3d Detail Files For Sale:

For anybody interested, I'm making my 3d detail files available for purchase for your own use / modification for your plans.

My detail plan files contain multiple 'vignettes' of construction per plan which is far more efficient than a stand-alone model. These multiples allow for extremely simple and quick replication within the plan file for detailing construction methods that are similar, but have different components. The cameras can be replicated along with the model components allowing for matching image generation.

If you were to start from scratch, you'd have to allow at least 200 hours to create what's contained in my plan files.

Here's what you'd get from me:
  1. Cad file template for annotating the details to fit evenly on a layout page (you may need to adjust the size to suit your page)
  2. 9 Chief Architect plan files based on various construction 'themes' containing about 150 detail vignettes.
    1. Windows - Interior
    2. Windows - Exterior
    3. ICF construction
    4. SIP construction
    5. I-Joist construction
    6. Floor Truss Construction
    7. Concrete Foundation Construction
    8. Various Construction
    9. Various Construction
  3. Approx. 130 images generated from these plan files - ready to use or replace (keep in mind you'll probably only use about 30 on an ongoing basis) Many have been created for specific projects and may not be relevant.
  4. CAD Block library items; some older ones that I no longer use would need editing or replacing, but most are good-to-go. Keep in mind that text replacement based on your preferred font can be an issue that will require some time on your part.
  5. Plenty of great materials (in the files) that make Chief Architect look much better than what Chief provides.

If there's any interest, send me a PM and I can give more information. If there's any significant interest, I could follow up with a video as well as a demonstration of use.

  • 1 year later...

My experience is that when I develope something of value Chief will almost inevitably come up with an alternative to accomplish the same thing as a new feature within a couple of years.  In a way, that's great but usually they don't make it 100%.

There's also a tendency to eliminate something that's needed for my system to work - or that requires me to make changes to my system because of changes they made.  A great example was the "Measurement Class".  I had a lot of macros which used floating point NVPs and formatted them to feet, inches.  Those NVPs were changed to measurements vs floating point and I had to rewrite every one of those macros.

My bet is that Chief will at some point provide a way to "peel-back" the layers of a Perspective clipped by the Cross Section Slider , provide solid fill for objects (such as framing) cut in section and a few other enhancements.  Then we'll be able to very easily create 3D Details. It's not there yet but I'm pretty sure it will be.

I wouldn't hold my breath for that kind of feature and even if they did provide it, I wouldn't expect the flexibility needed or the control of appearance. I've been using 3d details for about 15 years with full control of what I model. I use Chief's tools to my advantage and I don't need to fight any settings to accomplish what I want. Because of that, creating new details and adjusting existing details is very quick and very stable. I have no reason to think that Chief will develop a 3d detail tool that automates the inclusion of components of flashing, tape, membranes, rebar, bolts, and other structural hardware.

Because I have created so many of them, I know what goes into making them look right and knowing the level of difficulty involved, I have absolutely no expectation of Chief developing any sort of tool that replaces what I currently do.

No arguement, I'm sure they would leave all of that out.

BTW, I think they should hire @Medeek to do the Stairs improvements. ;)
