GlobalSolar
Hello, This seems like it should be simple to do, but I've been searching the help files, tutorials and forums for hours and cannot seem to figure out how to change the shape of my roof. Basically I have a room with a very simple (one slope) roof plane. One corner of the room has a 45-degree angled wall, and I would like the roof to follow the same shape of the room (so there's an equal overhang on all sides). However, Chief Architect (Version X1) does not seem to allow me to create or modify my roof into any shape other than a rectangle. Enclosed is a simplified version of the plan with a light blue colored polyline indicating the shape I would like the roof to be. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

glennw
Use the Break tool to break the roof edge and then use the roof handles to shape as you want. You could probably use the Make Parallel tool to do just that.
GlobalSolar
Sorry about the missing attachment - I'm not sure what happened. Hopefully I successfully appended it (to my original message) this time. glennw: Would you kindly tell me a bit more about where to find the break tool? Why I tried "Break Wall" it didn't seem to have any affect on the roof plane; but maybe there's a different tool that you had in mind. Thank you both very much for replying! Kbird1
You need the Break LINE Tool on the Edit toolbar , not the break wall tool. or usually the shortcut is '3' on the keyboard for the Break tool , click to select he roof plane ,then hit 3 , then click either side of the corner and pull the "point" back in towards the house..... Can't download your plan it is "locked" ??? I don't have permission apparently......
GlobalSolar
So sorry about the problems with the plan. Unfortunately, I have no idea how it became inaccessible nor how to unlock it. Perhaps a few screen shots will help (added to original post). Kbird1: Interesting...I found information about the break tool you mentioned in Chief Architect's help file, but I cannot find the actual button anywhere. Anyway, your shortcut (of using number 3) worked - sort of. It allowed me to break the roof line, but then when I tried to move the broken line, it would only allow me to move it parallel to the previous one. In other words, I cannot angle the broken line (to make the triangular shape I'm after); it only removes a rectangular shape (similar to using two separate roof planes and connecting them). Thank you so much for your reply!
GlobalSolar
Update: It must be pure luck (because the first bunch of times I tried this it didn't work--probably user error), but using the "break line" tool in combination with the "parallel" tool, and I was finally able to get the shape I was hoping to create. Thank you again to everyone who wrote - you're lifesavers!
Kbird1
put a break then grab the corner and swing it around to the other line to get a triangle .......... but you got it now The Break line icon will ONLY show once you have selected something ( line based) , which is why you don't see it normally. X6 would do this automatically BTW.....
DavidJPotter
Here is a You Tube tutorial where I demonstrate manual roof editing, the join roofs tool and break tool in action, http://djpdesigns.net/html/join_roofs.htm DJP
GlobalSolar
Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions. For some reason, my program (X1, Build 11.5.4.17) doesn't seem to work the same way. For example, when editing my customized toolbar, I couldn't find the "break line" icon anywhere. (Even if it was greyed out when not available, I figured at least if I had it in my toolbar I could find it much easier.) Nor could I find it under any of the software's menus or submenus (not even in CAD mode; nor when a line is selected). David: Thank you for your helpful tutorial. Unfortunately, when I grab the corner pieces of any roof plane, they don't move at all (even if I hold down the "Control" key). The only way I was able to change the roof line is to grab the diamond-shaped pieces along the straight edge, and those are limited to moving in parallel lines. For some unknown reason, I cannot manipulate them the same way you do in your video. Either way, I'm thrilled that the shortcut buttons (number 3 and "make parallel" tool) were able to successfully accomplish the task. Thank you again to everybody who replied! Kbird1
Strange ...I have my Edit bar on the bottom see the attached pic for break line tool as in my pic , open a new plan and draw a single cad line , select it , and you should see it on the edit toolbar assuming this is a feature of X1 ? which I never had , so can't confirm for you. I am not sure if you can add it too a toolbar as it ONLY SHOWS IF SOMETHING IS SELECTED and the break tool can edit it..... M.
