TJSAGE
How do I maintain existing complicated 2-story roof, add an addition to it, and build new roof on it w/o changing the exist. roof?
lbuttery
you probably have to do the new roof manually one trick is to create the addition then copy the plan and build the roof with auto-gen in the copy then copy the addition roof planes to the original plan using edit area hold position I have asked for almost a decade for the ability to draw a marquee around an area and have the auto-gen build the roof for only that area Lew
TJSAGE
OK, I like the marquee option the best. I will work towards the solution now. Thanks a lot for the response. I'll post the results when it's complete or when I get stuck. This forum is great.
tommy1
Just do it manually. I do remodels every day. That's 99.9% of my work.
glennw
It depends whether you built the roof manually or automatic. If it was automatic, select the roof planes, open their dbx and on the General Panel...Measurements, check Mark As Edited. If you then go and rebuild the roofs automatically, you need to check Retain Edited Automatic Roof Planes. For manually drawn roof planes, and if you want to auto generate new roof planes, check Retain Manually Drawn Roof Planes on the Roof panel of the Build Roof dbx. Or, the other option, depending on your circumstances is to use the Roof Group option which you can find in the Room Specification dbx, on the General panel.
chief58
Learn how to build roofs manually I do all of mine that way and find it is easier since I know how I want them to be and don't depend on the program to guess what I am thinking
lbuttery
CA recommends learning auto-roofs as 24+ roof styles can be done via auto-gen then using manual as needed in general once you use manual for a roof system you need to stop using auto this is why I have been advocating for being allowed to marquee a section and having auto apply only to that section some how I doubt if we will ever have this feature Lew
Doggies1954
you need to stop using auto Lew would you please explain to me why this is so. Absolute rubbish. I use auto all the time unless I want to create a roof section manually. Been using CA since V4. Each to their own.
lbuttery
Len: where did I say that ??? I have been an advocate for auto-gen ever since starting with ver 9.5 Lew
tommy1
When I was learning the program, roofs were the hardest for me because all the builders here now make the roofs as complicated as possible. Louis Fernandez taught me the program and made me learn how to do roofs manually (mainly trial and error on my own) because most of the time Chief won't completely do the roofs the way ours are done and therefore you better know how to edit roofs manually or you're in trouble. I'm so glad he made me learn roofs manually because now there's practically not a roof I can put together one way or another (automatically, manual or partial manual). I get a lot of people calling me about doing roofs. I'll always remember him telling me that if I can't do roofs, then I will not be much help to him if I'm going to work for him. chief58
Tommy I agree about roofs when I was building house I always stick built my roofs and know doing house manually helps me do them and if I can go to the job site and build it I don't draw it so building it myself on the computer helps me an my customer. By the way whatever happen to Louis Fernandez, he was always a great contributor to this site

If I misinterpreted your sentence then I apologize. But you can still use manual roofs with an auto generated roof. Even with editing it can still be done. lbuttery
Len: yes, you are mis-reading it once a roof has manual edits it can be difficult to switch back to auto-roof kinda like a one-way street for that roof but the next roof should start as auto and only go manual as needed I personally do auto-roofs the majority of the time once manual is needed my partner takes over while I can fool around with manual - its probably best that I don't my recommendations is that 1. anyone only using manual roofs should learn auto roofs also 2. anyone only using auto-roofs should learn manual roofs also if I didn't have my partner I would be forced to learn manual roofs better than my limited skills are currently since I'm retired I'll probably not bother ....
