Splitting up Plan files, then rejoining when done?

I've run into this many times, as I'm sure others have, but in my haste I have not learned the best way to work on a project that has more than one building on site.

In this case I've got an existing CA file from a great client who wants to build a detached shop.  I love showing how the two buildings will interact, but it is a *&% bear to work with both in the same plan file.

What have others here figure out in terms of working on the 3d model, getting it just right then merging it back to the main plan file? How is that best accomplished??

Hey John,

I've had similar situations, and if your not going to be doing anything to the main residence, I'd make the house a symbol.   Basically copy the house file and delete all you can to make the file smaller, for example, I deleted furniture, interior lights, etc..  Then edit areas all floors, and make a block per say.  It will take a minute or two, to convert depending on the PC and the size of the home.  Then on your garage plan, you insert as a block.. position accordingly.

You don't actually need to merge them, set up a reference view that links to the plan file for the other building, set the view style for that reference file using the same camera options, (or different depending on what you are doing.  You can offset the origin of the reference file for x, y and z to place in the right relationship and then it would seem that the reference model is in the same plan.  They maintain their independence and minimize the file size for the building of interest.

Pot Line View is not supported for this -- at least in X16.  I came across this limitation when I set up a reference view of multiple buildings on a site plan.

just send the view as a stacked view, you dont technically need to ever send a plan with a reference view. you can always just stack views in layout if you prefer
