  1. EVERY view panel you have on your screen has its own layer set.  Just because it is turned on in one view does not mean it is in the other view.

Use ALDO (Active Layer Display Options) at all times and you will be able to see easily what is on and what is not.

    Hi Ryan,

Yes, agree with that. I noticed that your MB runs on 16GB memory. Happy with that? Was considering 64GB but probably stick with 32GB as a maxed-out option is verrry expensive here in NZ

If it is your main computer I would go with 64 and if travel 32.  I had to buy that laptop last minute due to an emergency while traveling and was only able to get 16.

Thanks and so, in my digital locker, I have the option to update to X15 with the same License code as my X14.  I guess because my SSA auto renewed in January???  So is this X15 version going to remain usable if my SSA cancels in the future?  Or should I just stop where I am now at X14 and not upgrade any of my past plan designs to X15?

Once it is in your locker you maintain indefinite use of it.  You will not get newer versions if your ssa becomes expired in the future.  Basically keep your SSA current and nothing changes.

I've deleted the end rails and dragged the front porch rails around, I still get this weird event. I can't find anything that changes this... it's been a long week.

Sorry unclear what is the problem.  What are you trying to do and why did you remove the end railings?  If you don’t want to see them make them invisible instead and maintain your room definition.

You can do it with multiple roof planes but it is generally a variety of different size panels and members especially when it has an angle like he is showing.  If it is a straight glass enclosure room I would use roof planes as well assuming the panels are going to be the same.  In these they will have some cross members on the roofs as well.  Doing it with the polyline convert to skylight allows you to place them exactly as that is done.  You can still do it with the roof panels and framing but you will need to do manual framing to show cross members as they are not in the same location so as you use purlins.

Ryan, how is this going to change things?  chief couldnt even model what i showed correctly in the first place, must be too complicated being so close to roof edge?

Your roof needs to not have any overhang and have glass walls to the outside just like it would be built in person.  If you are trying to show more of a screened room with panel sections as you showed use skylights.  But the polyline convert to skylight tool will help you get non rectangular and custom sizes.

  7. Yeah sorry I can’t tell what is what in that picture.  A typical sun room can be done with normal roofs and adjusting the roof material or a glass roof material with skylights depending on what the exact look/type you are going for.

    Hello.

When I change the dimension of a wall sconce, the 2D symbol resizes too. I've never had this happen before when resizing electrical symbols. How do I prevent this from  happening ? I've attached 2 pictures for reference.

    Thanks in advance!

When you are resizing the item look at the 2d panel in x15 with that symbol open.  there is an option to resize.

BTW Symbols and content is where you share symbols and content with others.  this would be best served in the Q&A section of the forum.  It is a great question that many others can learn from as well so maybe an admin can move it there for you?  @Dermot@scottharris

Also it is much appreciated and very helpful for a variety of reasons if you can update your signature. It will help you from having to state what version, hardware etc that you have.  BTW very nicely formatted question that is easy to see what you are talking about.  Wish all the questions were this easy to understand!

@rgardnerand @Renerabbitt, do you guys ever have problems with a layout trying to read information from the wrong file if multiple versions using the same name are open at the same time?  I would assume not but it does seem a little weird having several files with the same name open at the same time.

In thinking this through, that might actually be my biggest concern aside from the file bloat.  I'm not sure I would mentally be able to handle that very well.  I could easily see myself with 2 version open at the same time and accidentally making a bunch of changes to the wrong one.

Takes self discipline when having two versions open ( I do this when a client has redone some work and it needs more work to fix their file versus copying and pasting some changes into my file, but try not to work with two versions open when possible.)

You plan files are renamed for each new project since something like "Koenig_New.plan" would obviously need to be renamed "Smith_New.plan" when you start drawing for the Smith's.

I have a template folder for each client that I duplicate and rename using the appropriate template files.  In this particular case Koenig is a client's addition project so there is an AB version and a New (sometimes referred to as proposed depending on the client's preferences) file which has various reference views to the AB for demo, etc. as well as a layout file.  Those templates are renamed at the beginning of each project.  The AB version I do a save as overwriting the place holder new file when complete to produce the New/Proposed version at that point there is a layout file general relink of the AB and new file relinking from the template AB and template New versions.

