since I have always had multiple versions of Chief installed I select the plan to be opened via Windows explorer via right click and then select "open with" and choose which version of Chief to use for that plan in that dialog there is a setting to "always use..." for the .plan extension use this if you only want X12 to open .plan files Lew

Change roof plane to gullwing without rebuilding
lbuttery replied to KReads's topic in General Q & A
Glenn: perhaps my comments are as old as my suggestion back then the tools to "protect" manual changes didn't work very well and my partner who did most of the roof work was not impressed with them yet, here we have a poster having similar issues so I will step out of the conversation having made my suggestion again if it is not needed, so be it ... Change roof plane to gullwing without rebuilding
lbuttery replied to KReads's topic in General Q & A
I requested more than 12+ years ago that we be allowed to select some roof planes via clicks or edit area and only the selected planes would rebuild the basic workflow is to use automatic roofs until you need to go manual but if do make manual changes and then use auto-rebuild again you lose "all" the manual changes Lew -
Run both CA Premier and old CA version 10.8 on same computer
lbuttery replied to rocketman's topic in General Q & A
or a trial version of X8. or the X8 client viewer I don't see where X8 trial or client viewer is available on CA's website anymore so you may have to contact CA's customer service to get the download or have a Chiefer send it to you Lew -
Run both CA Premier and old CA version 10.8 on same computer
lbuttery replied to rocketman's topic in General Q & A
Once it opens in Premier I know I can never open it in version 10.8 again make a copy first then add V10 to the file name and this copy will open in 10.08 and never open and save it using a later version I always select the file name using windows explorer by right clicking and selecting "open with" and choosing the ver of Chief I want to use Lew -
I recommend buying used books from Amazon or other places buy a prior version to save money if you really like the book then buy the current edition I bought a large library that way Lew

Can a garage model be copied the house.plan file?
lbuttery replied to Chris_CapeCod's topic in General Q & A
Hi Chris: I'm a fan of the symbol method yet, I agree with Glenn that if buildings and terrain are "standard" then having all in one plan is a good choice as the complexity of "things" increases then using the symbol method becomes a good choice Lew -
an old hand advised me when I was starting don't add anything you don't need to the more they have to review the more likely they will find something "wrong" I did plans for a multitude of counties around the USA and they all want something different so contact them or review their websites and then ask - sometimes they have samples I worked for a multitude of builders and each wanted something different so ask for samples that they had submitted in the past there is no standard BTW: I had a 100% acceptance rate for the permit sets submitted but none were done in California - thankfully Lew

my partner and I lived in different states so we emailed the plan back and forth to keep conflicts down we added date and time to the file name we also added LBX12 or JKX12 to the file name so we knew who last worked on the file - the ver id was for times when we would need to work on a prior project to remind us which version it was done in Lew

Rob: no matter what you do someone is capable of screwing it up a friend had a homeowner client who left the cans of paint in the room before going to work client gets home and finds the cans still sitting there and the walls painted another color do what you need to do and leave good notes - warnings - etc discuss it verbally - have them sign something even then ??? Lew

Michael: thanks for the clarification I remember something about making copies or making links to items since the current library structure was introduced in X4 I have suggested that the folder structure be the same as it is on the website during X5 beta someone from CA said it was a great idea but to late for x5 Hmmm, X13 is coming and somehow I doubt it will be there Lew
-
Michael: so what is the method ? Lew
-
i believe you have to copy to the User category first then you can create folders there I think ... Lew

did you reboot the PC ? was it working yesterday ? did Windows do an update ? can you reverse that update ? Lew

Importing x12 user catalog into X11...can I go back!
lbuttery replied to Waugbee's topic in General Q & A
I follow this forum daily and read most posts if there were issues with X12 others would be posting about them I agree with Dermot that you are most likely having hardware issues do you have access to another computer - even for just conducting a test where you install X12 on that computer and see if the issue(s) persist Lew -
in a rush you can attach a pic of one to a polyline solid and then paste it over a door or make a material from a ,jpg one exact methods i have forgotten how - use to do it with shutters etc Lew
-
Mijo: NOTE: HD PRO users can benefit from following Chieftalk as well as Hometalk since PRO has many of the manual tools that Chief Premier has when posting be sure to note you are using PRO and when reviewing threads be aware of the limitations of PRO as not all info will apply to PRO Lew

you could try to find Chief 10, X1, X2 on ebay I would avoid X3 X4 would be a good choice the seller should be willing to work with CA to verify it is a valid license the transfer fee for a 1st seat is $50 - 2nd+ seats can be $$$ Lew
-
it is illegal to sell older keys if that version has been upgraded with verification with CA someone can donate their older keys I have already done so with some of my older keys and I only asked for $8 to cover mailing expense sorry but my Chief 10 key has already been donated Lew

Can I save a newer version file to an older version?
lbuttery replied to Rytikom25's topic in General Q & A
How many times have any of us had to save to a previous version? It comes down to probability of use -vs- effort to implement. it would be nice if it could be done there are many times or situations where this could be used but at this time CA states it is not feasible to do either programming wise or spending resources Lew -
Can I save a newer version file to an older version?
lbuttery replied to Rytikom25's topic in General Q & A
And yet Autodesk Revit figured it out... interesting I believe Revit etc is just cad lines Chief is 3D What do you do with features that are in the newest version that aren't in the earlier version ? just leave gaping holes ? I believe that if it could be done then CA would do it Lew -
and once again this newbie trap is sprung CA needs to make the solution intuitive as has been suggested for over a decade Lew

Not sure what Chief would give us since chimneys are so variable in size and design There are many standard types for chimneys I would expect a chimney tool could to 80% or better of most chimneys I doubt if there are many tools in Chief that can do 100% there are always special situations but there are standards also Lew
-
Why would a special tool be needed? Joe: and what about remodels of older homes ? drive down the road and see how many homes have chimneys maybe not in CA but here on the East Coast they are everywhere Lew
-
Bradley: that is the story I heard about the advent of roofs maybe someone else remembers ? it still amazes me about all the work arounds needed to do a chimney - even a basic one Chimneys are "standard" with houses and yet there is no tool to create them after all these releases simply amazing Lew
