roof pitch question

Recommended Posts

Hi! Very new to CA and I am finishing up my 2nd plan.  I had Chief draw the roofline of a complicated layout and I was able to make most of my changes successfully; however, I don't want every section of this roof to be 9/12. When I try to manually change the sections that I want to be 12/12, for example, the roof becomes de-segmented. There must be a way to do this as roof lines are not always one pitch.  Any help is appreciated!!

Are you joining the disconnected edges after changing the pitch? Chief does not do this automatically.

There are videos available on the Chief site and from both users and Chief on YouTube.

Also a good idea to fill out your signature (see mine for an example) by clicking on your user name at the top right of the page, click Account Settings, then Signature on the left.

No I'm not...I didn't see that they were disjointed until I looked at the 3D, but I will try it.  Thanks so much!!

There is a tool to do this -- don't try to just drag them together.

With one roof plane selected, check in the Edit Tool Bar for the Join Roof Planes tool, or use the 2 key (shortcut).

Also, if Auto Rebuild Roofs is active, the pitch of an individual roof plane can be changed within the wall specification dialog box associated with that plane, and Chief will automatically keep the edges of the differently pitched planes together.

After Auto Rebuild Roofs is deactivated the pitch can still be changed this way but it won't change the model until Auto Rebuild is reactivated, at which time any manual edits are lost.

Ok, I will try that as well.  I am making a pure mess of this roof.  Thank you!!!!

The "problem" with Auto Rebuild Roofs and Auto Rebuild anything is that making manual edits requires turning off the auto function, and you can't turn it back on without losing the edits.

Chief teaches you to approach disabling Auto Rebuild with much grave consideration. :D

Good luck!

 That's what these are for...

I think I'm getting somewhere by using the walls to edit the roof.  Thank you both so much!

On a complex roof, it is often faster to do it all manually.

this is up for debate ...

first let me state that I don't do roofs, other than very simple ones

anything beyond that I send to my friend/partner

In the Chief Intermediary class the instructor stated and demonstrated that even very complex roofs can be

done via the autobuild

Chief recommends starting auto then going manual - "as necessary"

others recommend starting manual and staying manual

We're trying to figure out how to change the angle of pendent lights on vaulted ceilings. When we create the ceiling angle, the lights follow and aren't angled properly. How do we change the lights so they go vertical rather than at a tilt?

      Hi,
I am using Chief Architect X8 on a Mac.
I am having trouble with roof planes - I want to be able to change the baseline height but it keeps defaulting back and won't alter.
Yet when I open the same file on another computer I can change it
      Any suggestions?

      Thanks

Hello, I’m needing help lowering the roof. I’m trying to make a 50x80x16 shop with the pitch lower than the default gable height. I’m new to this and I’m hoping this software will help build our dreams on our farm. I want the look of the attached photo with the front being the 80 ft side.

How do I put a roof return on this roof? Can't find a video about it anywhere on the Chief Website... is there another name for it?

See attachment, and where I drew in black.
