Hey there. Im trying to import collada files from sketchup 3d warehouse into X14. The issue im having is that usually there are additional items that import with the item that I want to use. When I try to edit the cad block  in Chief to delete the additional items it shows them as deleted the 2d view but not in the 3d view. Any help would be great.

See example of file... it has 2 simpson brackets. I only need one of them. model 2.dae

Simpson has a Chief library with many 3d symbols already.

Hi I'm trying to recess a window into a thick wall 550mm thick with angled sides to the walls, see image attached.  I can only get the side walls of the recess to 90 degrees, anyone have any suggestionss?

Try doing a search of the forum.  This has been asked and answered many times.  It is a combination of molding lines and custom casings.

Yes that works although there is an unwanted leading 0 in numbers above 9. ie. W208,W209, W2010, W2011. Thanks for the tip. I will have to play around some more. As great as the improvements in X15 are, I could do with much better flexibility in schedules for a start..

Why not stitch schedules together based on floor and have W1-xx W2-xx etc?  Very simple and accomplishes what you want.

Any suggestions on how to get recessed downlights on the main level stairs going to the basement to follow the ceiling being made by the stairs above?

    Screen Shot 2023-03-10 at 5.29.34 PM.png

Place the light on the level of the room that has the ceiling you want it in.  So if your second level ceiling is above your stairs going to the first level place the light on the second level.

Hi there, I have been a chief user for nearly 20 years, though I have taken a 6-8 year break recently from design work. Back at it again and my existing plans and new plans I draw the floor platforms are missing. Even the garage walls do not come all the way down to meet the foundation. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong, it used to just always draw that in the 3d view. Any ideas?

    examples:

I am using version x3. I tried searching the forum for an answer. no luck.

Welcome back to Chief.  Lots of changes since you left.  The other users greatly appreciate it if you can fill out your signature with which version you are using and some basics of your system as it helps with answering questions like this very one.

In this case it is a little hard to tell but ALWAYS when something is not showing first steps would be to make sure the proper layer is turned on in THE VIEW you are seeing the issue.  Just because the layer is on in the plan file doesn't mean it is on in the layer set for the 3d as each view has it's own settings.  Another thing to check is that you have framed your floor so the system is actually there in the model.  Otherwise post your plan.

  6. And just as an FYI you are using version X15 not v15 (actually v25 as after version 10 they went to x1).  I know that sounds picky but it really helps others to know exactly what you have and will be more likely to help you out with an issue if they don't have to go hunting for the correct information or figure out what you are describing or working with.  Just a trick to help you in the future.

X15 Beta if you’re not a Beta tester

X15 was released into PUBLIC BETA last week.

    27 minutes ago, DBCooper said:

So if you are using X15 right now (25.0), then you are using the beta version (even though it doesn't say "beta" anywhere in the program) which means you are indeed a beta tester.  You should report any problems you find so that they can try to fix them before the official release.

Or, if you don't have the patience for dealing with problems like this, then you should stop using X15 until it is released.  There is no guarantee that you won't find these problems later though.  My philosophy is that the earlier I find a problem and the earlier I report it, the more likely that it will get it fixed sooner rather than later.

DBCooper is correct here.  When you downloaded it states beta as did the email you received and the post here in the forum which means it is still being tested.  If something does not work the way you like or you find a bug you are supposed to report it so that the designers can fix it or consider the change prior to full public release.

Surely there is a way to include several rooms in a single electrical schedule?  But I cannot find it...

i.e. I have a master bath, toilet closet, and shower that are separate rooms so that the room moldings work for each.  Then I have two master closets and a hall attached to the master bedroom...

I want ALL these rooms to be considered the MASTER SUITE, and I want a single electrical schedule to reference the MASTER SUITE instead of 8 schedules.

Set all the other symbols of that type for that floor to not be included in schedule and do a schedule for the entire floor (I.E. just the electrical units for your master suite would be marked to include in schedule.)

What's the best way to create a custom two cabinet vanity with a single top drawer head across both cabinets?  See the attached drawing.  I could make the top drawer area of each cabinet a blank area then manually apply a drawer head across them both but is there a better way?

    Thanks

How do we get this to show in the Door schedule?

Not sure which door you are referring to as I have not purchased the for sale door but the free one shows up in the door schedule but has it listed as a doorway.  You can edit the symbol to show up in the garage door category of your door schedule or anywhere you want it to.

Is that really a landing?  If I was to make a guess, I might think you created that landing by some other method or that your stairs are not actually connected to it.  Or maybe you created the landing on the second floor instead of on the first floor? You should create all 3 stairs and the landing on the first floor and then they should show up on both.

