Larry_Sweeney
I have a 2x6 Pony wall with 1 1/4" thick clapboard siding on the lower 2/3 and 1/2" shingle siding on the top 1/3. After working on the design for some time I realized I needed to thicken the shingle siding from 1/2" to 7/8". When I changed the thickness of the shingles, I noticed my Pony wall moved back half the distance of the added thickness (added 3/8" moved back 3/16". In trying to trouble shoot this "problem" I increased the clapboard thickness by 1" to see what the results would be. The wall did not move when increasing the clapboard thickness, moved only when I increased to top shingle siding section of the Pony wall and that would move half the distance back of the total increased thickness I added to the siding. I have my 2x6 studs as the main layer and I have the pony wall to align with the outside of the main layer. In some way I'm hoping I'm just having a "senior moment" because I'm at a lost as to what is going on. Any advice would be much appreciated. Larry_Sweeney
Because the plan file is so large I have it accessible through this Dropbox link. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/9twicwwztnk3v6i4lnyw4/Crone-36-04242025.zip?rlkey=voi726umw83cfyak9qlhunmn6&dl=0 I don't this very often, so I how it's accessible and opens for you. In the first attachment below, I show the pony wall alignment before I tried making the top section siding layer thicker. I also show with the extra lines the alinement of the layers. The second attachment shows the pony wall stepping back one half the distance of the increase I made to the top section siding. In the final attachment I changed the thickness of the siding of the upper section of the pony wall back to its original thickness and increased the siding thickness of the lower section of the pony wall. When doing this the wall did not step back (which is how it's supposed to do) as shown in that attachment. When trying to trouble shoot this problem I copied the pony wall into a new plan, made a simple four-sided room and then changed the siding thicknesses as mentioned above. When doing this in the new plan, neither the top nor bottom section jumped back. Whatever is going on with the pony wall problem has to be caused by something in this plan. I'm at a loss. Also, the area I made the attachments is circled in red on the first floor. Could I "look past" this problem? ------------ Yes, I suppose, but I sure would like to know what's causing the problem. As always, I do appreciate your time and knowledge in attempting to solve this. Thank you
joey_martin
Choose to align the walls from the inside face. There is a checkbox.
Larry_Sweeney
Joey...............I had the pony wall aligned with the Main Layer Outside since both top and bottom sections have 2x6 studs for the main layer. The answer your suggestion though, I had tried all the alignment options, and they all performed the same way as the problem I'm having with this plan. When I open your upper pony wall and Copy the wall type, and change the shingle layer to .875 but change nothing else, it does not move the main layer. Not sure why that's happening, seems like a bug, but I would simply create the new wall type, change all the exterior walls to use the new type, and move on with life.
