  1. I've played with this and it feels to me that Mac version of CA runs a bit better. It's not super noticeable, but after spending some time in the app it just felt a bit snappier. So you know, I was using the exact same processor in the PC as Mac (it was a hackintosh). The graphics card in the PC was theoretically better even.
  2. Because Chief is poorly optimized for current hardware. Its a real shame.
  3. You might be better off looking into Lumion or Twinmotion for these services. I've seen Chief's VR and its no-where near what those other companies provide...and Twinmotion is free right now (though currently Lumion is higher quality).
  4. I believe in Chief those cards would handle themselves fairly similarly. I've actually had good success with both Nvidia and AMD cards, and it may be just me but if I was doing an AMD processor built I would probably keep that theme throughout.
  5. Thats an interesting idea... going to try.
  6. Im doing an egress diagram for a building, and wanted to use thick dashed lines for the path. When i do this in Chief it come out with rounded corners for dash marks. Is there anyway to make these square?
  7. I personally use auto-dormers for clerestory light dormers and false dormers. When I have to have a "real" framed dormer for living space I model by hand. There are always exceptions to this general rule of thumb, but that is how I view it.
  8. For fun I generally looked at the drawing set, and this home is complicated enough I would recommend you finish your working drawings with an engineer or architect. You're going to need to show how a lot of what you have designed actually gets constructed, and there are some code issues I can see with the design as its currently drawn.
  9. Overall x11 to us seems to have severe performance issues - especially in legacy files.
  10. Of course the major drawback to this tool is dealing with openings. Material regions do auto-cutouts. This is exactly the kind of thing that drives me nuts about Chief. Its brilliantly simple until you quickly find the gaps that require messy work-arounds. Material regions should, in my opinion, go around a corner or at least have the option to.....or moldings should have the option to cut out openings in both vertical and horizontal areas.
  11. Chief is either really well optimized on older, slower systems, or very poorly optimized on high end new systems - since the performance jump between low and high end computers seems negligible.
  12. Yep, you are correct - I guess what I meant was to model this correct its a PITA in Chief trying to make either molding lines or solids work compared to most modern BIM apps that have straightforward modeling action to produce a predictable result. I feel the folks at Chief are a bit too comfortable with the idea of work-arounds being considered "best practices".
  13. I think its areas like this Chief could seriously improve modeling tools. I too struggle with these kinds of operations and its way too much trial and error with sometimes unpredictable outcomes.
  14. Yeah, I can overclock the i9-7980XE to nearly 5GHz - but I typically run around 4.6. Again, if I had to do it all over I probably would have just stuck to the i9 9900K for both systems since I dont think I get 3x the price/performance value. The i9 9900K is a great chip.
  15. The i9-7980XE is overclocked - like most should be. I also have the i9 9900K (home office system) and its overclocked and a great chip, but the i9-7980XE outclasses it without question. Is it worth $1,500 more for the i9-7980XE - that I would say no....but anything CPU intensive and the i9-7980XE stands out. I'm sure the X299 architecture plays a part in that too.
  16. So i know Chief folks said get gaming graphics cards, but I am assuming that is primary for "standard" views and perhaps PBR? Anyways, i notice when a Chief file is loaded up with all the framing and notes things get slow just in the 2D plan view panning around - and I have an incredibly fast system. My question is, does anyone know if the Quadro cards would help with this aspect?
  17. I was instantaneous on my 2080 Ti and about 2 seconds on my 1080 Ti. People may be timing their "start" upon clicking on the camera, but I started my timer when I saw the render progress bar inside Chief. There is a 1-2 second delay just entering the camera view.
  18. I personally use Floor 0 too, but mainly since i really don't do an extra plan sheet beyond the basement/foundation plan. I typically just show wall sections in the areas that have foundation below to describe the condition. I can say i've had foundation subs ask for a "clean" foundation plan without the floor plan too - but we typically find a middle ground.
  19. If you want to run a dual graphics card system then you should consider Mac. Win 10 and SLI is awful. Some apps support SLI and some you literally have to turn it off or it shuts it off for you...and then you forget to turn it back on, and frankly I never fully trusted it was on even when it said it was. I think a single 2080 Ti is the best bet if you want Nvidia. If you really really want to use dual card system on Win 10 then I would actually recommend you use crossfire. AMD seems to have a better handle on dual card support which is probably related to their development with Apple. I've pulled my other 2080 Ti out of my system and am allowing an employee to use it, since the $ to performance ratio just wasn't present.
  20. Yes, its pan and zoom....also general edits. It feels like working under water. X11 just feels a bit worse than other releases.
  21. Chief seems to Choke more than I remember on finished plans. I have a very fast system and id doesn't seem to improve things too much, which means that its an optimization thing with Chief. Would the nvidia quadro help with the plans?
  22. If your clients are really looking for a reproduction of the Modern twist to Dutch Caribbean Colonial featured at Ally's Beach you should probably first spend a serious amount of time learning the programming side behind the execution- even above trying to mechanically make it work in Chief. Take it for what its worth, but you cannot "apply" this style to a design to get the outcome comparable to the examples.
  23. Bingo - that was it. I guess I didn't realize a material region acts differently on an attic wall. Thank you everyone for looking at this situation... i should have just posted the plan.
  24. So I think i found a bug where material regions don't cut themselves over angled window. Can someone help verify this before i submit?
