I'm trying to puzzle out why the 3d interior camera view will not show the "poles" (posts) except in 3d framing view?

My wall type has nothing on the interior surface, how can I get the inside 3d view to look more like the framing view?

    Frame your walls.

I have decks on level 1 and on level 2, one over the other. The plan view and 3Ds are all displaying correctly. However when I open the framing set both decks are displaying on level 1.

    The Barn.zip 9.08 MB · 0 downloads

1.) You haven't built a foundation level yet so no way to show the framing for the level 1 deck

2.) You have auto framing turned off for that deck.

3.) How do you propose to drive a car across the deck to access your garage?

One other Option is Canvas, if you have an iPad with Lidar ( newer models ) it has its limitations as well but the Canvas Measurement Report (CMR) can be useful on Smaller Projects ( I no longer recommend their Chief output as it is based on X12 only )  it's there PDF of all the Room, Window and Doors Sizes ( get Onsite dims to Confirm while there )  though you still need to make sure you get Ceiling Hgts, and any changes in Elevations, ie step ups/downs and at ALL Stairs ( no# of Risers and Tread Depths are important ).

FWIW I have found matterport to be a lot more accurate than canvas.

The full Matterpak will not help you as CA can not read the point cloud in the same way Revit can. The floor plan that then give you can be useful but the accuracy is to about 1-2". If you have critical dimensions, I would take those on site. This is based on my owning a Matterport camera and doing multiple scans of spaces.

Even though it will not help you with the model creation itself it will be able to be imported as a symbol where you can size it based off of a known dimension and have a full 3d symbol.  You can use the slider to cut from the top and get a floor plan you can trace over.  You can also use the matterport online model to take measurements to help with your window/door sizes/placements, heights, etc.

Frame the openings with no header, and in the framing above, whether roof or floor, edit the end joist or rim arrangement to get the beef you need.  Or use steel.

I do it auto and then manually adjust the header size as its just to change the depth and the framing around it.

The skylights in X15 are great and I've been using them as solar panels as they show up dimensionally correct on the roof but they cut the hole in the roof.  Is there a way to turn off the skylight from cutting the hole in the roof when using them as solar panels?

Any reason not to use the actual solar panel symbols in the bonus catalog instead?

    Hi everyone!

I have been using canvas for a while, and recently I have noticed that my files that I receive from CANVAS no longer allow me to swap my exterior walls to Concrete Block, an obvious need for us here in Florida. Has anyone else experienced AND solved this?

I attached two different screenshots. One shows a file that was imported from the canvas scan, the other is a simple quick "box" and its pretty clear to see the available options are much larger for the file I created.

    Thanks in advance!

You got a different drafter that did the conversion for your .plan file.  Their template does not have that wall type in their template.  My experience is their templates are horrible and from X12 at best so IMHO best practice is to Edit all area and copy and paste the model into your own template.

Plenty of residential designs have this arrangement.  A one-story arrangement, flat ceilings in the side wings where beds and baths and laundry and whatnot go, and a tall vaulted ceiling over the open-plan where kitchen dining living entertaining happens.  See the section here.  The entire roof is bearing on 9 foot walls, and the vault is handled with scissors trusses.

    1896875844_Screenshot2023-08-11081205.thumb.png.fe31f493e5b24bb0813ee6a8bf2a51be.png

For purposes of drawing the roof planes, and generating truss envelopes in the flat-ceiling areas, the 9-foot wall (room) height is proper, but my tiny little issue is in the center bay when drawing the upper windows in the gables.  In the pic you can see where the 9/0 elevation intersects all those upper windows, the side traps, and the lowers of the center group.  That means the windows have elevation specs for their bottoms and tops relating to a second floor which is not there.  Elevations like -11 1/2" at the window bottoms.

Is it best practice to draw a second floor and specify the center bay with the ceiling vault as open below?  Doing this has no effect on the model, as it is all roofed as needed, and windows are all placed where wanted.  Con docs can roll out just fine.  Framing elevations will be done to specify how the openings are framed, so windows get installed per the design.

