  1. I've mulled  fixed window and an awning window in an ICF wall.  The mull wants to be the depth of the wall.  I've tried to change the mullion depth in the DBX but it doesn't seem to do anything.  Is there a way to adjust this mull to a normal depth?

  2. A customer wants a custom stove exhaust cover.  I'm close by using a cabinet with peninsula radius.  The problem is that i need a smaller radius on the corners (probably 6-12") to allow enough room for the actual exhaust fan.  I can't find a way to decrease the radius.  Is there another method that would be better to create this in CA?

Shift select the upper stair portion, go to Railing Tab and uncheck Railing On Left. Keep in mind that the handrail on the left side will still have its upper termination in the same location (where the hand rail and railing meet). For a proper handrail, you would need to add another 3d molding!

Robert, thanks for this input also.  I'm seeing where the 3D molding is useful when you don't want the default CA solution.

The main issue here is that the Open Below room and the Bonus Room don't have the same floor and ceiling elevations. The Open Below room is using the default elevations for the 2nd floor while the Bonus Room and Mech Rm are using customized floor and ceiling elevations.

The mistake here is not setting the default elevations for the 2nd floor to match what you want (i.e. the Bonus Room elevations). Fortunately, it's never too late to fix this!

Make a note of your desired floor and ceiling elevations and adjust the defaults for the 2nd floor. Don't forget to also adjust the floor structure default for the 2nd floor.

Go to  Default Settings> Floors and Rooms> Floor Levels> 2nd Floor and set these values to be the same as the Bonus Room.

This will update any room on the 2nd floor that is using the default values! After that, make sure the Bonus Rm and Mech Rm are set to use the default value as well.

Lastly, make sure the Open Below room has "Flat Ceiling" checked.

By the way, you have rooms on the main floor that don't have the correct ceiling height! You'll need to thoroughly inspect these to make sure everything is built correctly. From what I can tell, all main floor rooms should have the default floor and ceiling elevations.

Robert,  thanks for taking the time to not just give me a solution, but to explain what's going on.  I fixed the upstairs.  Now I'm going to re-read it so I understand, then fix the downstairs.

I took a snow day yesterday.  We got over 2 inches and lots of things were closed.  It was also MLK day, my wife was off for the holiday.

    Thanks again!

Maybe a molding polyline?  You may also be able to just set a handrail for the lower stair section and none on the upper one when you add the complete break for #3.  FYI, if you want to change the settings for one stair section and not another, all you need to do is shift-select it and open the stair dialog.

@DBCooper I haven't used 3d molding polylines much but I know they are useful.  Thanks for the tip.  It worked great!

Yes, I see that I could have been clearer about that!

No problem.  Using your suggestions, I've got it about 90% the way it needs to be.  I've attached how it currently looks and an updated .pln file.  Here are two more questions:

    1.  How do I get rid of the left wall rail on the upper portion of stairs and keep the lower left (open) railing?

    2.  Somehow, my room divider at the top of the stairs is messing up my 2nd floor ceiling.  What am I doing wrong here?

Have you made a complete break to the stairs? The upper portion of the stairs has to fit between the walls.

I did make the break but I didn't adjust the top portion.  I though your input was a different idea than @DBCooper.  Now I understand that it is in addition to.  I will work with this and see what I can do.  Thanks...I'll let you know how it turns out.

This wall transition can be adjusted in section view, however Chief will not build the railing to match the walls, rather the railing will still match the stairs.

@robdyck I made the Open Below room on the 2nd floor as you suggested.  I put a break in the first floor wall under the stair so I could adjust it in section view as you suggested.  I can't seem to pull that portion of the wall up to meet the ceiling above.  I've tried a few other things to make it work with no success.  Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

  9. I've been using CA for several years and still have problems with some stair issues.  I've included a couple of pictures and the .pln file.  Issues are:

    1. How to show sheetrock on the bottom of an attic wall (part of dormer)?

    2. How to show sheetrock above the stair rail?

    3. How to move a portion of the stair in when a staircase transitions from open rail to enclosed?

    4. How to show a custom hand rail on a wall that does not match the total run of the stairs?

    Thanks in advance.

