Thanks Ryan - That works (sorta'), but I'm still not getting a rectangular cut-out (bit of jog at the top).  Besides, the vents I am using have casing (historical home).  Any other ideas on how to get it to work with the casing?  Kevin

not in chief at the moment but I bet in the framing there is an option that cuts out the concrete buckout like doors that maybe can be unclicked?  Looks like the brick knows to go to the window but it is leaving space for "framing" in the buckout of the pony wall.

Originally I was hired to do the kitchen and baths on each floor, so to keep file size down, just did them separately.  Now the scope has changed and actually this morning did a 3 story so I can do that.  I'm just trying to figure out how to add the plans with the kitchen and the baths to each other.  I have to be honest, I've never tried to do anything like this before.

I would recommend Edit all areas on floor copy and paste into the new joined plan.  Use the align to wall below and above if any are slightly off.  Will take some tinkering though.

I've got some 30 x 16 louvered crawl space vents (rectangular) that need to recess into the brick foundation to the sheathing layer.  I keep getting the result shown in the attached picture.  I suspect the problem is the pony wall foundation I am using to get a brick ledge.  Any ideas on how to do this?  Thanks,  Kevin

Is that a window that you customized to make the vent? If so have you tried turning off the casing?

  4. I would say I end up doing the drafting for the engineer off of redlines about 70% of the time.  Normally they will literally just send me scans with red ink (lots of times hard to read where I have to ask for clarification.)  I provide the construction documents at one price with the allowance of an hourly rate for any engineer based drafting.  They pay the engineer directly and my layout template has a section for them to stamp and put in their info or I will put in their info if I am drafting and they can just a fix their stamp after printing.

  5. Sounds like you are manually adjusting your wall heights?  If so I strongly recommend using default top and bottom wall heights (structure tab in wall dbx) and since most likely that wall would be ballon framed through ☟

Lower wall, try "balloon through ceiling above"

You probably are having issues with the attic wall above in the same space as the second which is why the windows are showing with a wall through it.

    Try

1.) Group selecting the windows in the second floor wall.

2.) Deleting the second floor wall completely.

3.) Selecting balloon through ceiling above in the structure tab in the wall dbx.

4.) CTRL+ALT+V or CMD+OPT+V to place the windows back in place in the wall (you may have to place them by height again depending on how you had them set before.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Leave Auto build roofs on setup wall by wall correctly.  Add second floor with move roofs checked.  Either manually draw or adjust the auto built 2nd floor walls to location.

Roof should be able to be auto generated everywhere.  Little more challenging with the one you have but not that hard.

I have a two story house and the auto exterior dimensions I am trying to put on the 1st floor but they only will go on the second. My auto exterior dimensions is checked under active display so im not sure why I will only appear for the 2nd story

BTW looks like you are a little new to the forum so WELCOME!

It is really helpful in getting help faster and more accurate as well as saves alot of people's time if you fill out your signature.  Here is a link of why it helps and how to do it.

    Try this:

    - temporarily disconnect the deck

    - generate the automatic dimensions

    - group select all of the dimensions (should be easy to do when you are in dimension mode)

    - open the specification dialog and then click ok to close it

    - click yes when asked if you want to turn off the auto regeneration of the dimensions

    - reconnect the deck

The automatic exterior dimensions don't want to generate when you have full wrap around deck.  Disconnecting the deck will allow you to generate them and then converting them into manual ones will allow you to keep them.  This is the kind of thing that I would encourage you to report to tech support when you run into them.

This problem appears as if it is either a glitch or it is dependent upon the flow of build.

    I tried this quickly with;

1.) Building the first floor with wrap-around deck then auto dimensioning, then building second floor from first & building wrap around deck. - WORKED FINE

2.) Building the first floor, then building second floor from first & building wrap around decks on both, then auto dimensioning by floor. - WORKED FINE

3.) Building the first floor with wrap-around deck, then building second floor from first & building wrap around deck, going back and auto dimensioing each floor. - WORKED FINE

4.) Did all three steps with roof on, and no difference?

well I was forced to delete my deck in order to get the dimensions to appear. even if I turned them off on my active display set it still wouldn't work. li don't know how to keep my deck and dimensions

I would recommend sending this plan file into technical support as if it is working how you are saying it is there seems to be something wrong.

@Dermot am I missing something here?

It's the exterior room causing the cut in the wall material display, but in the wall dbx only.

Did you try "refreshing" the dbx preview by changing from vector to standard and back if wanted?  That seems to help me when I see it happen.

  10. I noticed recently after the latest update that I have several different plan files where my preview is bringing up in PBR mode and it will not force it to be updated till I change the mode.  Not sure when I changed it to PBR mode for that and will have to look up how to change it but it always shows correctly after I change it. I need to track that down one of these times but it always works once I refresh it.

Your roof planes are actually controlling the attic wall heights so it is just a matter of lowering the roof planes that 2" that you need.  Edit All Roof Planes or Transform and Replicate should work fine for you.

