Thanks Joe. That works almost perfectly. It puts square brackets around the size though ( [2/6] instead of 2/6 ). What is causing this?

I have a custom macro for door widths where the feet and inches are separated by a slash (e.g.: 2/6). I'd like for this macro to recognize when I put in a double door and note it as 'DBL', plus the width of each leaf (e.g.: DBL 2/6) instead of the full door width. This is the macro I currently have: arr = width.round.divmod(12) "#{arr[0]}/#{arr[1].round}" Can one of the macro gurus guide me in creating this new macro? I know the macro needs to check the is_double_door variable and then divide the size by 2 if it is in fact double. I'm trying to learn Ruby, but I'm limited on time right now. I tried this: dbl = is_double_door size1 = width.round.divmod(12) "#{size1[0]}/#{size1[1].round}" size2 = width.round.divmod(12) "#{size2[0]}/#{size2[1].round}" case when dbl = true result = "DBL #{size1}" else result = size2 end result This results in the label showing DBL whether it actually is a double door or not. Plus, it formats the width as [2, 6] instead of 2/6. And I'm not sure what to do to divide the width by 2. I tried sticking in /2 in a few different spots in the 'size1' variable, but it just results in an evaluation error.

It's only disabled because it's a single window. Change the type to a double casement or triple casement and it will be enabled. The reason it's like that is because in a single window the component width is the width of the window...

I haven't watched David's video to see what his ways are, but I've accomplished this in the past by creating a room with invisible walls on the floor above and making this "room" open to below.

I found this bug last week and reported it.

One tip I would add is to place (and save) your camera view(s) in the first elevation, BEFORE doing a save as. This way, you can have the exact same camera angle(s) in all the alternate elevations. Unfortunately, we can't copy and paste cameras from one plan to another and just applying the same numbers in the camera dbx doesn't always work if you've zoomed in with your mouse.

I remember reporting a similar issue to Tech Support early last year. It was fixed in one of the updates I thought. I haven't had that problem since anyway!
-
Interesting... I don't see it there anymore either. Hopefully, like you said, they pulled it to fix it!

I noticed that too Sherry. All the Hardie materials (the ones I've tried so far anyway) seem to only have the texture set, not an accompanying hatch/fill pattern. You can add a pattern yourself though. Just edit the material. That'll work for that particular plan, but unfortunately, it won't change the one in the library. On a related note, do you find the colours look accurate? I find they look a bit off, especially the shingle textures. Maybe too much reflection in the texture images or something. I don't know. Could be me though!

That's what I started doing when the pdf's became too large to email. That is still a problem with the Mac version. I just email my clients Dropbox links now. They don't need Dropbox on their end to download and view the files.

I don't share files between Mac and PC, so I'm not sure if there are specific fonts that work better as far as that is concerned. I just remember when I switched to the Mac version, I had to fix a lot of text boxes in my active plans at the time. I use Arial Narrow as my main font, and even though it's available on both PC and Mac, they're a bit different. I had text boxes that were all on one line on the PC version that were on two lines when I opened the plan on the Mac (the ones that I had unchecked 'Auto width'). As for the Thunderbolt display, that would just be for secondary monitors, unless you go with a Mac Pro tower. The iMacs are all-in-ones. I'm pretty sure you can hook up other brands of extra monitors too... I was just pointing out that the options are limited and pricy if you want to stick to the APPLE brand.

I've been using Chief on my Macs (Macbook Pro and iMac) since they released the Mac version (actually I ran it via Bootcamp before that). No real pros for me Chief-wise other than it runs well on my machines. I just prefer the Macs for other stuff, among other things: free app and OS upgrades, iCloud and Dropbox syncing work really well, good photo and pdf editing without extra software, cheaper than MS Office for their word processor, spreadsheets, etc. A few cons: - Multiple monitors... if you want an Apple extra monitor, the only option is a Thunderbolt display. I don't think they've released a new model in a few years now... and it's fairly pricy. - Limited customization options... when you order/build your machine, you're limited in the stuff you can upgrade (hard drive, graphics card, etc.). The options they have are decent. If you want to go completely custom, the Mac Pro is an option, but mega bucks compared to a PC. The only other thing I'd mention is if you're gonna be sharing plan files between a Mac and a PC, there can be font and text wrapping differences, even if the fonts are available on both Mac and PC.