But I was thinking, is open below any kind of aid for doing the modeling?  To place and size the uppers, I took sections like shown here, used CAD to define the shapes, and placed windows snapping to the CAD, and using measurements from CAD lines to modify the "arch" shapes with tops parallel to ceiling.  The windows are right there where they belong, but open one, and the elevations for sill and head look hinky.

Place the windows on floor 1 and change the elevations then place them.  Set wall to balloon frame and you are good to go.  No need to go to 2nd floor.

Hi everyone! My name is Candi Payne. I'm not sure if this is the best place for this, but I will try.

Are there any firms, designers, or architects in the Atlanta area, that use this software, open to an Interior Design student as an Intern?  I am currently in my senior year at Georgia State University, and unfortunately, my professors do not enjoy that I use Chief Architect for most of my design work. I was already working with it before I started the program, and I woud like to become extremely efficient with it. This year, we must do an internship.  I would like to work with a company that uses Chief a good amount, so that I can not only learn more, but also ne an assest while I'm with them.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be helpful!

    Thank you!

Whether that tight or something else, you're going to do sawcuts to control the eventual cracking.

This is highly debatable and most of the true pro concrete guys will tell you not to score an interior slab if monopoured with the footings as it is unnecessary and can even weaken the overall foundation slab.

  11. Remember your mud sill is considered part of foundation walls if you have them set as foundation walls.  If that window is in that 1 1/2” mud sill area it will show as cut wall.  What happens if you make the window six inches shorter (higher). Another option if this is the case is add another layer before for your “foundation” with a 4” high height and setting the supply room above floor.  Then not setting these walls as foundation on your new level 1.

I've done them like this in the past using solids. I used this method after watching one of @Renerabbitt's videos on youtube. So....I'm going to blame him for the batts running up so high. :) Thanks.

No issue with the material regions.  And using solids is a nightmare as you have to manually adjust all of them where as a material region will auto cut around festerations and doors.  It is a glitch that should be reported but as mentioned if you move it to the second level it goes away.  Please report the issue to chief so they can fix the bug.

Just add the custom fields.  Then when you've selected the desired cabinets you can enter the text you want in the correct custom fields to show up in the Schedule.

Just to add you can use macros in those custom fields to report info directly as well.  Sounds like you would really benefit from using @Renerabbitt's template plan He has a pretty comprehensive schedule system with lots of information that would be automatic for what you need here.

I made the mistake of starting a new job using the wrong template file, got way into it with the modeling, i.e. building, and realized I was missing a lot of things I wanted.  So I did an edit all area all floors and copied the plan, then pasted it into my preferred template file.

The terrain and elevation data did not copy in.

    What am I missing?

It will come over as a polyline you can then convert to a terrain perimeter.

I am not sure why I can't get my foundation heights and interior ledge to show properly. I have 'hang floor platform above on wall' checked in the foundation wall defaults and I've also checked it in each of the individual wall specs as well as 'include ledger'. I am wanting an 11ft high stem wall. Also, in the room spec structure tab I cannot get the section to appear properly. I'm not sure why it is not working for me this time. Any thoughts?

Will need a little cleanup in the cad detailing of your cross sections but if you use a "partition wall" for your ledge and offset your footings you can get this to build correctly.

Setup the exterior wall to hang floor platform from it.

    Hi All,

I am trying to model a "net" like texture in Chief, similar to the one on the picture attached to the stair.

I am kind of lost how to get on with it.

    Any suggestion?

    Thank you for any advice!

Depending on the level of rendering you need, the wire mesh texture in the core library may work for you.

    Hi All,

I'm a windows 10 user on my desktop and trying to convert myself to my new MBP - challenging..

I can't get enough speed out of my apple magic mouse to match my Razer Abyssus on my desktop.

What do other MBP M2 users out there chase their screen pointer with? And are you happy with the speed?

You can change the speed in your configurations.
