New Computer Advice? Chief Orthographic View Speed
jcaffee replied to JennyB's topic in General Q & A
Make sure you've created a custom profile in the NVidia Control Panel for Chief, and that you eliminate settings conflicts between CA and NVidia. jon -

Ray Trace Renderings Still Look Plain…. Help!
jcaffee replied to Craigevans's topic in General Q & A
I made changes to the RT settings, background, grass, driveway, and sun (a north pointer must be defined if using a sun angle line). Nice design. jon Riviera.zip- 34 replies

Craig, post your plan. That does not look like a ray trace from X6. jon- 34 replies

Mick, try setting your output to 12" x XX" (Retain aspect ratio) @ 300dpi w/15-20 lights, env lighting, ambient occlusion, and photon mapping. You'll peg your RAM quickly. jon

Bob, Experience of over 20 yrs in tech consulting. Actually, the big dig I have on IBM PC/Lenovo is they spec machines that always seem to have one or two components that are just not up to snuff (In the case of the Y50 it's the 5400RPM drive architecture). This leads me to believe that they're dumping old tech MoBos with that model. I know the ASUS ROG laptops have SATA III sub-systems, but Lenovo??? Can't find a mention of it (honestly, didn't go digging to deep). jon

Shawn, Ensure you've set application profiles for Chief Architect Premier X6.exe AND ChiefArchitectRayTracer.exe in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Try various setting to eliminate conflicts between CA and the NVIDIA drivers. Ray trace will use 100% of CPU resources. However, I don't have any problems letting the RT cook in the background while doing other, non-CA, stuff. jon

Sneak Peak Into Chief X7 - Posted On Facebook
jcaffee replied to HumbleChief's topic in General Q & A
When we were having this discussion last year (or the year before, or before, before), at some point, if I recall correctly (it may have been a Nitrostat induced fugue state), the reasoning from the gang at the Deathstar re: not moving forward with UI redesign, was concerns from 1/2/3/etc. large customers (Installed license base, not physically large). I believe re-training $$ was the core issue raised. While a valid concern for those customers, failure to innovate or even maintain a "keep up with the Joneses" pace of change, hurts the customer perception of CA as an advanced software provider. Companies that fear their customers' response to innovation and change just don't know how to sell their product. You mitigate fear with solid training and education programs to re-invigorate, re-inspire. and re-focus tired employees who just go through the motions. "Yes it's new you dou... customer, you. It's new and wonderful and we have an onsite, cost-conscious training evolution tailored just for your firm. Now sign the contract before your competitors do, or you'll be..." Etc., etc. Yawn. It is what it is. jon -
Keith, come across the bridge, where these days everything is some kind of Craftsman knock-off--easy-peasy. One set of defaults/template fits all. Seriously though Opie (OP), learn default setups and drawing in clockwise rotation. jon
