Power Users Preventing Needed Changes in Chief
Joe_Carrick replied to KevinWaldron's topic in General Q & A
I agree with Michael. God, the other users and CA all know that I want more than CA is currently willing or able to do. Sometimes we see suggestions for functionality that is already in Chief. I think that's pretty much the only time we will disagree with a suggestion - unless it just doesn't fit within the general scope of Architectural Design Software. If the post's in the Suggestion Forum I personally try not to be negative or offer any Work-Around. If it's in the Q&A Forum most of us will try to explain how to accomplish the desired result. Usually there are several possible ways to do something and there will be several users giving their method. -
1. Change the Wall Type so that: a. The Foundation is built to Layer 3, not Layer 1 b. The Bead Board Thickness is at least 7/16" - currently you have it set at 0" 2. Build the Foundation. Here's a pic with Foundation and Roof

Kevin, You have Capslock ON

I purchased this click-lock flooring at HD for $2.69 psf. I'm installing it in our cabin at Big Bear Lake, CA. It's so much nicer than Laminate and extremely easy to install. Note: The foam underlayment I'm using adds about 45 cents psf.

Here's a material I created that might be useful to others. It's a Random Plank (Distressed Dark Honey Bamboo) Flooring. The Planks are 6' long and are in widths of 6", 5.5" and 3.5" with the end joints staggered. The Texture is 72"x60" so that there's a more random look by having more end joint locations. Enjoy Bamboo, Random Plank.calibz

I find that the easiest way to do Board and Batt Walls is to define a "Wall Type" with an additional 3/4" thick layer of 2" Framing Material spaced at 12" o.c. When the Wall Framing is created this layer can be seen in Camera Views if the "Framing, Walls" layer is displayed. If your wall is SIP or some other non-conventional framing type you can set the Wall Framing to have only 1 top and bottom Plate and all the Headers to be only 2" in height. There may still be some Batts that you will want to delete or move at doors and windows but it will mostly be automatic. OTOH, if you have a conventionally framed wall, leave the dbl top plate and header sizes for the framing and just edit those members for that exterior framing layer. The easiest way to do this editing will be in the Wall Detail, Layer 1.

Issues with exporting elevation views?
Joe_Carrick replied to clfrycreative's topic in General Q & A
It probably isn't working because X8 introduced "Live Views" for Elevations and Sections sent to Layout. I suspect that the export isn't using the "Plot Lines" that it used to. This is probably an unforeseen side effect of this feature of X8. -

I don't know what the problem is - but why are you exporting elevations to AutoCAD? -
I basically agree but I suspect that the "patch" is a part of the window symbol. It would logically be made out of a "wall section" so that the materials could be edited to match any wall type.

Migrating your own custom plan and layout templates
Joe_Carrick replied to Designers_Edge's topic in General Q & A
That won't load all macros, wall types, layer sets, annosets, etc. To get all of that you would need to do the export/import dance. I just always open my prior version templates in the new version and save them in the new version template folders. I've been doing it this way for over 10 years and have never had a problem. -
Scott, I can't access that video. The pic in post #11 doesn't show how to get the shape angled at the bottom. I can use a dog-ear arch (left) to get the shape correct at the top but reflecting vertically only makes it a "V" instead of inverting the shape. I'm pretty sure I've done a similar window in X6 or X7 but don't remember how and I don't seem to be able to do it in X8.

That's the way I do "Storefront Window Walls". When you insert a Door in a Railing it only makes a "Doorway" but you can change that to a "Hinged Door".
-
A "Panel" Railing would be my choice. You would need to define the Panel as a "Millwork Symbol" with the screen and horizontal rails. Then use a "Post to Beam" railing wall using that Panel. You can add a Door if you need it.

Ben, You can suppress the apron in the dbx.

No, but if you use the Roof Planes instead of creating new Polylines, the Labels will be on the Roof Plane Labels layer. These new Labels are available for all Polyline based objects. Note also that Roof Planes have Ruby Attributes for more than just one area - Surface, Projected and Overhang are all available.

Don't worry about the Archives. This is just Chief's way of insuring that you will have a backup in case something goes wrong. Where files are located is specified in "Preferences" and you generally would not need to change those settings. Most of Chief's data is located in C:/Users/<your_name>/Documents/Chief Architect Premier X8 Data/ Archives Backdrops Database Libraries (Symbol Libraries, etc) Hotkeys Images lex Scripts (exported Ruby macros) Templates (Plan and Layout) Textures Toolbars You can set a location for your Plan and Layout Files (normally the Layout File for each project should be in the same folder as the Plan) Naturally, the executable and supporting files are installed in the "Programs" folder.

1. set the ceiling height of the bonus room to 12" 2. uncheck ceiling over this room 3. check use soffit for ceiling
-
Just use Molding Profiles for the Exterior Casing, Lintel and Sill, set the sizes as needed and change the material to Stucco.

Here's a Library with a Full over Full Bunk Bed. It includes 2 versions: 1. Symbol without Pillows 2. Architectural Block of Symbol with Pillows added This is an accurate representation of the Weston Bunk Beds by "Discovery Wood Furniture". These are available at wayfair.com, sears, amazon, etc. Bunk Beds.calibz

Can I have 2x floor joists and 4x floor joists for the second floor
Joe_Carrick replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
Robert, AFAIK, Build Framing only uses the "Floor" structure, not the "Room Floor" structure. I just edit the individual framing members where necessary after the initial framing has been built. -

Joe_Carrick replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
Scott, You should be able to select any (or a set of) joists in a framing plan or 3D view and change the size (width, height, length). You will have to turn of "auto framing" but this is obviously a condition where that would be appropriate. -
Try using the CounterTop Tool instead. But I agree that any such object - including Cabinets - should be able to be "back angled".

Terminology is different depending on where you are. Michael up in Alaska could I'm sure share some of the lingo of the far north.
-
No, there isn't. We've requested it many times - post it as a suggestion in that forum. The more people ask for it the more likely it will happen.
-
It should - but why not try it yourself?
