I think you are referring to individual job files names. One way to do it, is to have the most current plan named as (example) Smith Current.plan Then if you have revisions, you start doing a save as numbering, so you would have Smith 01.plan, Smith 02.plan etc. but Smith Current is the one that is always the working model, that way, your layout files wouldnt have to be redone.

I agree with Joey, you need to figure out a win-win scenario. Why not ask the builder what he thinks is fair? He may surprise you.

It sounds a little more complicated than it actually is, but I agree, it could be easier. I had to go through it a couple of times before I really felt comfortable with it.

I had a similar decision to make and decided a new computer was the best option. While upgrading memory, hard drives, and video cards will get you some nice gains, its still an older computer with a likelihood of another part failing (motherboard, power supply etc), then what? Assuming this is how you make your living, the prudent option is to plan on replacing your hardware every 3-4 years or so. You might be able to extend that with periodic, specific upgrades, but I wouldn't go past 5-6 years, I think you are asking for trouble if you do.