A way around any relinking at all (although that is super easy at the overall level in the layout since the different views are already linked to a template AB and New files.) would be to Edit all and copy and paste into the other setup New plan template file which may be worth doing... hmmm....

with my system as it includes design version and iteration in my naming convention
    yymmdd-Design Version-Iteration-Job Name-Drafter name
such that 230405-DRVA-V2-Smith-RG is today's Version A that has a galley kitchen with the dishwasher on the left and was drafted by Ryan Gardner and 230405-DRVB-V1-Smith-RR was drafted by me and is a corner kitchen version of the same job drafted on the same day.

This is the only difference between my personal system and Rene's (As I mentioned above mine is a slightly adapted version from Rene's).  For me 90% of my work is for other designers now as I try to be semi-retired (hmmm working 30 hours a week can that actually be semi-retired???, Maybe I need to slow down more???) so I seldomly work with clients direct that are going to have tons of iterations on the same day.

Can you show one of those folders expanded?  I think you and Ryan are using 2 different (although similar) systems.  His seems to be more like the first Option I showed above whereas yours seems to be more like the 2nd Option.

    For Clarification:

    image.thumb.png.29569a91bdc1b4e67f334a800bb18423.png

    image.thumb.png.f61553fa0cd16ca2a4e505639747c579.png

So you can see the old versions in the archive file.  I only put them in the archive (set to not backup) once I am in Construction doc versions and/or I know the old versions are ruled out.

  13. 22 minutes ago, Alaskan_Son said:

he first version I showed describes a system with an identifying name being assigned to the plan and layout file (this is the one you seem to be using).

No.  I do not change the file names ONLY the containing folder name which has the date on it.  In the rare case where in the same date I have various versions I always maintain a "clean" non adjusted version where It stays linked.  Once I have a new version from the iterations that version gets renamed to the same as the "clean version" and the link stays as it is looking for that name.  For me that is EXTREMELY rare.

I wonder then if your system wouldn't be better served using this folder structure instead where (hypothetically at least) no relinking would ever be necessary:

    Smith Project

              |__________Version 1 Folder

                                                 |__________My Plan

                                                 |__________My Layout

              |__________Version 2 Folder

                                                 |__________My Plan

                                                 |__________My Layout

    Johnson Project

              |__________Version 1 Folder

                                                 |__________My Plan

                                                 |__________My Layout

This is my system (actually @Renerabbittis the one I learned this from.  In this case Version 1 folder would be something like "20230403_Smith", and Version 2 would be "20230405_Smith"  inside I would have 2023_Smith_AB, 2023_Smith_New, and 2023_Smith Layout (assuming a remodel iteration instead of a new construction obviously.)

If at some point I have several possible iterations the "my plan" and "my layout" files stay linked.  I may have a "my plan_A" "my plan_b".  Once an alternate has been adopted I will archive all other options in an archive folder inside of that folder and rename the "final" file to "my plan" again so that it stays linked.

This works well for me since chief will always pull from the same folder first before looking elsewhere.

    1. Oh that’s genius!

That is a good practice to do on revisions instead of having files such as: "johnson_new_v3.6.plan"

Instead you would have a folder such as 20230404_Johson with files: 2023_Johnson_AB.plan, 2023_Johnson_new.plan, & 2023_Johnson.layout.  Changes tomorrow and you duplicate the folder and rename it 20230405_Johnson with the same files inside.

    Good Evening,

I am moving an existing building on a lot.  I have fully developed the existing terrain (it's slopes), and have also fully developed the existing structure.  The project now involves literally picking up structure and relocating it on the lot.

QUESTION - is it better to selected the structure and move it on the lot (like we do in real life), or am i better off shifting the terrain under the building.  For this exercise I've done it both ways, and while both are easy tasks and seem to work without issue, I am getting slightly different results in how the slope lot 'hits' the building.  The 'Subfloor above terrain' dimension isn't changing in the dialogue box.

    Any thoughts?

    thanks,

Never move the building always the terrain.

Has anyone used a curved monitor?

I used to use a 32" curved spectra brand 2k monitor and I liked the curve.  I recently upgraded to twin 28" BenQ 4k monitors which I love the 4k ability but I couldn't find the right monitor in curved in right size that was 4k that could fit on my desk (2 monitors can take up lots of real estate as you know) and wouldn't break the bank since I upgraded computers at the same time.

Some good input on monitors in this thread:
