  1. Yeah, I've done that on occasion as well. Just don't do it enough.
  2. Yes, I too wish I was more diligent about updating my templates. I get caught in this same trap all the time too. Just get so busy and trying to get to the next project all the time.
  3. Interesting discussion, and not even hijacked! :-) I can't help but wonder if it is still too much to ask Chief to just interpolate this configuration correctly, or at least better, wedgie or no wedgie? I played around with this a bit in Sketchup, and it seemed to handle it a bit better. In the end, I just want the model to be good enough for condocs (which in this case might only involve a decent look in my elevations at 1/4" scale), not necessarily perfection at 1" scale or something?
  4. I played around with your plan, and have tried some of this kind of thing myself with no better results. Seems the program just doesn't interpolate the interface between the two properly. I would definitely send this in as a bug report since this really ought to be fixed. Can't much see the use for being able to manipulate molding polylines in 3D this way and not have them mesh properly. Probably a lot more math and computing power needed to accomplish it.
  5. You can just turn them on or off via the button in the attached screen capture. I can't remember if it comes this way OOB, or if you have to add the button to your toolbar manually.
  6. Isn't there a checkbox somewhere for Opaque Glass in Vector Views or something?
  7. Definitely send the plan into tech support.
  8. The only thing I have seen that is at all similar to this was using a custom window, but I think they fixed that. Do these lines show only when you recess the window? Anyway, I agree posting the plan might help.
  9. Yes, this is what annoys me most about thread hijacking. Great discussion, too bad no one will every be able to find it later.
  10. Thanks for the tip. Yeah, my library is pretty darned big too from years and years of adding to it. Sounds like manual sync-ing is the better way to go.
  11. Thanks Barton. So, If I do decide to put my X6 Data folder in my Google Drive Sync'd folder, I forget where you go to tell Chief where to look for that file up on opening. How is that done? Although we do obviously work with fairly large files, I don't find that it takes more than just a minute or two to have the Chief file update after closing. At least with my internet connection, it never seems to take as long as ten. I mean, it just updates the file, doesn't it? It doesn't re-save the whole thing every time?
  12. Okay, but how many of your projects actually involve out of plumb walls? Do you do those projects completely in another software?
  13. I think Joe Carrick does the same thing with his X6 Data folder. I may do the same since I did run into a bit of an issue with libraries not being sync'd between my desktop and laptop recently.
  14. I am also perfectly content with the 2D tools and support Chief's objective to keep working on the automatically generated 2D representations of the 3D model for working drawings rather than "fixing" the 2D. So much is said on this forum about "drafting" rather than designing in Chief. Ultimately I think the goal should be to completely automate the "drafting" portion (eliminating the drudgery and enhancing the creativity) of the process which gives clients more design. I have been using Chief for more than 15 years now and have never been shown any convincing evidence I should switch. The only meaningful limitation I can see right now in Chief is the lack of out of plumb walls, although unless you are Frank Gehry I don't think 90% of architects even need this (which can actually be done in Chief with a lot of extra effort for the relative few times you might need it).
  15. There are quite a few in the Chief Library. There are quite a few in the Sketchup 3D Warehouse online. You can make just about any kind of column you can imagine with molding polylines, polyline solids, etc. Adding them to the library can be done by making a block of these items, or taking a 3D view and going to Tools/Convert to Symbol and adding that to your library.
  16. 1. You may need to just re-build your framing to clear the old framing. If you don't have auto-framing checked then the old framing will remain even if you have redrawn the wall. 2. Sometimes I get roof framing showing through on an elevation camera, but it doesn't show when sent to layout. But, a plan, or at least a screen shot of what your issue is is always the best way to get a good answer.
  17. I have been using Google Drive for about a year now and work on the same files from different computers at different times with very few issues. The ability for multiple users to work on a Chief file at the same time is a limitation of Chief, it has nothing to do with Google Drive. The only issue I have had to watch out for is closing a Chief file and then trying to re-open it within the few minutes where Google Drive is automatically syncing it. Then I get an error message saying the file is locked, and have to restart my computer to clear the problem. I work around this by just pausing Google Drive while working in Chief, and un-pausing it when I am not. I try to make sure I at least un-pause it for a few minutes before I shut down for the day to make sure everything is sync'ed so that I can open the file from my laptop at home or on the road. The advantages far outweigh this minor issue.
  18. This reminds me of clients that leave these long-winded voice mails, or even e-mails, describing the design revisions they would like to see, consistently mis-using the few architectural terms in their vocabulary and making very little sense. There is a reason they say a picture says a thousand words, especially to graphically minded people. People are so afraid to send any kind of sketch or diagram to their architect because they "don't know how to draw", but most can say what they want to say with a 1/2" thick black marker on a small scale floor plan on 8.5x11 paper infinitely more clearly than they can describe it in words. Makes me nuts sometimes.
  19. I do all my standard closets 24" deep clear. That is basically adequate room for a standard shelf and pole and room to hang clothes and still have the a bi-pass door clear the hanging clothes. I think anything any deeper tends to just be wasted space. Not aware of any codes that require a minimum size.
  20. It's always been a problem for me ever since going the three monitors probably about three years ago now. I do believe the latest update made it worse. Before, it would only happen every 3rd or 4th time I opened Chief. Now it's very predictable.
  21. Thanks for this. I have used a couple of these myself from the Warehouse. Just eliminating the grills at the upper portion of some of them I have found reduces the face count considerably.
  22. It happens every time I close all files, and the library subsequently closes. I don't even have to close down Chief altogether. Happens every single time without fail.
  23. I have three monitors too and all those checked and it still wanders exactly as you describe, Dru. It's been like this for a long time. I have sent in bug reports about it. And the top border sometimes wanders up outside the screen view and you can't easily grab and move it back. Gets pretty old.
  24. This can all be done in Chief with a combination of polyline solids, molding polylines, and 3D molding polylines but it is fairly involved and complex and can hardly be shown and/or demonstrated to you in anything like a concise post on Chieftalk. It would take nearly as long to explain it as it would be to just do it, and it looks like you have very particular, idiosyncratic situations where two trim build-ups die into eachother, or die into wall intersections in unique and odd ways. Can you give a more clear example of your attempts in Chief so that someone might be more focused as to where, exactly, you need help? From just a basic design standpoint, I would suggest that the design of the doors and doorways themselves would be improved by changing their size and/or location so as not to have the trims dying into each other, or into walls in these idiosyncratic ways.
  25. Yep. Good to know. I will assume others are likely having issues with it, even in other softwares. Hopefully it will get fixed with the next driver update.
