Dimensioning

I drawn everything to a resolution of a 1/16".

 

I then go back and try to round off and get rid of most of the fractions.

Should I just change the dimension default that I used from smallest fraction of 1/16 to 1/4 inch.

Recommendations.

It's rare in construction that anything is built closer than 1/8".  But for certain details you might need the smaller fractions. 

 

My recommendation would be to create the model accurately and have the Dimension Defaults set to the accuracy needed for the scale and the drawing type as needed/appropriate.

I also use 1/4" and also set my snap grid to 1/4", things for me go well.

Be precise in your model. Using the rounding for dimensions to hide sloppy work is more work in the long run. If you want a model accurate to 1/8" then set your dimensions to be at 1/16" and adjust the model so that you don't see any 1/16" dimensions.

This is what I do. However if you have angled walls, there is a good chance that you'll sometimes have 1/16" dimensions at those walls. That is about the only time I'll round it off to 1/8" for those angled dimensions only.

I don't know what kind of construction expertise you guys have in your area, but the local framers around here have a hard enough time reading the whole numbers on a tape measure, much less than understanding what those little ticks and lines between the numbers mean.
