do a few of these for practice then determine how long it takes you do them include the time to get the email(s) from the client and reply back and setup time etc etc etc offer: levels of quality $X for Bronze $XX for Silver $XXX for Gold $XXXX for Platinum Gold or Platinum should be considered "photo-realistic" X doesn't need to be a doubling of the price - just a different amount Lew

Note: align with walls feature only works if the walls are off by a little Lew

Needing help tweaking my As-built home with original blueprints
lbuttery replied to mgianzero's topic in General Q & A
Note: HD PRO users can benefit from following the Chieftalk forum as well as Hometalk since PRO has many of the manual tools that Premier has such as roofs, framing, cabinets etc just be aware that some solutions may not apply to your limited version Lew -
Rene: until there is a "fix" make frequent backups by doing "save as" and adding date/time to the file name then a second "save as" as your standard file name to keep plan and layout linked together doing a dual "save as" is very fast and when in heavy edit mode I do them as often as every 5 minutes or when I finish a task I don't want to repeat there is still the problem of not noticing the "error" until later Lew
-
I had rooms / units constantly jumping around as far as ceiling heights go... Jay: ver10 is when I started requesting wall, room, floor, area locks I would get an room or area "right" and then later notice that "things" were off It may have been user error but I still would like a warning when Chief feels the need to change MY work Lew
-
If you do upgrade to Chief X10 keep your ver 10 installed and your hardware lock handy there is no way to replace the old hardware locks Starting with Chief X9 it is no longer capable of opening the older file format *.pl0,*.pl1 etc or you could download the client viewer for Chief X8 which is free and it can open the older files and then save them as .plan files (ver X8) which can then be used by versions X9 and later If you buy HD PRO you would still need to convert the older plans format when you no longer need your ver 10 hardware lock consider keeping it to donate to the next registered user who breaks or loses theirs and doesn't need to upgrade it is illegal to sell them so I have requested $5 to cover the mailing cost when I have donated my older unwanted locks Lew

Hi: you don't state what limits of Chief that you are running into ? have you discussed your needs to CA's sales team ? It may be possible that you need other software such as Revit or software that has true BIM capabilities hard to advise without knowing what your issues are Lew
-
Rod: the schools keep it fairly generic since each permit office has different requirements I learned to call the local office of each project and check their website to determine what they needed calling them also helps after you have narrowed your questions down to a few for one commercial project the builder and I scheduled a meeting with the permit officer to discuss what they needed face to face working in the DC metro area I had DC, MD, VA and 12+ counties across those jurisdictions that all had different requirements - including the size of the paper also ask the builder for samples of prior projects I found that each builder has different requirements some want to see drawing A and others drawing B its amazing how varied everything can be Lew
-
as Joey stated it is possible to design/draw commercial plans but they will need to be reviewed and signed/stamped by a licensed architect or engineer I worked in VA and did residential and light commercial there sometimes we created the cad drawings and then the engineer would review/signoff other times he would create a basic drawing we would do it over in Chief's cad and he would review/signoff other times he would create the final drawings and we would attached them as addendum to the plan set with appropriate reference notes in the plan set If you follow the IBC for most of the project and get the signoffs you should be ok the more "custom" work the more involvement from the engineer or architect Lew

Unfortunately Chief doesn't have inter-dependent BIM capabilities not does Chief use add-ons of any kind If Chief did have full BIM then the model could be exported to structural software that could do its "maigic" then send the plan back to Chief If you really need BIM capability then Chief is not for you you should discuss with CA's sales team to determine if Chief can work for your needs Lew
-
it could be a serious problem first try shutting chief down and then try again try a different plan or a backup of the plan to see if the plan has issues try rebooting contact CA's tech support basically that is a catch all error message that is given when the software gets to a place it didn't expect to get to since it doesn't know how it got there - it gives a generic error message Lew
-
Note: if the walls are too far apart - the "align walls tool" won't work Lew
-
is there an easier, better way? Lane: there should be there should be a Fireplace and Chimney tool set for creating "standard" chimney and fireplace configs this should have been added to CA long ago but alas ... Lew
-
Note: HD products can't edit features that are native to Chief Premier they can only be viewed the best version for this type of interaction is HD PRO as it has manual tools for roofs and framing and cabinets etc and the HD product needs to be the same version/year as Chief Premier Lew

Mark: If you upgrade now and get SSA you will get X11 when it comes - expected Q1 2019 If you wait until X11 is ready for release then upgrade will cost more and maybe even SSA If you can I would upgrade now - there may be Xmas sales but I wouldn't wait past Jan 1 - in case of price increases Next year after you have some experience you can request to be on the beta team and get to work with X12 earlier than the rest of us I'm too busy to do beta team - did it once back around X4 Lew

Merge As Built w/Remodeling Plan to create a Demo Plan?
lbuttery replied to Stevenplane's topic in General Q & A
the layout can work with multiple plans send the as-built images to layout from Plan A then send the remodel images to layout from Plan B add notes as needed Lew -
Chimneys have always been a p-solid and manually done. I started with Chief in 2005 and was amazed there wasn't a dedicated Chimney tool like there is for stairs etc Chimneys have been around for thousands or years and are fairly common to houses Surely a tool that can handle 80 - 90 % of chimney styles is possible. Lew
-
May I suggest you ask them via private messages Asking publicly is better as a new user might see that and realize they too need to do that when they post Lew
-
if person A, B, C all need to work on the plan at the same time - Chief is probably not the software you need If Person A works THEN person B THEN person C - Chief will probably work for you probably best to discuss your needs with CA's sales team to get the best advice Lew
-
keep the wall completely intact place the chimney within the wall - same as a door or window Lew
-
Lane: I forgot about that the system may be able to send enough info to CA to give an indication why its "throwing" the error but if you can reproduce it you should contact CA's tech support and send them the plan and the steps to reproduce Lew
-
I believe its a "catch-all" error message that is given when the code arrives at an unexpected place and yet is there anyways Not knowing how it got there it issues the error message instead of crashing if you can reproduce the error message then send the plan to CA's tech support if you can't then there is probably not much they can do but let them know anyways - if others report the same problem it may give them clues Lew