Seeing as Aldo is showing several custom layers for solids I am guessing DB is correct about your landing.  But either way select all of your landings and stairs as a group use the "cut" command then move to level 1 and use the "paste in place" command.  If the second floor has that area as open below then you will see them on both floors.

    Otherwise post your plan.

Thanks Gene! It seems a bit counterintuitive to have the ceiling height be 36", but that did work.

I had the ceiling height at 109 1/8" and manually adjusted the baseline height, so something with that was causing it to be off.

Search baseline heights in the forum and help file.  It is not where you think it is.

The cost totally defeats the purpose of doing the scan yourself.

I just did a 2200 sq ft 2 storey asbuilt house measure with chief and a laser measure device right into chief on my laptop in an 1.5hrs.  ( had a bunch of levels, normally would take 1hr)

if it cost me $330 to do this and drive there and back I could just pay a local asbuilt business to go and do the measure and provide a cadd dwg.. for less than $330..

Although I am not a huge fan of canvas's output.  I just want to know who you are paying less than $330 to do a full measure and model to?  I pay an engineer $500 if he is doing the engineering portion to do the measure for me (actually its in the engineering price to the client) and I think most services are much higher.

I know that there is a simple answer to this but I can't seem to figure it out and I am getting impatient!

When I create an automatic Roof and ignore the 2nd floor to create a Cape type roof, but without the knee walls, the second floor walls remain, see image.

I thought that there was a way to have the roof cut those walls off at their (roof and wall) interface?

When you manually edit walls you turn off the parametric behavior of those walls.  So any changes you do afterwards chief thinks you want those walls how you set them manually and will no longer adjust them. 99.5% of the time there is no reason to manually adjust the wall heights.

the three plan file approach would make the most sense.

What you are wanting to do to keep from using three plan files which is easy to do with a save as is not working because you are working against the way chief was designed to be most effective/efficient at which is using live views for details/plan views.  Consider the very experienced users on this threads advice to just use three plan files for the foundation view at least.

    Hi All

Don't know if I am missing something vital here but why is it that when I connect a second light switch to a lighting circuit it shows up as a Three Way switch. Logic suggests that if I can switch a light from one of two locations it should be marked as a two way switch.

    Thanks for your help

    Elgreco

That is the definition of a three way switched circuit.  When you have two switches either switch will turn it on or off but they will be opposite of each other every time it is switched.

Guys, this is unique and I am wondering how this can be rectified and not look ugly. Can the builder construct some sort of roof cricket here for shedding water?

Can you just bring the large gable all the way and have a nested double gable on the end?

My plan file is getting about a 20-30 second lag when given a command.  If I add a dimension or move the dimension line it takes 20-30 seconds to populate.  All other programs are running fine even the layout file is working fine.  I've closed down all the layers other than the one I'm working on and still giving me a fit.

So MANY variables in that question.  Impossible not to answer without a copy of your plan and your computer and software specifications.  You can help us all help you by adding that info in your forum signature line in case it is a hardware or known software issue.

    Common issues that cause lag:

    Imported Library items/symbols

Quantity of 3d symbols in the plan

Size of terrain and other issues

    Autoframing on large plans

    Framing labels on large plans

Having the 3d model a long distance from 0,0 point in the plan file.

and on and on.  Share your plan file and someone may be able to help you with the issue.

    Hi all-

I am a general contractor based in coastal sonoma county california. We are chief users but looking for a subcontracted chief expert we can call on from time to time to help expedite our design build process. We'd like to periodically subcontract to someone to help speed up as built and proposed plans, make revisions, etc.  I typically do this myself but am looking into having a ghost drafstmen we work with behind the scenes to get these things rolling along a bit faster. The plan sets would have our GC name on them but we'd employ a subcontracted draftsmen to do the heavy lifting.

California based and understanding of CA code and permit requirements would be a plus. High energy efficiency, passive house design, building science savvy-even more of a plus. We are mostly working with more creative, high end finishes and design so we need to be able to create simple, clean, modern looking plan sets for our design build work.

Please respond or send us an email introducing yourself if this seems like a potentially good fit.

I collaborate regularly with some of the top Chief users in California doing exactly this.  I sent you an email.

I have created a custom wall out of a 3d solid and want to place "wall mounted" outlets on it.

For it to show up in the electrical schedule as wall mounted it needs to be placed in a "wall", not a 3d solid.

Ultimately the question is.....How do you put a wall mounted outlet on a 3d solid (without using invisible fake walls) ?

Anyone have a work around for this?

    Thanks,

    Charles

Why would you make a wall out of solids?

you can change them to fooor mounted and change the offsets.

Codes require the adjustable part to be welded or cover the threads with concrete after installation.

Down is the correct orientation with the threads below the slab. If you were jacking/leveling for a reno would be a different?

Interesting do you have the code reference for that?
