Cabinet I posted is built as you ask.

I have also run into triples being a problem with glass on blind corners. For insets I us separate cabinets as Joe suggested but I alter the stiles. I used to make one stile "0" and the other 1-1/2" but now do 3/4 and 3./4. Once I have a set "combined" I copy it to another part of the plan out of the way, change everything on the copy to openings, send to CAD, then dimension the openings.

I tell clients I won't go any further than Sheboigan (sp?) didn't know where it was for the first year I said it not far from Kalamzoo I did a quick check to make sure I wasn't talking out of my hat about 2020 since that was from a faded memory. I don't have the catalog that I thought would show beaded loaded and I don't really want to mess with 2020 if I don't have to. The inset catalogs I do have loaded won't show beads. Besides it is a lousy option. I wanted to see just how bad it was to build one of these. Attached is a zip file with- a calibz file containing one door symbol and a plan where I made the symbol and then added a few cabinets to check it out. All the parts needed are there.(Though in the long run I'd change the "frame" to 4 pieces to get grain to run properly.) So you can disassemble the floating door to see- poly solid, 3d molding, and a door. The molding profile is on the floor if you zoom in. forgot to add it to the catalog. I then put in a few cabinets to see how it works. In vector view there are lines between the cabinets since they are actually doors, even with "0" clearance. You would need a ton of these one door for every drawer configuration. The upside is that once they are built in Chief the actual door style being placed inside the bead can be changed easily enough. Another problem would be combined cabinets - I do those standard in inset and specify the stiles so would need even more symbols to accommodate that. With all of that said I like how it looks. If I ever get some spare time (or the right client) I may undertake making some more OR trying to find a simpler way to make it so it is easier to change.

I can have em made that big, still need a back added either in the field or at the factory. Then you gotta get it in the house.

Create doors and drawers either in Sketchup or in a separate blank CA plan with p-solids and 3d molding lines if needed. The only way I can think of to do beaded inset would be to make a door symbol with frame and beading. Would likely work using traditional overlay setting overlaps to be flush. But you'd have to make each face configuration needed. Bit of work and I have a hunch easier in SU So far I haven't found it a problem with clients. If I did, would likely use 2020 instead. If I really needed it in Chief I might export cabinets individually out of 2020- ...nah, still a lot of work.

I run into a similar problem with cabinets where I can't snap to openings. I end up using detail from view but hat has it's own problems since it's not live.

Why Do Auto Interior Dimensions Repeat Dimension Strings Up To 5 Times?
MarkMc replied to zowie123's topic in General Q & A
Both those and NKBA dimensions don't work out for me. I end up using annosets- some to control shows and gets dimensioned (i.e.- just wall cabinets and openings, just base..)Then allow those layers to show on an overall plan. At least then I can just drag to get dimensions. A functional auto sure would be nice though. -
22 plus two OOB- mostly one to one- just doing interior work so different needs than many of you Fiddled with them for a while to begin with- once I had a good idea and the import annosets was getting messy I set up a spread sheet to clarify my thinking and needs. Here's where they are now- may eliminate one or two but keep the layersets but the "using active defaults" makes me edgy. (Meat and potatoes for me) 1 Cab All 1 Cab Base To work on base alone and dimensions just Base 1 Cab Wall To work on and dimensions just Wall Cabs 1 CabMap No labels, no dims, plain English descriptions for clients 1 Guides aid in placement 1 No Counter less clutter 2 Cab Base (cab 2change default ) same as above but when adding new finish- still shows first ones 2 Cab Wall ditto Counters - send for quotes Detail 1.5 Detail 3 (following are for remodel- dims locate wall surface, casings, show demo layer) E Existing E Lights E Remod Demo E Remod Electric E Remod Frame E Remod Mechanical (New construction-locate framing, and roughs) N_Arch New N_Electric Anno New N_Framing Anno New also have Y-For Cad (to send view to cad for detail) Y-for 2020 to send just a simple wall view-no layers or dims sent to CAD to import into 2020 allows quick wall draw and layout to get rough price. (OOB-don't really use these but kept em in case) Z_1/2” Scale Annotation Z_1/4” Scale Annotation

Can Anyone Compare Chief To Turbocad Pro Or Softplan ?
MarkMc replied to Fun2Learn's topic in General Q & A
I have both premier and interiors and lived with only interiors for a while. What you give up in interiors that matters IMO: Annosets-, cad from view (make up for it with Turbo cad deluxe or even double cad which is free), they have removed the ability to specify extra clearance for rough openings (a big problem of doing new construction, and the project browser. How much any that matters depends on workload and type of kitchen. If the kitchens are simple look at Pro Kitchen (and talk with them to nefotiate). If chief is warranted and you do a few jobs a year Annosets matter. If doing any new construction, additions or working from architects drawing lack of control over RO allowance is a royal headache and likely to cause order mistakes (stupid move) Project browser is "nice" to have as is detail from view. -
Corner Closet With Different Widths From Left And Right Sides
MarkMc replied to mealexmail's topic in General Q & A
Be a good idea to check clearances-remember Chief doesn't show doors in plan. With 1mm reveal the doors will overlap each other, need much more to open- a typical angled corner molding won't be enough.. -
I found it- Just kept shift selecting different types of object until it allowed for a block. Turned out there was a cad line in there I couldn't see- must have been placed to get a dimension to snap to for something else it wouldn't.

