And in O.B.C 9.8.7.5. Ergonomic Design (1) A clearance of not less than 50 mm shall be provided between a handrail and any surface behind it. 9.8.7.6. Projections into Stairs and Ramps (1) Handrails and projections below handrails, including handrail supports and stair stringers, shall not project more than 100 mm into the required width of a stair or ramp.

Sorry misquoted the code, the max intrusion into the stairwell is 100mm (4") and the space between the handrail and the wall is 50mm (2").
-
Yup the Ontario Building Code requires 100mm space between the handrail and the wall and that all handrails be continuous. Most examiners will allow that to be covered in notes, but you get the odd one that requires it to be shown in a detail. Good luck appealing to a supervisor, because from that moment on every job that you submit is going to get the magnifying treatment. Weeks will drag into months to get a permit. It only takes one plan examiner in a department to tar you as a problem designer.

I couldn't agree more. Some of the plans examiners get bored if there isn't a lot of work going through, and a very few of them play power games. The vast majority are very professional and helpful.

Drawzilla, they want them in all views. What a pain. Chopsaw, I will give that a try. Thanks.

Does anyone know how to show brackets supporting handrails on the wall side of a stairway? A plans examiner wants me to show them on the drawing.

coulda, woulda shoulda people all over the world say thank you for listening and thank you for many really great enhancements to the great product. As a convert from AutoCAD Architecture, I am knocked out with the great features that make it possible for me to sell my work with astounding presentation tools. Just a quick aside: (the following to be read out loud in a theatrical whisper) "Please stop all advertising and promotion of your product. I really don't want my competition to know how I do this." Simply wonderful. Thanks.

Sometimes this happens anyway. Just sayin. -

Done. By the way the PDF that I am sending is actually a really good resolution, but not after inserting into a plan or layout file. Just sayin. Here is a typical PDF that I am talking 13222 Survey Plan.pdf about and here is what it looks like in the layout 2 Storey Rear Entrance.layout

No, Michael, these are direct to PDF copies of AutoCAD work by the land surveyor. It is the only way I can insert a survey with a registered surveyors stamp. They will send AutoCAD drawing to me as well, but because these can be edited, they won't include their stamp in that drawing. Converting to a TFF is not something that I have tried, but I will as a workaround. I have the same problems trying to read text from building PDF drawings used to trace from once imported. It seems that CA is lowering the resolution of any PDF imported. I could be wrong, but that is how it would appear from my observations.

I am going to bring this to tech support's attention as well.

Sort of related. I have been having a problem with importing PDF files used to show a survey. The original PDF is crisp and can be easily read, but the PDF in the layout is fuzzy and hard to read. Does anyone know how to improve the PDF resolution in layouts?

Quick answer. Yup it can

I watched the preview, and my hat is off to the development team. This is a major upgrade and some of the new features are really great. Well done!

Drywall and frost are a big problem. Not recommended where below freezing temperatures may last for hours or even days. DenseGlass (as suggested by Eric) works if it is covered with stucco over a water barrier. Be sure to check with your local building department to ensure code compliance.

Any window opening in a masonry wall usually requires an angle iron lintel. That seems to be a problem for CA. Although there is a lintel option for windows, you have to do the lintel manually or create a profile for it. The lintel doesn't show up correctly in the window schedule if it is an angle, i.e. 3 1/2 x 4 x 1/4 LLV (long leg vertical.) Does anyone have a workaround?

Well said!

Yea, but then think of all the great work for roofers down the road Michael.

Aamir77 Here is a wall that has the features that you are looking for. 1 draw stairs and floor above 2 add stairs and stairwell (auto stairwell can be used to cut the hole in the floor above. 3 draw a wall on the lower floor next to the stairs 4 in section, drag the bottom of the wall up to lowest elevation that you need 5 drag up the high-end corner to match the slope 6 open the wall database interface window and change the wall type to No Locate and No Room Definition. See attached plan file. Upper Stair Wall.plan

I have noticed this as well. Click on print, and it doesn't matter which printer is selected, and it takes an inordinate amount of time before CA actually does something that shows to the user (me) that something is going on. Since the latest upgrade, the phenomenon has gotten much worse. At first, I thought that CA had locked up, but no, if you just let it be and be patient, up pops the print settings window, and then away it goes. Choose a different printer at this point and back to the coffee break pause once more.

Steve, What an awesome post and video. Thank you for the great video about solids and solid manipulation. While it does answer my question on how do accomplish this in a very professional way, it does not address the need for a tool to do this type of edit with a simple click on an edge that can be found in almost any other 3d cad modelling application. My thanks for going to the trouble to do this though. I will certainly be using this in the future. Regards Doug

Michael, That does add a chamfer to the exterior by adding a molding outside of the slab or countertop. In a way this is a workaround for a missing 3d tool that is common in other cad packages. Just saying... Thanks for your feedback, your comments are always helpful and appreciated.

OK, I will do that right now!
