I am on a good streak now so hopefully whatever changed, whether it was me messing around with settings on my end and/or if Dan and the ID crew did something good, I don't know ... BUT I AM HAPPY TO HAVE ACCESS TO CHIEFTALK on a daily basis again. Thanks to everyone who's provided suggestions and assistance. Much appreciated. PS: Just in the process of completed some maintenance on my old computer so I will have to check out and see how my access to ChiefTalk works on it.

Just guessing but I think you forgot to install your sill plates. Is the gap 1.5" thick?
-
Tim: Your file is invisible.

Randy: That is the link I have had bookmarked since the new forum started. If you read some of my previous posts, you will see that I have included that link and two others (accounts.xxx and login.xxx) as exceptions in my FireFox and CCleaner setups. Seems to be working now - maybe I am good to go. I still need to log in every time I use CCleaner though, then, as Perry indicated, I am able to get on ChiefTalk via the "forums" link.

Adding Additional Insulation Layer(S) To Roof Assembly
CJSpud replied to Boxon1's topic in General Q & A
Boxon: I did a search for "multiple roof layers" and one of the threads was a totally different subject ("roof battens") but maybe it will give you some ideas: https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?/topic/207-roof-and-ceiling-battens-please/page-2?hl=%20multiple%20%20roof%20%20layers You want to mostly read the posts by Glenn but actually it is worth reading all the posts so you know what other ideas were kicked around. Or you can wait for Mr. Glenn or one of our other Chief Experts to give you a good suggestion on what you can try. Good luck. -
Adding Additional Insulation Layer(S) To Roof Assembly
CJSpud replied to Boxon1's topic in General Q & A
Boxon: You could go to the Options > Roof Layers and increase the thickness of the sheathing layer e.g. and then just detail that properly in your CAD details (sections) with PL's with fill. Another thing you could try, and I have never done this, is to make a copy of your roof and then edit it such that only one layer for insulation is left. Move it back over your roof and make sure the elevation of this extra roof is set right. This might be a bad idea but I thought I would throw it out anyway. Maybe someone else will come up with a much better/easier approach to this. It would really be nice if we could layer roofs like we do walls. You should stick that in the Suggestion forum. -
I think Taylor at Tech Support just helped me to resolve my issue (edit: he did). What was happening to me when checking each of those baths to make sure I had room definition was that the exterior room was being selected (which basically showed as a big gray multi-cornered box in the shape of the plan) instead of just the bath. If I hit tab, I would get the baths to highlight as I would expect to get on the first selection click. Taylor suggested that I check my exterior walls for a bad connection so I did. The plan includes a couple of 45° wall segments of which I cleaned up the appearance of with the new wall layers corner connection tool. Even though I was getting room definition for the first angled wall I checked, the connection was still a little funky as evidenced by a bit of white showing with one of the layers. I used that new tool to see if I couldn't get rid of that white area (my layer fill was "filled in") and was able to. I then tried clicking in the plan and now I can get all rooms to highlight the first click. I then checked the centering tool for those two baths and now it works. Somehow that funky exterior wall connection was affecting the way the centering tool worked. I am happy now .... THANKS Taylor.

Here's an image of the situation I am talking about. For both the half-bath (right) and the toilet room (left), both rooms are closed with room definition. If I select the toilet in either room, and then select the wall to center the toilet on, I get a fuzzy dashed heavy line down the middle of the wall instead of a vertical line like I attempted to show in red, which is the way the centering tool has always worked for me in previous versions. I would like that functionality back and I can't think of any reason why they would have changed that. I am really liking the ease of posting images on the new forum. Seems much better (quicker) compared to the old method.
-
Perry: That is probably what I will do as well. Hopefully my problems are behind me ... time will tell.
-
I have tried unsuccessfully to use the centering tool to center a toilet on a half bath wall. Is the tool broke. All that shows up when I attempt to use it is a sort of dashed line that overlays the wall I want the toilet to be perpendicular to. That is the way the center tool lines used to show up as ... now they don't. Is anyone else having this problem? This is the only thread I could find in doing a search on this tool.

