Wright was warned about the structural issues with Falling Water and in his hubris he blew off the recommendations he was also famous for ignoring the wishes/wants of his clients an architect - yes but also a PITA to work with/for Lew

Build 3rd floor and copy entire 2nd floor exactly.
lbuttery replied to ajrare's topic in General Q & A
nope build the 3rd floor using 2nd floor as pattern then use "edit area" tool and Hold Position to copy contents of floor 2 to floor 3 Lew -
a new benchmark has been set. This is exemplified throughout time from the great pyramids, Angkor Wat, the Empire State Building, Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam just to name a few. I agree 100% and then there is residential architecture/building while some clients need a Frank Lloyd Wright design and can afford it the average client just needs a home they probably don't need a "vision" nor do they want to pay for one but they do deserve a building that isn't crappy either I have advised clients that they would be better served with an architect I attended a regular seminar by the AIA - "Meet and architect" he made it very clear he would NOT look at homeowner suggestions they obviously weren't interested in creating a "vision" it is up to the designer/architect to determine the clients needs and offer services accordingly Lew Lew

Should I save a copy of the plan and just clean it up for the export? Sherry: I would unless you can control "everything" with layers/layersets I haven't heard to much "chatter" about this but it is suppose to work Lew

Looking for Models and Material List Creation
lbuttery replied to HDReynolds's topic in Seeking Services
If the project needs TRUE BIM then Chief is sorely lacking While Chief models have the rudiments of BIM - that's all it has Chief lacks in the ability to share with other BIM apps either uni-directionally or bi-directionally Lew -
study the transform/replicate tool there is also a resize image tool but I preferred transform/replicate resize Lew

but the REAL problem is they don't know how something actually goes together Johnny: I agree without my partner I do not have the requisite knowledge to properly design a house or create a permit set he could be a chiefer without me - but not I without him together we made a good team I was full time - he was part-time I was running the business and getting the jobs I learned how to do about 70% of a model and would send the plan to him when I hit a brick wall I did the code research and attended every class on building and architecture that I could I read EVERY post on Chieftalk and would tell him the steps needed to accomplish a task that stymied me and sometimes within minutes he had the task done we had a 100% success rate on getting our permits approved on the first submittal but our permits were discussed/reviewed/signed/submitted by the builder per his standards/requirements you are right the knowledge has to be there - somewhere - to be successful Lew

Edward: well said rubberstamps drawings that were NOT done under his DIRECT SUPERVISION this is allowed in NY (maybe other states ?) - but the architect or engineer is really supposed to do a review first and they become liable for the work the architect I used for my addition missed that I had cross-ties and required an LVL King beam naturally got the "whoops I missed them" reply Lew
-
Larry: very well said Perry: I agree - a never ending discussion Lew

We need greater restriction with mandatory schooling/internships/continuing education and licensing even for "designers". I would agree - IF they are to sign/submit the permits our business model was to work with the builders to create the design, model and permit set the builder had to coordinate, review, sign and submit they needed the necessary knowledge to meet code etc we the "designers" needed to know what the builders wanted and how to draft it Lew

probably best to contact CA's tech support Lew

In 2005 I scoped out buying a color 3D printer for $65,000 then I found a nearby vendor that would produce 3D printed house models starting at $300 I still see a market for high-end houses, especially historic houses for 3D printed models for the homeowner to display on a fireplace mantel and to present to museums and historic societies for their displays of historic homes in the area Lew

I envision use of drones to snap aerial views of properties when doing site location for a new house or decks etc I did a project where the home owner had extensive flower beds from the house all down her hillside she wanted a large deck coming off the 2nd floor and wanted minimal impact to her gardening I had my friend climb a ladder and shoot a vast set of photos across the entire back then used Autostitch to create a panoramic view of the back yard then scaled it into Chief and then placed the deck to her satisfaction for posts and stairs and shade etc a drone would have been nicer to use drones would also be handy for siting hillside houses etc Lew

currently when a buyer closes on a house they get a "standard" survey and the building depts may require that or a more detailed survey when doing additions etc I see a day (probably far away) when most permit offices will require a 3D model of the as-built and the proposed construction thus, eventually they will be provided to buyers signed/stamped just as surveys are now at closing Lew

I started with Chief 9.5 Lew
