good practice to merger materials. Jim- 15 replies

Rob, Do you know if duplicate materials in plan also create the issue? Jim- 15 replies

Construction Lines w/ Dimensions - Display All Floors

Thank you Steve for taking time out to look at this. I'll have to study this further in the morning. Jim -
Construction Lines w/ Dimensions - Display All Floors
JKEdmo replied to JKEdmo's topic in General Q & A
Steve, I tried what you suggested, but display of dimensions still is affected by floor level. (I think I understand the concept -- draw everything I need for gridlines and their associated dimensions and then bring it into other floors as a Reference Display?) BASSETT 2 - PROPOSED.zip -
Using construction lines for first time in Chief and liking them. I have them set to display on all floors. So far so good. But, I'd like to dimension them. I don't suppose there is a setting that allows dimensions to display on all floors also? Thanks, Jim

Does not seem so. Can you just use some text on the one page?

Clever Chiefers! Hog panel: how to do in both 2D and 3D

Gene, I've attached the PLAN file for you to look at. It was a panel item from the library. JimHOG RAIL.plan -
Clever Chiefers! Hog panel: how to do in both 2D and 3D
JKEdmo replied to GeneDavis's topic in General Q & A
Gene, Like this? The panel type is called "Cross Hatch." I found it under fences and railings / ironwork in the Core Architectural catalog. Oink! -
Thanks Michael for looking into this. Jim

Good morning, I've got floating dormers on my roof. It appears with the roof hole, roof planes and walls showing. Is there a way to get the plan representation to look graphically proper in plan without having to explode the dormer or add filled CAD linework over it? Thanks again, Jim

I watched the X16 presentation yesterday and was pleased that Chief brought some improvements to this tool. Looking forward to trying it out. Jim

Gene, Just curious -- have you ever had issues or needed to clarify with your door / window mfgs Chief's default sizing convention (e.g. 2670) or is it pretty clear to them what's meant? The reason I ask is in my "ideal world" the inches would be underscored (e.g. 2670) but Chief does not do this out of the box. Thanks, Jim

How to calculate square footage?
JKEdmo replied to heidistokoe's topic in Building Codes and Compliance
Thanks for posting. Great reference! Jim -
That was the problem I was running into. Doug's solution is working pretty well. Although I'm getting double window shutters! That said, I'd like to try Michael's suggestion to see if that works too. I could see showing the air gap as a Cad block. On deadline right now -- I'll circle back to this. Once again, thanks for all help! Jim

Hello, I'm trying to get two window openings to form at a deep double wall. In red below: I previously defined the fat furred out wall that the windows sit in as one wall definition. However, that created a wall cleanup issue as the wall turned the corner plan right near the 1'-0" dimension. Soooo, I thought I'd be clever and try two separate walls, but cannot seem to get the double wall opening to work. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks once again, Jim

Basic slab door with upper window?
JKEdmo replied to Christina_Girerd's topic in Symbols and Content
Christina, You can use the basic glass panel door type: Just modify the Bottom Panel frame Width to suit: Jim -
Why does shading disappear when I print a floor plan?
JKEdmo replied to westvale's topic in General Q & A
There is a setting in the Appearance Panel that forces gray scale items to either black or white. Go to Preferences / Appearance Panel / Display and switch on Grayscale as oppposed to Black and White. Read up on the help description for item #4. That's my best guess. -
How can I create a reeded glass partition with black frame?
JKEdmo replied to westvale's topic in General Q & A
I took another approach with an interior wall hosting a modified window. I created a skinny wall type with Insulation Air Gap as the sole material: This wall then hosts a full-height fixed window with settings to tweaked to mimic a glass panel. (I turned off casings, sill, sash, etc. and adjusted the frame width). Materials adjusted as required. Jim -
Lane, Funny, but I was dealing with this very same issue earlier today for a breezeway. I believe the answer is no. To my knowledge there are 2 two methods to control spacing: 1) Turn off railing columns / balusters and place the posts separately / manually. 2) Break the railings into separate lengths (break the rails and then flip the rail so it does not auto-heal back together). You can then control the post interval spacing for each defined length. Here's the breezeway I was working on today. I broke the initial 4 railing runs into more segments to better control the spacing (A, B , etc.) and to make the spacing match on both sides. Jim

Good morning, I'm doing some project housekeeping and noticed I have wall type "Siding 6" and wall type "Siding 6 - NEW." Both are identical. Is there an easy way to consolidate or "merge" these two wall types into one type besides going through each wall on by one? Thanks again, Jim

Thanks Robert -- that worked really well. Jim
