Steve, Did you understand my suggestion or is there a reason it will not work for you. If you like I could take a look at your plan. It worked fine in my test plan but I don't know what you have above your windows. You may even be able to move them two floors up and bring them back with the elevation setting. It should give you exactly what you want.

Very nice CJ, And also a railing wall cap to go with. Great video by DSH in X3 and still a great one. We all keep learning workarounds. Maybe some day Chief will learn what we need. Thanks, Chop

I just was curious about the stairs but you just had them turned off. I fixed a few more things but ran out of time for now. It would be best just to look at the revised plan file as a reference and recreate it in your original file if you want to learn the most. LI 1930 Colonial House Closet fix by Chop (2).plan

Great, Thank you Eric. I think that was new with X8 and I forgot about it. Very helpful in this situation. That eliminates the need for the 3D molding for the door casing and jamb, as well as the Room molding polyline to compensate for the casing problem. Dave, I was curious how you did the stairs?
-
Eric, Very nice optional refinements. Please explain in more detail how this was done as it does not seem possible in X8 or 9. I think I have read requests for this feature but can't see how it is possible.

Dave, I think this should work for you. 2 Polyline solid fillers in doorway, Custom 3D molding polyline for door jamb and Casing, Molding Polyline for Base and trim in doorway, Room molding polyline for Room Base board and Quarter round, Elevated room, Lowered door, Custom ceiling plane. Just a few things and no warranty. Not bad for 1930. A few more glitches here and there to be fixed yet. You will know a lot by the time you finish this one. Here is your Plan File. Ok then a custom molding line for the Jamb and Casing as well as the Baseboard for the room?
-
Very nice Eric, What did you do about the Door Jamb on the back side?
-
Still working on that part. Door trim is a little tricky. Do you Skype?
-
Something like this maybe?

Steve, I am not sure if this will work for your situation or not but you could try moving the transom windows to the second story and then just bring them back down into position with an absolute elevation. You might need a wall above with invisible materials.

Thanks Jon, That looks interesting and free which I like. I will check it out some more but with a quick scan it looks like there is no 3D PDF import option that would help me out with my immediate problem.

Have you set up your Railing Plan Display in the Newels/Balusters tab of the Staircase Specification DBX ?
-
If I am understanding correctly you will want to turn off the auto railing from the stair DBX and draw a short manual rail up to that structural post. Then you will have to mess with the wall position until it fills in. I think there is a video on how to wrap the stairs around a wall like that. I will look for you. https://www.chiefarchitect.com/videos/watch/390/stair-wall-options-partial-railing-wall-under-stairs-stairwell.html?playlist=89 This should allow you to keep the auto rail if you can position the wall correctly.

CJ If you would like to eliminate the Newel post in the center of the stairs, just increase your Newel spacing until it disappears. It looks like you are using X9 ?
-
This is interesting. I downloaded your library file and then opened it from explorer and even though I had X9 open already it opened X8 and auto loaded and then when I selected it, got a warning "The selected object could not be loaded. The object may have been written by a later version" So no problem I will just delete it from my X8 library but NO not a chance, no drag, no right click, just the same warning over and over.

Yup, 30 imports or 2 weeks, not enough to build a library but enough to make sure it works. Sounds like a good option.

Thank You Michael, Do you know how long the free trial is good for?

I think they have something screwed up because the "Auto CAD 2D (.dxf )" and the "DXF file (.dxf )" are the exact same file size, name, and 2D contents. I will call them on Monday.
-
I don't have 700 U.S.D. for Sketchup yet but I will try a few more imports from another department to see if something is screwed up. I was getting a warning about "No 3D faces found in file" so then I imported as Drawing and got a 2d line drawing.
-
Yusuf the shot I posted is the option list given on the Manufactures download page of their website. Yes you are correct that DXF should work for a 3D object but not in this situation. Unfortunately DWG and DXF files can be 2D or 3D without any differentiation in the file extension. I looked at the 3D.PDF with Adobe and it looked great. Only if there was a good way to convert.

Gene You could try this but if that does not work then you will need tech support for sure. Just be aware that anything new in your toolbars or User Library etc... will revert to your X8 setup. https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/12585-x-9-set-up/?do=findComment&comment=108288