Laptop Woes: Graphic Card Recommendations
MarkMc replied to kitchenlifestyle's topic in General Q & A
I was going to mention what Richard said about which card is in use. I checked the Passmark on your card it's 340; and compared it to the card on my older machine (Quadro 880 passmark 372) . Mine is slightly more but not enough for the kind of performance you are seeing. I just checked a current kitchen on that machine (don't use it much) The plan (50 mb) has a few custom materials and a few largish symbols in it. Slower than what I'm used to but not bad at all.-Opened 6 elevations, 2 cameras and had one camera doline drawing- under a minute. When you go shopping you may want to check benchmarks for video cards and such. I use Passmark http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/index.php Forgot to mention-that machine has Interiors on it- file was created in Premier- But have never noticed a performance difference between the two- just features. One more thing- You're not orbiting in "line drawing" are you? That is much slower- get view in vector then switch.- 36 replies

Trying to swap a few cabinet configurations to a new plan and have some that I can't make an architectural block. What type of objects prevent blocking?

Secrets To Importing Kohler Sink Symbols?
MarkMc replied to Designers_Edge's topic in Symbols and Content
In a prior thread Joe answered how to get the counter cutout proper for the imported sink- worth a look. https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?/topic/443-undermount-sinks/?hl=sink#entry3000 Just did an inset job with Kohler Whitehaven - got it to work with -no top separation and opening for first face item. For that sink in inset it is the way I order it so the model helps there. No problem with the front being in the sink but with bottom set to proper height there is interference in the bottom of it but plan view is fine. Converted the dwg to a 3ds before import out of habit.- 12 replies

Can Anyone Compare Chief To Turbocad Pro Or Softplan ?
MarkMc replied to Fun2Learn's topic in General Q & A
I use Chief mostly and TC as needed. I stopped upgrading my TC Pro license back around 14 and switched to Deluxe 2d-3d. For my needs I don't see much of a difference (it is missing ACIS) but still fills a few gaps and it's far less expensive. -
For me the important piece is dimensions defaults. Should I start yet another annoset thread just for kitchens ; -^

12 plus 3 OOB slightly adjusted, expect to add 2 or 3- so picked 24 or less.

Frustrated With Chief ....may Be Going To Softplan
MarkMc replied to joedesign30's topic in General Q & A
Keys are commonplace in kitchens with 2020. Often a topic of discussion or sad stories. Here's my current; added the biner when I almost lost this one in a parking lot, added the usb extension after a friend had lock fail due to wear when meeting at a clients home. If I'd done that sooner I might not have broken one key and 3 usb ports over the years. I've become expert at redoing the Sentinal software, keep it on every machine. Most KD's insure them; otherwise you pay full software price for lost key (plus support). So now it's just the deductible ($1k) and since I'm not on support whatever that is today with reinstatement($900) I love CA's software key. -
Frustrated With Chief ....may Be Going To Softplan
MarkMc replied to joedesign30's topic in General Q & A
OTOH- Something has gone amok and need to remove the battery and power in emergency to shut down laptop. Tilt laptop to access battery- break USB port and key (once)- DAMHIKT -
Online overview is almost an hour. When I was evaluating I went briskly through one of those, mostly checked the feature list and used the phone to get specific answers. I took a one day course and later a shorter one- was worth it to me. Otherwise I hang around here and read everything and go to Chief Tutor once in a while. Has worked well for me and I'm a whiner.

I never really know just what a client means by "such and such style" until I spend some time on it with them. Not clear what you're after - lot of hoods in Sketch Up on Google Warehouse, pretty much the entire Stanici line which is nice since those can be had -(they do custom). -Chief has a Eurocast catalog- stone hoods -Building a hood in CA with parts(psolids, cabinet, doors, molding, etc) turning that into a symbol isn't too bad. Angled rail and stile panels can get tricky.

I'm not sure that it only picks up on the first send if I understand what you mean? In this case all the views were already on the layout, The page information was added afterward. When I was fiddling with archive files and save as I ran into one where the callouts were all fine- UNTIL I opened an elevation from the layout. Then the callout for that elevation only grew in size.
-
Thanks folks, worked out, bless you all. I cleared all page labels and titles which settled things down. I unchecked "below line" before I put back the titles and left labels blank. All is fine now. Is there a default somewhere for "below line" or does that have to be done manually every time?
-
I can't find any macros in any of the default callouts. I tried uncheck automatic and got smaller but not where it started. In the process of building a new layout which so far is working. Have to head home for dinner (or in trouble) will get back to it in an hour. Thanks.

What'd I do? I was working on the layout- I didn't go near the defaults. I was trying to figure out the page macros and how to put in a page table- all that went just fine I though. Changed pages and the things looked odd? I had at one point clicked on the callout tool in the layout but don't think I put one in place. I tried deleting the view, doing a few rounds of save as. Going through archives (only a little way back in time though) I can open an older plan and get back the original size, send to layout and it stays there fine. IF I go and associate the elevations (back clipped) with that file THEN the Callout grows. What'd I do Zip file has plan and layout. Callout.zip
