CDFV is what I always use (more often than not it only requires copying a single line and then using Paste Hold Postion) . You can also unlock your cross-section lines layer in some cases.

facer, How long have you been using Chief? How long have you been using it for commercial? And why did you choose chief over the competition in the first place?

No way that I personally know of to move labels to a different layer. If someone else knows of a way it would be news to me. There may be a better way, but the best solutions I can think of would just be to... A. suppress the label for one or the other and then if necessary add your own manual label B. turn one of the layers off entirely. This would turn the label for that object off as well. C. place a polyline with no line style and a solid fill set to the background color over one or more labels as necessary. Just put that "CAD mask" on its own layer and turn it on and off as necessary. D. copy/paste in place an extra item, put the copy on its own layer and then suppress the label. Turn the appropriate layer on or off depending on the view. Which method to use would just depend on the situation.

I think that's actually where it used to be if I remember correctly. Probably like everything else. People were complaining because it didn't make any sense to them. So they moved it and now it doesn't make any sense. I could be remembering incorrectly but I'm pretty sure it was in the layer display options dbx when I first started using Chief.

What exactly are you copying? A text box? A rich text box? Text from INSIDE a text box? Where are you copying it from? The plan? Layout? A CAD detail? An elevation view? A plan view? Where are you trying to Paste it? Into a plan view? Into an elevation view? Into layout? Into a CAD Detail? Into a text box in one of those places or are you just trying to drop right into the view? Is it text that was produced inside Chief or brought in from somewhere else? And lastly, Joe gave you a very good suggestion... Attach the plan.

If you have the option I would strongly recommend an SSD.

See the specs in some of our signatures. Mine is the 8GB and I have no problems.

Try cleaning the heads on the magenta and black cartridge and see if that helps.

Yes it would. I've said it before, but we can also very easily use a custom line style, double click the point marker tool to change the layer, and/or Current CAD Layer to place construction lines or points on a unique layer for very quick and easy deletion. Not exactly a hotkey, but pretty stinkin' fast. And yes...I was using points like "construction lines" but the same general method would work equally well with lines.

That's a good observation Nicinus. The printer heads (or whatever they are called) might be getting old or dirty and having a harder time with thin lines. Specifically the ones for the red cartridge.

Are you saving to your computer? To your C drive, to an external drive? To OneDrive? To DropBox?

Here's a quick video. By no means does it cover all the various methods and options but hopefully its enough to give you an idea of some of the other possibilities. This was done with simple line work, but variations of the same methods can be used for lighting layout, post layout, timber layout, the list could go on. I know a lot of you are probably familiar with these methods but a few of the comments here have led me to believe a number of others might not be. Hopefully this helps...

That is definitely not true. As mentioned above you can use either of the Align/Distribute tools and they would actually be a lot faster and easier in a lot of situations.

Still doesn't exactly crop things, but I was able to find a way to more quickly select items for trimming using the fence tool. Here's the process that I've found works best for me. 1. Draw the polyline that represents your selection area. 2. Copy/Paste In Place that polyline, hold down C and use one of the corner edit handles to concentrically resize your new polyline to be just slightly larger than the original (you may need to hold down control as well to override other snaps). This will serve as your fence for selecting lines to trim. 3. Select your original polyline. 4. Click trim, click Fence,and then select the larger polyline made in Step 2. The fence you select in that step will fence select the line work that will trim to the first polyline selected. 5. Group select and cut, copy, or delete remaining linework as necessary. Again. Still not a true crop tool, but it speeds the process up a bit anyway.

Did you save that same word document as a PDF first? It might be an issue with the save/print to PDF process.

It's in the structure tab now. Roof planes are set up to work more like rooms now with the added layer capabilities. Kinda like we have Ceiling Structure, Ceiling Finish, Floor Finish, and Floor Structure definitions...we now have roof Surface, Structure, and Ceiling definitions.

Yessiree. No one can say you didn't at least try. And who knows, you may be guessing correctly!

I am always glad when people attach the plan without being asked. I hope this serves as an example for everyone else. It would really help if you could describe what exactly you're having a problem with though.

I obviously haven't seen your plan, but for things like deck posts all you often times have to do is group select them and use Align/Distribute Objects...Space Evenly or Distribute Centers Evenly. Often times no need for drawing any extra lines at all. Align/Distribute Along Line (using a wall or some other existing object) could work equally well for that situation too.
