Glenn did a great vid for me on this - will try to find.

OK, so you can add pattern fills to objects..? I notice its showing your cabinet with wood grain, so do cut fills just take the same properties as a normal fill?
-
Do you think we should be able to set a fill/hatch to diplay when a section is made, or have custom control over "auto-detail"? To me this seems like a no-brainer.
-
That is only the layout file...
-
Thanks guys - curious what a mask is though in sections...?
-
Is there a way to customize those settings? Say I had beam I wanted to show a wood grain pattern/hatch on - can I set the auto-detail to do that? Same thing for counters, cabinets, flooring etc etc...
-
Is there a way to set the section fill of an object (or sub-object) so when a section is cut you get a corresponding hatch/pattern that matches the type of material? This would sure speed up my work.

I'd like to know if what I am saying is correct or not. To me I see limited options when you try to control the railing thru the stair Dbx - whereas you have a lot more options to do paneling and other things with the custom railing tool. Can any of the examples above be replicated (not close, but actually replicated) through the stair Dbx? If so, id like to know so I stop using the extra steps.
-
Can you get those options on the stairs for more complex handrail details as the pictures show? I've only been able to use the custom handrail and even at that sometimes section it so there are multiple pieces which make up the overall composition i'm after.
-
1. Floor height - so long as both stairs have the same X/Y start coordinates you should be fine with varying floor levels. The stairs can have different run lengths. 2. You can make a custom handrail, which may be easier for this situation. There is an option for "follow stairs" which would work for stairs, and then a straight rail for the edge of the stair opening.
-
You will need 2 sets of stairs on different levels occupying the same X/Y space but different Z - which the stories will provide. Floor 0 or 1 will have stairs going up, and Floor 1 or 2 will have stairs going up, and floor 3 will have an "open to below" space in X/Y coordinate for head height etc. The stair examples are all different - which one do you want to replicate?
-
As Joey says what you are asking for can already be done. I too feel that the process of text/annotation sets is more complex than it needs to be, but not for the reason you mentioned. Once you learn how to setup your drawing files and keep using the same settings its not difficult at all. Checkout Wendy's recent vids of this - she really did a great job explaining it all.

I'm using a grey background in plan just to make it easier on my eyes. The problem is that i have shades of grey I use for certain things and it was hard to tell how dark the shades where relative to printing on a white sheet. Also, I appreciate your suggestion Glenn, but I actually had figured a way to go around this by placing a large white rectangle around the sheet on "0"...so every page looks correct to me and white doesn't print. Thanks again! (below is example).

In layout I would prefer to see a white background to represent a clean paper appearance - and better judge my print results from that screen. Can I set a difference layout background from the main app?

How to show floor material breaks and labels on plans automatically
johnny replied to Kenneth_Miller's topic in General Q & A
I may be wrong, but it appears the OP is looking for a graphical display for the transition point. If that is what you want, I doubt there is an automatic way to do this....but since its not a common practice to be on a floor plan, its probably going to just have to be done by hand. -
If this is the object - https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model.html?id=7dff3c7a06772d297264285e5245d342 Then I think this is mostly an image imported into sketchup - so its 3d properties exist mainly in sketchup. I think you'd be best off finding the image you want and import the image into CA. Otherwise, opening Sketchup and moving this around would be the 2nd option.

Thanks guys - ill try both methods.

I may have asked this before, but is there a way to constrain moving an object (drag/drop) freely expect for a X/Y/Z lock axis? As an example to be clear - Say I am moving an object that reaches a bump constraint, I press ctr to freely move but say I want to only move the object in a certain direction....is there a way I can lock that direction?
-
Since you brought it up, I'm finding many things that seem to behave oddly at the corners - even windows and doors. I often have to move the wall out in length, move my item, and move the wall back again. Whatever constraint that is would be nice to have it less an issue.
-
I have to say, the wall material region tool is very cool.

I buy dropbox by the year - as there is a very nice feature that you can "turn off" sharing and sync-ing of folders once you are "done" using them that no longer takes space on your HD. I've done nearly 500 homes now and can't keep everything on my current system or it would be ridiculous. I'm sure others have the same issue.

Can Auto Cad files used in conjunction with Chief?
johnny replied to freshrooms's topic in General Q & A
I agree with Michael. If your workflow was 1 way, as in from architect to you, or you to architect, CA option would be fine. However, you are talking architect to you and then back to architect - and that isn't going to work smoothly, since you will end up messing up his layer conventions, blocks, or another proprietary app data etc. Option - since you probably aren't messing with main files - would this work?: 1. Import DWG file from architect to CA 2. Make your additions to a customized and agreed layer combo 3. Export ONLY the layers you use and the architect agrees to letting you have in the plan file. 4. Architect imports only the layers designated but keeps the main file integrity the same. I kinda work this way in VW too - where I send to my engineer and he makes the additions/notes, on an agreed layer group and then I only import that 2D data into my file using those layers/classes. -
I have a text issue where i changed all my default text to something other than the Chief default text, yet the Chief text is still coming up as the selected default. Here are 2 screen shots showing I am trying to use a "rich text" and it having Chief text selected, yet if I follow that through to what text it should use the settings appear correct. Odd.

I have an issue where my counter-top that i used a fill for is covered my upper cabinets. I've tried to make the upper cabinet moved to front group but that doesn't change its display from being "behind" the custom counter. I'm using the counter-tops of my concept work - not wanting to mess with cabinets etc....except I do want to show some uppers for graphical display. Any help is appreciated. Peterson_res_concept.plan