Dan: I finally just got done working in Chief so with all programs closed, I ran CCleaner on both tabs and did a registry clean. When trying to get on ChiefTalk via the "forums" route, I couldn't. I had to log in first and then I could get on ChiefTalk. One thing I wish we had was a direct link to ChiefTalk from the log in page ... seems like there was one there not too long ago but now it is gone. Is it possible to get a ChiefTalk link on the log in page? Not sure if I proved anything but maybe with the things I did with CCleaner and the exceptions, maybe that will make a difference. By the way, I now have cookies unchecked when I run CCleaner. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions. I will just have to see how long this stretch goes for me.

Dan: I really appreciate your taking the time to try and help me sort this out. Right now I am on a stretch of 3 days where I can get on ChiefTalk so for now, that is good. Kbird has been giving me some ideas and one of the last things I did is to visit my exceptions for CCleaner. I had an exception for the old ChiefTalk address but not for the new forum. I added the three sites you had told me to add awhile back and then I ran CCleaner to see if I could get on right away ... and I was able to. But just out of curiosity, I am going to run CCleaner after I post this and then try to get on again. Regarding my FF network proxy setting, the two images below are how the network is presently configured: If I am successful in getting back on ChiefTalk, I will post again to that effect. Thanks for your help.
-
Kbird: I have tried IE and it is like FF ... sometimes it will work and lately, most of the time (like FF), it doesn't. I don't have Chrome and no room for it either. I think I am going to have to flush out some stuff on the SSD drive as I have been getting disk error messages in a plan I am working on. I usually like to leave a nice cushion of extra space on a drive but with a couple of updates I have done recently, I have about pegged my capacity. Am going to see if I can't move some stuff over to my data drive, such as Sketchup, Open Office, etc. That will really help if I can since the larger SSD I ordered won't be here for several days. I know that the 's' in https had something to do with better security. Randy: I double checked my CCleaner settings and only had the old Chieftalk exception listed so I added the 3 for the new forum [i.e.: https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/, https://accounts-rp2.chiefarchitect.com, https://login.chiefarchitect.com]. Plus I have unchecked Cookies for FF. I am tempted to go run CC and see what happens but think I will pass for now. I want to see if I can get on the forum in the morning. The last time I was good for two or three days or so before I got the boot.

Rob: Thanks for the great suggestion. I tried getting onto ChiefTalk on another older desktop and couldn't. Not sure what, if anything, that means. Saturday my woes continued until late in the day when I gained access to the home page but when I attempted to login, I lost it. I ended up having to reset my password as I apparently typed in the wrong one. Chief sent me a temporary password and in that email was a login link which is what I used to get on the forum. I had been using an http://... login link on occasion previously and noticed the new link is https:.//.... Time will tell to see whether or not that helps. I usually try to get on ChiefTalk with a bookmarked link "https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/" - that has worked in the past, at least when I am in the groove and can get on. I am suspect of Firefox as it updated Saturday a.m. when I booted my computer. Still looking for the magical cure to all this ... I am beginning to think it may never happen and my ChiefTalk use may just continue on a random, who knows when I can get on schedule.

The reason I did this post was because I was having a bad hair day understanding the landing size requirements under the 2012 IRC. An inspector from Clarkston, WA inadvertently hit my light switch and now I think I got it. The code writers different applications for the word "width" for some reason was giving me trouble. I guess I need to give the code writers a little slack ... the answer was there ... I just couldn't see it. Thanks for the replies.

Jim: I agree. My question is related to a project I am working on that includes a large turret that will have a circular stairway between the main and 2nd story. The height between floors is 16' 1-3/4" thus a landing is required. Landings for residential stairways are governed by R311.7.6. What I am questioning is the reason for the landing size change in the 2012 IRC vs. the previous version. This new change is forcing me into making a larger diameter turret so I can get the stairs to land in the proper location at the 2nd story elevation.
-
For all you building code experts in ChiefTalk land, below is an image I recently captured, that shows a very nice circular staircase. I "think" the picture was taken in Washington D.C., perhaps the Capital building but I have never been there so am only guessing on the location. My question is: If this stairs was built in a residential home, would it meet the IRC 2012 code requirements? The pertinent code section is IRC 2012 R311.7 Stairways. I haven't looked at the IBC so I don't know what differences there is between the two codes. If that stairs was located in the ICC building, it would have been more interesting. Thanks.

