banelinde
Hi there, I have created a spline and converted it to 3D molding polyline. How can I create and later edit/move spline points into third Z axis ? Regards.
Chopsaw
You need to create an elevation view to work in the Z axis.
banelinde
Hi, have done, but this is no-go. You can START crating spline in elevation, but you can not see it in plan view. So you have curvature in Z and X axis, but no Y. When you convert spline to molding, you then loos ability to edit it. And when you convert it back to polyline, you can edit in X and Y in plan view, but not in Z axis. Hmm!?

Sorry my comment continues on from what you have shown in your screen shot. Create in plan view then edit the Z components in elevation view. TeaTime
Feels like there's some missing steps/info here -- splines lose their their curves when converted to 3D Moldings. 2D Molding Polylines remain splines though, so you'll probably have to mix and match 2d and 3d moldings to achieve what it seems you're looking for. The only tip I can provide with 3D Moldings is to try to come at them from a variety of angles, try a few different elevation views. Theyre squirrely in the most simple situations, so I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor!
Renerabbitt
it so difficult to use moldings for this, youre better off opening a new file and generating a terrain and then using a railing that follows terrain with nothing but a round cap and then converting that to a symbol..or just use blender or sketchup..would take two seconds in those apps..you'll be fighting this in chief, doable, but annoying
banelinde
Hi guys. Many thanks. What you are saying, I concluded also on my side, that for me , 3DS max is the solution. Cheers.
glennw
It is doable in Chief, but you need to follow the rules. Set up your plan and elevation cameras and tile the views. Draw your polyline one section at a time and adjust it's height and direction as you add more sections to the polyline. Don't try and convert a multipart polyline to a molding polyline and then try to edit the various parts of the polyline - you will find that very difficult. Each time you want to add another section to the polyline, change to an elevation view that is perpendicular to the angle of the new polyline. banelinde
Hi Glenn, am I missing something ? Polyline is NOT visible for me in any elevation view. As it is line, it has no thikness, so it cant be seen when I look it at a perpedincular angle. I also prefer splines to have smooth curvature. Please point each step where and what to call in. Many thanks.
glennw
What version of Chief are you using? Assuming X15. I usually draw a wall or some other object as a reference plane. Draw a single 3D Molding Line line in plan and open it's dbx. Edit the molding shape, size, material, etc. You should now see the molding line in 3D views. You can change straight lines to curves and adjust their shape. Now you can add another section of your 3D Molding Polyline. Do this in an elevation view and drag the new line of the existing one. Continue changing views and editing as required.
