  1. I believe CA's intent is layersets control "what" is displayed anno-sets control "how" it's displayed 1:1 ratio may be needed but I'm hoping not at least for the average user Lew
  2. my rain gutter notes are going to be on that drawing in layout and I will not have a stray arrow pointing to a downspout show up on my electrical plan or site plan or hvac plan or.... Alan: just curious wouldn't the layerset control which layers are showing ??? this is how I do it now and in the past - since I'm not using anno-sets Lew
  3. some jurisdictions require ice and water shield for any pitch for the first 6' on my new addition we did the shield for the entire roof it had 6:12 pitch but was small enough roof area that 6' up from eves just about got to ridge anyways I live in the Buffalo NY area but we also did shield on my house in VA for first 6' Lew
  4. considered the best method Larry: sorry, I wasn't thinking "best" I'm trying to understand why sometimes "extra" is "simpler" to use Joe and Scott need what they need and it's best for them it's not a one-size fits all Lew
  5. Larry: I get that a Layerset controls "what" is shown anno-sets control "how" it is shown thus, many layersets can use the same anno-set it is also possible to have many anno-sets be set to use the same layerset it doesn't have to be a one-to-one relationship its important to have the needed layersets having too many anno-sets can be "overkill" Lew
  6. I always recommend that the first model should be your own house/apt or use a family member or friends place doing a real world project that you have constant access to can make for an incredibly fast learning curve learning features in isolation of an actual project is good but just not as fast Lew
  7. Larry: thanks for posting trying to learn - why would you need a different set for raingutters ? what would be different from the other anno sets ??? what's different among the various framing anno-sets ??? Lew
  8. Just curious how many anno-sets are being used I haven't had a need for them but I think I would use the OOB anno-sets and maybe a few customized ones - maybe a total of 12 Lew
  9. I've named and cutomized around 20 different Anno Sets Larry: I'm trying to learn can you share your 20 anno-sets ??? Lew
  10. Robert: if those various 1/4 views/details use different "grouped defaults" then you would need an anno-set for each one that is different for views/details that use the same "grouped defaults" they can share the same anno-set watch CA's video's #1305 and #1306 some users may need more - others can use what CA provides OOB it's not a one-size fits all What works for Joe and Scott and other "power-users" may not be needed for some (like me) I can see a newbie suffering "brain-melt" trying to understand/implement "power-user" anno-sets when all they need is a basic set Lew
  11. Larry: select the 1/4" anno-set and have "use active layerset" specified then change the layerset on the toolbar as needed and each chosen layerset will use the 1/4" anno-set a basic/standard user probably won't have need for more than the anno-sets provided by CA OOB the "power-users" need what they need Lew
  12. Hmmm, we did our first remodel project using Chief 9.5 and while learning Chief completed the model and basic plan set in weeks (< 30 days) this was an 1880's house with 3 floors completely gutted and re-done then sold for $750,000 we did a permit set rather than full-blown CD's that was all the Wash DC planning dept needed CA used to have a 90-day money back guarantee but changed it to 30 day as too many users were completing their projects and then returning the software for a refund Lew
  13. Jim: I'm retired and don't do CD's anymore my friend/partner is still doing some projects mainly 3D elevations and roof fixes he doesn't use anno-sets either just trying to get a handle on them - in case the need arises I see all the "confusion" and decided to go back to CA's original intent which seems to be missing from all the discussion and debate on these posts I'm sure new users are reading these posts and deciding anno-sets are way too confusing and avoiding them like the plague If my understanding is correct they can be used in CA's "simple mode" without all the extra "hoopla" while "power users" may need more I suspect the average user can get along fine with the way CA intended them so I'm trying to understand what suggestions are improvements versus those that are complete "re-writes" of the original logic Lew
  14. which of course changes to the Layer set that is associated with the Anno Set Larry: could some of those anno-sets be specified as "use active layerset" ? then you could change the layerset as needed and be using the same anno-set' "grouped defaults" just asking - trying to get a handle on the "simple way' to use anno-sets have Anno Sets set per floor If you have a layerset per floor and some of the anno-sets have "use active layeset" then maybe that would work for you ? Lew