K.... I will try that the next time I run crap cleaner. Thanks.

Tommy: Did you get delayed in finishing your editing or was your editing completed quickly and then it didn't take? If you were delayed in completing your editing, maybe you got "timed out" ....??

Why Do I Keep Being Asked To Post A Picture Of My Issue?
CJSpud replied to Gawdzira's topic in General Q & A
I agree. According to the common core of logic, 1 + 2 can = anything as long as you have a good reason for your answer, regardless of how good it looks. Please post a picture of your problem and maybe Scott will do a video for you!!! Is that you on the left or right in your gravatar? PS: I am the one in the middle of mine. 3 days in a row on ChiefTalk .... whoopeee!! -
My experience with putting books on shelves is that you need to use two different views .... and possibly even three depending on what you are dealing with. Start with an front view to get the elevation and side to side position correct. Then a top or side view for getting the front to back position right. If you have multiple stacked shelves, all with books on them, then you have to go back and forth between views. Using the backclipped camera can help if needed.

David: I called TS the last go around and nothing changed .... the strategy was to check with Mozilla and hopefully get a fix from them. I was told to turn off hardware acceleration for one and the last correspondence was a whole list of anti-spyware and anti-malware (etc.) links I was suppose to run to cleanup any bad stuff encountered. I already have malwarebytes on my machine so ran that ... downloaded superantispyware but couldn't get it to run (???) and gave up ... my C: drive is full so until I deal with that issue, I won't be installing any of those sorts of programs on my computer. Seems like I can access the forum once again (last night and today ... whoopee) ... hope it holds this time. Dan: Thanks for whatever you have done - maybe it will help me. For your information, I had been able to get on the new forum several days in a row last week and I thought everything was going to be OK. Then I ran CCleaner and that seemed to trigger my issues again, even though I have those three exceptions for the forum entered. It is like something in Mozilla and/or Chief is/was still preventing me from getting on the forum (some cookie didn't get installed or ???) ... something was missing and I could watch the accounts/login etc. just going through a never ending loup before I would get the error message. Then, however the magic works, once I am able to get on the forum, then it seems to work better. Hopefully, whatever you have done will solve my issue. Ron: Yes, I did whatever was required when the new forum began. I have off and on successfully used the new forum just fine ... it is obviously the "off times" that are driving me nutty. Maybe there's one other little nugget of something I have missed that is responsible for all my grief ???? If there is one, I sure wish I could put a handle on it. Last night before I shut my computer down, I got off ChiefTalk and then got back on two more times with Firefox and once with IE so maybe I am good to go for awhile.

Took all day for me to access ChiefTalk via the new chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com site. Tried early this a.m. and multiple times throughout the day and right before dinner and no luck. Now I am about ready to head to bed and thought I would try one more time and to my surprise, I was able to get on the forum. I sure wish I knew what was going on. This is the only website I have problems accessing - go figure. And I have had this problem off and on since the switch. I can very quickly get onto the old legacy ChiefTalk without a hiccup ... but this new safe, secure, whatever site to me is a PITA. Maybe Chief will give me a discount on my SSA next time around since I don't seem to have much success accessing all the advertised features. Would like to stay on and see what's new but nada ... I am heading for the sack. SURE WISH SOMEONE AT HEADQUARTERS WOULD FIGURE OUT WHY I AM HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE!!!! What changed to cause me so much grief ... SOMETHING CHANGED ... please, for the last time, FIX IT or give me a clue - a different one that might work. Mozilla wants me to download a gob of different programs to scan for who knows what ... I don't have space to do that so it aint going to happen. Hughes says everything is working find but I can pay for support from some service that deals with 3rd party applications ... that aint going to happen either. Did that one time and they soaked me over a hundred bucks for diddily. Not a happy camper. I guess as long as the rest of the flock is not having trouble, I am expendable.

Thanks Jonathan ... I ran into that issue recently as well and I think I did some manual editing ... sounds like I didn't have to. I will check that out.

Allan, Scott: Thanks for sharing those images. Great Job!!! I want to grow up some day too.