I understand that and I'm not trying to give it two orders. Since the wall will actually occupy space on the second floor (e.g: if I take a horizontal section at 4ft above the second floor subfloor, the wall will be there), I was wondering if there was way to show it that way without resorting to 2D cad. The second floor plan looks odd without that wall there and I'm sure the contractor and framer will think that too.
-
Filleting the corner this way just moves the corner handle 12" each way, which is why you get the 3'-5" radius. Not saying it's right. Just explains the results you're seeing. It would be nice if we could assign a hotkey for fillet radius, as you mentioned Scott.

What is the best way to set/show multiple story walls in a plan? I have this wall in my plan that will span across two floors plus a cathedral ceiling. I want it to show and frame as a single wall, which I believe I've accomplished using the 'balloon through floor above' checkbox. However, since I did that, the wall no longer shows up on the second floor where I had a room defined as 'open below'. Is there a way to have both a single framed wall and show on both floors? I was thinking maybe putting that wall on a unique layer and creating a ref set might be one option. And then just add a text box to replicate the 'open below' room label... just curious if there's any other methods/ideas.

Use the point-to-point tool or the tranform-replicate tool to move your roof plane (not just the baseline) and it should keep all parameters the same. Joe is right that you can't just drag the baseline.
-
That's what was happening to me, so that's why I ended up replacing the ceiling planes with roof planes.

I had tried that but the rafters were picking up the roof slope (4:12) as opposed to the ceiling slope (2:12)...

I ended up doing a slight variation of your suggestion. I locked the truss envelope and replaced the ceiling planes with another set of roof planes at the same slope as the underside of the trusses (ceiling surface, fascia, etc. turned off). Then I used roof beams and they followed the lower roof planes. Soffits work...sorta... I kept getting an error message that it couldn't find a ceiling plane above??? I got it to work by checking sloped soffit instead and figuring out my heights in a cross-section view. Still, after doing all that, that method is no better than polyline solids... the orientation of the wood grain was wrong too.

Is there a framing member type/setting that I'm missing here? I'm trying to put in beams to follow the ceiling (underside of scissor trusses). These would just be decorative. I've tried all the different types of framing members but I can't seem to find one that'll follow the ceiling. The closest I can get is using Polyline Solids, but the wood grain goes in the wrong direction, so I'd have to explode them and create copies of the material at different angles...

Line showing through exterior in elevation view.
LevisL replied to HaywardVT's topic in General Q & A
I see lines like that from time to time on my plans, even when the walls are perfectly aligned. I think there might be a bug there. Sometimes just selecting the wall and opening the dbx and closing it will make the unwanted line go away, sometimes not. Very hit and miss. And sometimes the line is there in vector view, but when you send the view to layout, it goes away. When it doesn't, I usually just end up using 'Edit Layout Lines' to delete it. -
Perfect. Thank you! I was just selecting the 'Inserts in Terrain Hole' radio button. I guess that's why it wasn't working for me.
-
Nice! I had just created my own corrugated well symbol the other day, but I will use these instead. In the one I created, I was frustrated at how the terrain hole was rectangular even though my well had rounded corners... Any secret to getting the terrain hole to follow the shape of the symbol?
-
How so? I tried. You need the same number of materials whether it's a symbol or not. And making a symbol of a complex timber truss and stretching it 2ft... depending on the specific configuration, you might be lucky and be able to use stretch planes, but that doesn't always work. Something's gonna look distorted.