  15. for the non-power users of Anno-sets or those (like me) who haven't used them yet the SSA videos #1305 and #1306 are informative as to how CA thought they would be used my understanding is that CA sees anno-sets as "grouped defaults" which is quicker than going to the defaults dbx and changing any of the 6 defaults that can be controlled by anno-sets concerning the "king" question it seems CA intended for both options 1. choose a layerset, then choose an anno-set that has "use active layerset" and layersets are "king" just switch among the various layersets and the anno-set remains the same with the same "grouped defaults" useful when using the same scale for various layersets 2. choose an anno-set such as electrical or framing or site plan with a specific layerset specified with the "grouped defaults" and anno-set is "king" switch to another anno-set like this and the layerset is changed this is what CA implemented in X3 since then the power-users like Joe and Scott have devised vast new combinations of usage I think my needs would lean towards CA's original intent for anno-sets more power to those who have "greater" needs Lew
  16. Hmmm, Doug's concept of anno-sets doesn't match the methods being recommended https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?/topic/739-layer-set-and-anno-set-relationships/ POST #13, #26, #54 perhaps Joe or Scott should call Doug and have a conversation of how CA envisions anno-sets it would probably be best to ask Doug to explain CA's concept before getting into how to change that concept I suspect CA won't be in any hurry to get rid of them I'm feeling like a "Gumby" right now "MY BRAIN HURTS !!!" Lew
  17. Yes, you can delete them and open the old files in the newest version bringing "legacy" plans forward may have a few "issues" but some tweaks here/there usually fix them up you may find some materials/textures missing and can import them into X4 or just assign new materials if you know which plans you want to migrate forward then do that before deleting the older versions note: once a plan is saved in the newer format the older versions can't open them so make copies first as backups Lew
  18. if you have multiple computers and no WiFi, you probably aren't really in business Richard: not even close to being true .... Now adays most anyone has internet access unless you live out of town again, I would never ask a client to use their internet sorry, but It's hardware lock for me Lew
  19. So - go to client's house with laptop and use their wifi. (Or go to Starbucks for a couple of minutes.) Richard: Starbucks maybe - but I would never ask a client to use their network that even assumes they have one I don't have a network I really can' see a client being thrilled for me to ask if I can disconnect their PC and connect mine I also have concerns about CA disabling a software license whenever they decide to change policies and maybe make SSA mandatory etc my partner feels the same way we plan to always get hardware locks Lew
  20. Ummm, that all depends seriously, some climb the learning curve fairly easy and some never climb it your prior experience and ability to learn are big factors no one size fits all I'm sure you will get other opinions ranging from easy to hard you may want to contact CA's customer service to see what they recommend as they offer training also Lew
  21. As long as you have an internet connection Barton: there's the rub... I don't have a network at home so I would have to do the following: 1. deactivate desktop 2. unpack laptop, find desk space 3. disconnect internet from desktop, connect to laptop 4. after laptop boots - activate license 5. turn off laptop 6. disconnect internet from laptop, connect to desktop 7. pack up laptop 8. upon return from client reverse steps 1-7 I can also stop upgrading and continue to use Chief "forever" I see a day when CA may start "terminating" software licenses that are X versions old Lew
  22. I prefer the USB key doing the deactivate - activate dance seems very tedious to me Revit costs was more than $1200 - probably closer to $5000 or more range maybe you are referring to Revit lite ??? Chief also has a lite version and an Interiors version that sell for about half of what Chief Premier costs Lew
  23. CA products can't do plug-ins CA products don't have inter-operability using BIM even tho Chief is parametric Chief Premier has a very limited (lame) implementation of RUBY until RUBY can access ALL of Chief's "innards" ??? Lew
  24. Hmmm, you might need to contact CA's tech support on Monday they open 6 AM (-8 GMT) in general you need a video card with its own ram also needs to have OpenGL Lew
