This forum is a great resource for sure. Try searching previous threads for info before posting a topic that may have been covered previously. More often than not you will find the answer in much less time than it takes to Q&A back and forth here.

You will need to delete the joists you have already drawn. Then place the direction line and auto build. This is a method I use often and then edit manually to dial it in. Once you have it as you want, lock the layer and you are set.

Don't sweat it too much Nate- DJP may just be having a rough day. Keep the posts coming- it's how this forum continues to be the great resource that it is.- 12 replies

Shed Roof Laying On Top of Gable Roof - Framing/Materials
RL-inc replied to wnschoen's topic in General Q & A
From a practical application standpoint it will obviously be constructed as the OP has shown in the 2nd view with the main plane extending down to the wall line. Overfaming sheds or valleys is a very common practice that I often edit manually in CA to get the final look into want. I am guessing most other users do as well. I don't know that I would ever find the need to do a whole lot more than edit the framing and confirm the roofing manualy. Perhaps in the future we could have the option to adjust individual layers of the roof structure by creating partial breaks or in section?- 12 replies

If it still does not appear run a plan check and that should bring it back.

Controlling Roof Pitch when intersecting walls are both "Full Gable"
RL-inc replied to CareySystems's topic in General Q & A
Agreed with Eric above- not sure whato you're after. -
I do as Perry does. I lay out all the framing pages and discuss how I see the structural details coming together and then my engineer goes through it all and sends back red-lines withe lateral and gravity info. I transpose the info and then he back checks. Stamped calc packet and submit.

Tim, Following along with what Joe said, CA uses ceiling and floor heights as a large part of how it developes the model you are creating. Even small changes to ceiling heights can have a big effect on the areas above. Try and consider the real world application of how raising that lid will work with the floor above and it will help you understand the way CA sees the model.

There are lights in the library that are designed for under mount application depending on what version you are using. Good idea to add a signature with your version and some more detailed info about yourself. You will get many more responses.

Been using since X9 and have never tried that. Be one of the first things I try on Monday. Learn something new every day. Much thanks.

I am not at my computer to open the plan but this seems like a very complex roof to try and auto build for a new user. (Really a complex roof to auto build for an experienced user.) CA won't auto build different roof pitches- that must be done manually. As far as the roof areas you did not want, the generation of those is controlled by the room structure that they are associated with. You may want to look into the training videos and start playing with some simple models and manually editing- creating roof planes.

Elevation line weights are light when sent to print to pdf.

Glad I could help. -
Agree with Gene - might want to slip the tile block next time

Check to see that you are sending to layout as plot lines. Good looking plan btw. -
Just curious, how do you propose that it would actually be built in the real world. 1/16" walls don't hold together very well. It seems that the walls would need to be a minimum of 2x4 for proper corner nailing. Same with the sill plates so they could be nailed to roof blocking below. I would probably sheath the inside of the framing and paint it black prior to installing the windows. This hides the framing members from view when the sun shines through and will give lateral support.

Sorry if I'm not fully getting this but can't you just take the camera view from 90 degrees off the plan?

Well said Ridge- Welcome Rob- good to have some more field construction experience to draw on here. The pictures of the existing structure you posted were very helpful in clarifying what you were after.s Great vid Scott- looks like Rob can get what he wants and just keep "corner post " checked in the framing DBX

Eric's way certainly seems to be the better method. I'll give it a shot on my next one.

Poly-line solids are a geometric shape that have depth in the X,Y and Z axis. An incredibly valuable tool as you develop your CA use. You can use multiple pline solids to create symbols or add to existing ones. Unique symbol creation or customizing existing arch-blocks is a real strength of CA IMO. Look into the training videos or do a search.
-
In the past I have exploded the dormer and then put the components on a new layer, then turn that layer off in plan view.
-
May have to use pline solids and create a symbol. Not wanting to jump too far ahead but before I spent a ton of time trying to create it in CA I would find out how much it is goung to cost to build. From engineering the wall to manufacturing that unit it looks like a pretty spend proposition to me.

Excellent work Graham. That's the kind of stuff that sells!
-
Yah, That can be the danger of getting too involved. Fortunately I have not run into very much of that. Most of my clients are wanting to get their projects started and move along quickly with the bigger decisions and don't get wrapped up in the little things.

Makes sense to me Lew. I use interior renderings to sell or get sign off on kitchen remodels and the like. Really helps with eliminating any miscommunication . The attached was a sign off for a Jen-aire kitchen that we did for a regional appliance retailer. Sold that and 4 more kitchenette remodels for additional manufacturers.