  10. @solver thanks for taking time to make the video tutorial.  There are several things I saw that I can use frequently; the ceiling heigh to "1000" and using the stair angle for ceiling planes and light angles.  This will help with fixing some of my problems.  I did "undefault" some items and I need to get a better grasp on how to do things the right way.  I never stop learning this program.  Thanks and have a great weekend.

  11. @robdyck I'd like to keep the electrical symbols on the first floor since that's where the switches are.  I see what you are talking about though.

@DBCooper they are all marked correctly.  They are finding the 9' ceiling in the kitchen area for some reason.  They Liv/Din sloped clg plane is drawn on the first floor.  I'll keep experimenting.

Thank you both for your input.

Open the ceiling plane, uncheck "Use Room Ceiling Finish"

@robdyck, I think I've used the stair option before...just been a while.  The ceiling plane is a new one for me.  Thanks so much.  Easy fixes...just got to know where to find them.

One more quick question.  I did the electrical plan but the living room can lights are resting on the 12' (which for the living and dining is "not flat above") ceiling plane instead of the sloped ceiling.  Is there an easy way to get the can lights against the sloped ceiling plane?

  13. I've not had much trouble with ceilings above stairs in the past but this one is giving me fits.  I hope someone can explain what I'm doing wrong.  I've got a sloped ceiling plane above the living and dining area.  There's a balcony (landing) that hangs over part of the living roo0m and a closet under part of the balcony.  So, as the camera shows, I can't get the sloped ceiling plane to cover the stairs.  There's a room divider between living and dining that I think is causing some of the problem.  I'm attaching the .pln file if someone wants to take a look at it.

On a side note, how can I make the bottom stair portion open underneath and the top stair portion closed risers?

^^ exactly this - avoid yankin your walls around in camera views and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches. Generally speaking, the program knows how to do walls better than we do.

I'm learning that...the hard way.  I just still don't know all the ins and outs of adjusting things the right way.  You all have been helpful though.

If you only reset the "wall top heights" and "wall bottom heights" it won't change any of your floor or ceiling heights.  Basically, it will only reset your walls back to default heights when you have manually moved the wall top/bottom up/down (which is something you usually don't need to do to change your ceiling heights).

    That's good to know.  Thanks!

@robdyck it seems that many of my issues are easy fixes.  I've set up a new construction template but it always seems like I mess it up somehow.  Just like the kitchen floor - I've tried to go room by room and set the defaults but I obviously missed that.  I keep a running list of update items but I never seem to get it all done.  I don't know about your area, but this type of house is really popular around here these days.  I'm glad you like it...nice PBR.

@TeaTime I'll keep your method in mind when I need a more drastic reset.  This plan has 9', 10' and open ceilings so I didn't want to reset the whole floor.

Anyway, thanks for both of your input.  I'll be keeping these items in mind when this happens again...which I'm sure it will!  Have a great weekend.

Siding always covers floor framing for whatever floor or floors you view in an elevation.  If you are getting some double line at your ceiling / floor junctures, you are doing something wrong.

I opened a new plan, did walls for a two floor box house with board and batten siding, clicked to get auto storypole, and look what I got.

    Screenshot 2023-08-24 110931.png

I guess I need to go back and check some things.  My overlap is 1 1/4" which is the thickness of my 2nd floor subfloor.  I added the subfloor after I created the elevation section view.  Do you think this would create the double line?

  18. Customer wants a wardrobe cabinet shown in a bedroom (to be custom built) - doors on outside with drawers, shelves, and shelf and rod on the inside.  I've tried the wall cabinet and modified shelves, but I can only get them to be all roll out or none.  I'd like to have three drawers with shelves or shelf and rod above - behind the exterior doors.  Is there a way to do this within the cabinet DBX?
