Maintaining Existing Roof when Building New Roof

Hello,

On the Build Roof Dialog you have the option for either Retain Manually Drawn Roof Planes or Retain Edited Automatic Roof Planes.

The first option (Retain Manually Drawn Roof Planes) will affect any roof planes that were drawn manually by using the Roof Plane tool. This tool can be found by going to Build> Roof> Roof Plane. You can tell if a roof plane was manually drawn because it will show “Manual Roof Plane”, like it shows in your screenshot.

The second option (Retain Edited Automatic Roof Planes) will affect any roof planes that were generated by the Auto Rebuild Roofs or the Build Roof Planes option, and then were manually adjusted or marked as edited. A roof plane will automatically have the “Mark as Edited” checkbox enabled if you made changes to the roof plane after it was generated. (ie. Changing its’ pitch, reshaping, repositioning, etc.).

You can certainly have a mix of these roof planes in your file. You can have the ones that were automatically generated by the Build Roof tool, but you could also have some that you manually drew in using the Roof Planes tool. Based off of your screenshot I'm thinking you might have group selected your roof planes. I would instead go one by one and take note of "Mark as Edited" or "Manual Roof Plane".

I hope this helps!

Thanks ChiefTylerL - I have tried to select my roofs individually as well & that checkbox still does not show up. I did not create the roofs in the original file, but assume there's nothing unique about them - they had to be created either manually or automatically. If a roof is automatically built but not ever edited does it mean that roof option will not be available? Not sure how to any new roofs w/o affecting the others unless I fully detach my garage from the house to do so.

Adding more visuals in this order:

-existing home w/ existing roofs

-proposed garage/mudroom addition before attempting roofs (so just walls)

-DBX screen when attempting to build new roofs over addition

-roof spaghetti that ensues

-floorplan if helpful per SHCanada2

I know the existing house has manually drawn roofs. If I select all or just one of them the DBX still does not provide the option to "mark as edited". I just don't know where that is hiding?

If I proceed to "Building Roof" tool & check off "Retain Manually Drawn Roof Planes" box in the DBX, I get new roofs built overtop the existing roofs & it tried to combine these with new roofs over the addition. Technically the existing roofs aren't getting changed, but overbuilt, but still...why would they get involved at all?

I clearly still have a lot to learn about roofs, but why wouldn't that "mark as edited" option appear anywhere in my DBX's?

Did you draw/edit the roof that's on the existing house? Once I get to manual roof planes or edited automatic planes (i.e. no longer auto roofs), I don't try to have anything new auto-built. In other words, why wouldn't you just create new manual roof planes for the garage? That would've been a lot faster than the time you've spent trying to get the program to build them.

looking a little closer at the screenshots, it looks like CA is making roofs in addition to the manually drawn roofs? This, I think, is expected behaviour as I have this happen all the time and then I delete the auto generated roofs (and turn off the auto build roofs). it is a bit of a PIA if you add some more building and want that portion of the building to auto build. As you have to go build the roofs, and delete the other roofs auto done on the rest of the building. rinse repeat everytime you change the building addition

I also see the new roof overbuild the existing roofs and have to delete the new roofs; I think it's been that way forever.