Just to add to chops excellent suggestion is now that you have manually adjusted those heights you will need to do as I mentioned and set your walls back to original top and bottom heights for them to auto adjust to your new roof height.

  12. I would highly recommend not manually adjusting your wall heights in 95% of cases.  Maybe go back select all of your walls and in the dbx structure tab reset back to original heights for top and bottom.

after that is fixed try the edit all roof planes and adjust your heel height there.

  13. Save multiple copies of the item (I.e. receptacles) with the number in your library.  Place all of your outlets and lights then go back room by room grab for example one of the outlets in that room and use the change all in the same room option to grab the new outlet with the appropriate circuit number on it.  Would take a while to setup but can be done quite fast once set up.

Since my last post and solution to deep set windows with the brick sill everything has been fine.  However, now if I want to apply a certain casing to the exterior window lets say CA 12 it deforms the whole thing and appears to only work without a basing style besides the flat one shown.  Is there anyway to make this work using a different casing type without having to customize it with a polyline?

My example would be my picture at the top window 3 but apply a CA 12 casing to the exterior.  Once I do it changes the entire look of the casing and isnt useable.

    Thanks!

If I am understanding you correctly...  I am pretty sure you can make your own.  Trace the face of the casing and make it thick enough to protrude to where you want it and save to your library as a molding profile?

  15. If you are using the chief template or import the view sets from the standard template there is a Roof framing and a Roof plan saved plan view as well.  The "new" way of doing layer set control.

    I did it !

    I ordered a 16" MacBook Pro

    2.4 GHz Intel Core i9 8-Core,

    32GB RAM

    2TB SSD

AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM

It's going to be interesting to see how CA X12 performs compared to my 2013 Mac Pro

Awesome, nice specs too.  I was tied to having to buy one locally so was unable to upgrade but it is still a pretty impressive machine.  I only use it for travelling whcih with COVID I have not been doing but what I did use it for was so much better than my old MBP 13 where I had to bring an external GPU and if I was going somewhere for a while had to find an external monitor or bring my second monitor.  16" is just big enough that it is doable for a day or so.

Let us know your thoughts once you get it! :)

  17. Glad it worked for you.  This and the ALDO (Active Layer Display Options) box are super helpful in finding issues like that.  Another hint for your arsenal when things are not working correctly is the glass house 3d rendering technique which helps you find things that are mislocated or placed.  Nice looking kitchen btw! :)

  18. Try selecting it in elevation mode to check which layer it is on and make sure that is turned on in the "3d mode" you use.

BTW this would be the answer for Chief Architect Premier and Interiors but it would possibly be different for other softwares.  Most answers are dependent on your software and sometimes on your computer hardware so it is highly recommended and you will always get answers quicker if you fill out your Forum signature line to include your software and hardware information.  (See mine for an example.)  The guys on this forum are extremely helpful and generous of their time.  But because the majority answers are tied to which version you are using or even sometimes the hardware you have it running on if they don’t easily see the info in your signature line they either have to ask and wait for you to respond or they just simply pass on to the next person who has filled out their signature line.

Here is an article that will help you fill it out: https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/18908-signature-here-at-chief-talk

    Thanks DzinEye,

Unchecking the automatic subfloor was the last part of the puzzle to make it work as expected!  Along with the Make Terrain Hole function, I can get it to work as hoped/expected.

Thanks much for to all for helping me walk through this. I appreciate it!  This is my first post on the forum.

No, the terrain is not really that steap, it was just a quick test I setup.  I took the test a little further with suggestions from above and I have what I was looking for.

Here is the "finished" product and another attempt at downloading the finished plan.

Looks good.  Not sure you are aware that chief is doing a free webinar on site plans and terrains tomorrow Thursday 5-14-20 @12pm pst.  You can email them or hit the link on their Facebook or Instagram pages to get invited to it.

It would be nice if you could put the page Label format in page Templates and have each successive page automatically pick up that Label format without having to specify the format or the Template to use.  ie:

    • Template G - Label: G-#
    • G-1
    • G-2
    • G-3
    • Template A - Label: A-#
    • A-1
    • A-2
    • A-3
    • A-4
    • Template S - Label: S-#
    • S-1
    • S-2
    • S-3

This scheme would simply pass the Label formatting from the Template to each successive page.  It would also be nice if the Layout Page Table would optionally leave a space at each new template location.

I would post this as a Suggestion but since it might not be what everyone would want, I don't want to do that yet.  There would probably need to be an over-ride capability if the Label format was specified for any page rather than it being left blank.

Although for me personally I could see this being helpful many others have other formats they do and I could see this being a restriction for others using it that way.  It really only takes a little bit of time to setup your layout template as I have done where it auto populates the # and copying and pasting Selecting all on the page and deleting is really only a few seconds.  Not sure if this would be something that should get thrown into the suggestions bin that may shove something more crucial such as Stairs or roof tool adjustments out...????  Just a thought.
