I've used Chief's Box / Bay window tools and they work ok (sometimes) but I find them to be less flexible and more work to adjust the component settings than building a separate room where I can adjust the ceiling / floor finishes and heights manually. But I'm not sure I know anything about Chief that you don't. What do you use, and what aspect bothers you the most?

  5. I don't have that kind of authority! Plus, it never leaks in Chief! It sucks sometimes, but never leaks!
  6. I do this regularly and that's how things are usually built in my region. Waterproof decks covered with a vinyl deck membrane sloped at 1%-2% to the exterior with an aluminum railing installed on top of the decking surface. The railings are constant in height, so they follow the deck surface.
  7. Definitely depends on how much you print, and what you're paying! I'm lucky, for Arch D I can get BW prints for about $3 and color for less than $5.
  8. I always use a ramp for situation like this. Then, the railings on the side can be set to "follow stairs" and they'll nicely follow the ramp. Once the ramp's heights are set, I place it on it's own layer and lock it, so I can easily select other items. Tip: Set the deck / balcony room height based on the outer edge elevation.

  10. Print quality can vary significantly based on their settings. I use 2 print shops (depends on the client), one plac the prints are perfect as per the pdf, and the other shop prints everything way too dark. I've tried to work with them to get it right, and they can do it, but aren't willing to mess around with their settings. So experiment with various print shops, or if you always use one printshop, adjust your settings to suit the output. Handling your own printing is a great way to lose money! Unless you've got help to manage the ink, paper, collating, or can make some serious markup on the printing, the lost time and hassle will almost certainly drive you nuts, and reprinting when you find minor errors will cost. It's a great way to lower your quality of life!

  12. You need to break the sunroom into 2 separate rooms to allow for the 2 ceiling heights within that room. No extra rooms needed on the floor above the sunroom.
  13. You're right Rene, I could have explained my method in more detail. I do what Glenn mentioned when necessary. Sometime though, I'll just bury it, as shown in the pic below.
  14. Even easier IMO is a 3d molding line. 1 line only Vasily! Plus wood grain texture will follow it accurately. Spec layer, material. Or you could create a post, then convert it to a symbol, then rotate it in elevation view. This is more work, and the texture may need to be copied an rotated.
  15. I think the problem is there are no bikes in that garage and that makes it a sad place! For help with something like this, you need to post the plan, or at the very least, your Chief version, computer spec's and all the specifications of the lighting and camera and materials you are using.
  16. Is there a simple (automatic) way to show the widths for each size of a double or triple casement window that has uneven sizes?
  17. Currently there's no way to create 'smart' callouts that link to either a detail in layout, a layout box, or any specific view in the project browser. I'd happily settle for smart callouts that if placed in plan view could link to any view in the plan file, and if placed in layout, could link to any layout box, or view in the layout file. So far the best way to manage this is with fantastic laziness; don't include more than 2 sections, and no details whatsoever. Then, no spreadsheets are required to organize and callout your drawings!
  18. You certainly can add text to the label in the default settings. For a plan that already has doors placed, you can group select them to alter their labels. Labels in existing doors will not update to the default labels after the fact.
  19. Does the manufacturer not provide their own schedule with RO's listed? If so, I wouldn't place RO's in a window schedule, the supplier's spec's take precedence. Other than that, I believe your confusion may come from the fact that Chief adds the side RO to BOTH sides!

  22. Holy Cow! No doubt you're confused! Maybe delete 90% of those... At any rate your trouble is you have more than one type of dimension set to auto-refresh. I blame Ken Suffridge, a no-good trouble maker for sure!
  23. Have you adjusted the scale of your drawing sheet to coordinate the scale of the detail? The line weight will adjust according to the scale of the drawing sheet and many people don't bother to adjust this. In the screen shot, the heavy line is 1/4" scale drawing sheet, and the light line is 1 1/2" scale drawing sheet. It's the exact same line, with the exact same settings.
