It's fantastic and great and huge and elegant and........... elegant comes from Milania....

I think what Perry is saying is..... after you have relinked the plan 2 to layout 2, he saves and closes both plan and layout to "make it stick". I do the same thing. If you can now reopen the plan and the links look good, all is well.
-
Very well put..... and Perry's template method does the same as the SAM. He is copying a layout with an already associated plan, saving both as project #2 and relinking. I have all my cameras linked to the layout and so does Perry. Both methods are very very similar.
-
No, you can not do it that way. You can not reference a layout to some job somewhere else. The key is to use the same layout and same plan from a previous job, do your relink, and what you have essentially done is to create an EXACT DUPLICATE of the previous job.... and then you are editing the new job.

I can't follow what you guys might be doing wrong, but every one of my elevations and sections NEVER NEVER NEVER need to be resent to layout. I think Perry and Joe will confirm this. The only time I send something to layout are the CABINET ELEVATIONS. Joe might have the explanation when he says that the cameras are already in plan.... my cameras are already in plan. I have 16 section cameras, 4 elevation cameras and about 25 cabinet elevation cameras. As Perry has pointed out, the cameras are moved to appropriate locations for the new plan. I only use the cameras I need. A big advantage for me with having the views in layout is I already have the misc. notes and dimensions already in that view, I do not need to recreate them.

Michael, I appreciate the vid, I doubt I will use that for doors, but I may use that for something else. When putting in doors, I put in the first door, set up my door label, whether new or existing or pink or blue, and then I copy that door to other door locations and then quickly change that door to either a garage door or a sliding door or a pocket door etc. I have found it is quicker and easier that shuffling through a library or whatever. I don't know which method is quicker, but what is great is we have multiple methods to achieve the same results.

Graham, I am confused, I am telling you that I can relink EVERY VIEW IN LAYOUT TO A PARTICULAR PLAN in one fell swoop. here is a vid https://youtu.be/oK7-1ePBQQw
-
Unless I am missing something, your can relink in "one fell swoop". Elevations never need to be resent... unless I am missing something. You might want to look at some video on the SAM. You might save another hour off of project time.

I have 3 files. As built, Proposed and a details file.

Yes, I still use the SAM. I know CA recommends not using the SAM. Today I had to set up new 24x36 borders and 30x42 borders for a new client. If I did to use the SAM, I would of needed to do this twice or I would of needed to set up in template layout before beginning. Both methods work well, inefficiency occurs if neither method is not used.

this reminds me that we can now delete MOST layer sets.

Does this make sense? I don't mean to say "does Tommy's statement make sense", I am asking if the wall changing makes any sense. BTW Tommy, thanks for this insight. Truly, why would anybody want the wall to change to an invisible interior 4 wall because I changed the ceiling height on one side of the room divider. This is the kind of stuff that must drive people nuts.

If you think about it, and I did vids on this, if you have a separate ANNO SET in LAYOUT (I SAID LAYOUT), for each builder, and if you have a separate LAYER SET for each builder IN LAYOUT, and since ANNO SETS are king, select the correct anno set in layout, this will trigger the correct layer set that has the correct layers predefined for a particular builder. I have been doing it this way for years now, I think Perry does something similar. And this is another reason I use the SAM in lieu of template Method. The latest layout will have the correct anno sets etc. in layout for the newest builder.

That is why he can afford to live in Carmel and we are stuck in the slums north of Tijuana.

Good catch. My bad, I assumed it was a cmu wall with no finish.
-
I heard this breakdown at one time..... 40% prelim 40% construction docs 19% Plan check and wrapping things up 1% on phone with wife.

Play with your window ROUGH OPENING SIZES. You chose 1/2", if you look closely, you will see a gap between your window and your block wall... change the RO to zero and see how that changes the model. RO for block walls behave differently than RO's for framing.... at least I think so.
-
Well, ain't I a pistol, check your ROUGH OPENING SIZES,.... ZERO out the rough opening and it should look better... I ain't saying it's perfect, but it is better....... Suppose the wall was wood framing and you had a 3" rough opening? Would you have the same problem... I don't think so because the EXTERIOR FINISH magically covers the gap.... at least I think so... bottom line, for your situation, change the ROUGH OPENING for the SGD.

Got it. Yeah, if we start throwing in F.F., it does complicate things a bit. The stairs do not have a finished floor.

Good catch Larry.

Don't, turn on roof labels in the ref set...... the roof labels are separate from the roof planes. You say the roof labels are turned on in ref set, I do not believe it. Turn roof labels on in the ref set. Post plan if you can't figure it out.
-
I cannot explain why you would of had that problem..... except maybe..... and I have not seen this.... but you can now define the top of the stairs as either at the top tread or at the second floor level.... thank goodness they finally put this in. BTW, I just tested on an old plan, I did not have problem..... so, I do not know what went wrong with your plan. Did Brian confirm he too experienced the problem"

........... The SAM or the Template method, essentially the same idea, the SAM gives you the latest and greatest, the Template method means you do not need to strip the old project out of the plan file. 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Pick what works best for you.

Someone might find this video interesting. It is the SAM Method vs Perry's Template Video. I did not rewatch this, I did this several years ago, but it might shed some light on the different methods.
