I bought a G75 ROG at Best Buy last year to be my second computer. My old desktop (specs listed below) runs faster than the newer laptop but as a second PC it is fine. If it were my only PC I would NOT be happy as it is just adequate, if I only used a laptop for all my work I would want something a lot faster. DJP

This is how I learned curved roofs back before the feature was added to Chief (back in Version Four) from good ole Dan Baumann (thanks Dan!) DJP

You can always communicate with Tech Support on such matters, they handle this sort of thing on a daily basis. If it happened to me, I would first suspect my mouse drivers and make sure they are fully up to date. See if that helps. There are several things one can do and check for but I would start there and see if that helps or betters your performance. BTW what is a "SP4"? DJP

Chief Architect 9.5 - Loading on my new computer
DavidJPotter replied to GLOBE-Res's topic in General Q & A
Others have reported that they have done as above and also say that Version 9.5 runs fine otherwise (what they mean by "fine" may or may not agree with your definition of "Fine" but that is what several other Chief Users have reported here within the last year or so. AS I have said, I went the dual boot route where 9.5 and other versions created to run in XP actually do run quite well. Windows XP is still the third most used operating system worldwide but I would NEVER use it for internet browsing as it has way too many security weaknesses for that these days. But is fully capable of supporting applications that were designed to run within it. DJP -
Need to transfer my files to a 24x36 pdf file
DavidJPotter replied to RenoGreg's topic in Seeking Services
You can do this yourself by printing a PDF at the Home Designer Pro size (12" x 18") and then annotate it for scale at 200% (1/8" = 1' on 18x24 annotate the pdf at 1/4" = 1' scale). You take that PDF for each page to a print shop or blueprint shop, they can print it on 18 x 24, scan the page and then upsize it 200% and reprint it to 24"x 36" paper and it will if done properly then print to scale. Many users who do not have large format plotters do this all the time with reliable success. This can be done natively in Chief Premier like jbaehmer suggested but you can also do it yourself as above. DJP -
Chief not working after Windows update 5/15/2017
DavidJPotter replied to Jason_M's topic in General Q & A
Mine is working perfectly on my Desktop which includes the "Creative Update" and on my laptop which I have as a "Windows Insider" the absolute latest Windows 10 beta version. Sorry you are having a difficulty. DJP -
Just keep in mind that new users and new forum posters are just that: "new" and do not have the foresight of a veteran. The forum is for the delivery of "Help" to others and to self, you always should try to see the other person's viewpoint and to treat others as you would like to be treated. I am not being "holier than thou" at all, I to often wish I had kept some post to myself or thought it through before speaking. No one is "perfect" and wise so you just have to make sure you do your best for self and others. DJP

Completely uncalled for and unnecessary sarcasm. Not funny, just mean spirited. DJP

Architectural does NOT allow manual editing of framing members at all, so for your purposes I can only recommend Home Designer Pro which does allow manual creation of both framing and roof planes. Unless you can do both of those you have no chance of obtaining an accurate Materials List. do not waste your time and money on anything but HD Pro. DJP

You would NEVER use this setting if you intended to "Print to Scale". "Fit to paper" means exactly that: no scale is possible. Why it also "locks up your computer" is a mystery to me. Like a lot of posts you have provided not enough information to understand your problem but it feels like to me that you may have hardware weakness or perhaps a lack of understanding what exactly it is that you want to do and how to do it. Chop, have you viewed this provided video? https://www.chiefarchitect.com/videos/watch/5302/active-layer-display-options-side-window.html?playlist=49 I am not sure what "issues" you may be having using what is merely a productivity tool, can you be a little more specific please? You use it or not at your choice, it does not seem mysterious to me. DJP

Chief Architect 9.5 - Loading on my new computer
DavidJPotter replied to GLOBE-Res's topic in General Q & A
Just as you have not upgraded past 9.5 you can stay with X9 for as long as you like, it is a personal decision, there are no absolutes. There is NO good reason to do anything other than to get Chief Premier 9.5 installed and running on your new PC. It does require some persistence by you but others have done this successfully and you can to. There is no reason why you cannot just repair your old computer and then just drive on also. Just decide what you want to have happen and then do what is necessary to make it so. DJP -
I have never seen this error message since I started using Chief back in 1994. My advice is to uninstall X5 and then do a clean reinstall and see if that gets it going again. Something is corrupted with your Library files database. DJP

Corner and room definition issue - need help
DavidJPotter replied to JECORMIER's topic in General Q & A
All of your floor zero walls are out of alignment with the walls above. They were also mismarked as being "Terrain Walls" (which they are not). You really need to carefully read your "Reference Manual" in various places so you no longer guess what to do but you know what to do. DJP -
Chief Architect 9.5 - Loading on my new computer
DavidJPotter replied to GLOBE-Res's topic in General Q & A
You must go and download updated drivers for the dongle for Windows 10 or whatever you have or no go. I dual boot with Windows XP and Windows 10 where I use XP for antique software. DJP -
When I am having a difficulty getting a specific dimension point exactly where I want it, I use a CAD line to the dimension string end and then align the symbol or object to that defined point. I also sometimes use the dimension tool that creates its own dimension points for similar reasons. The point is that you have a job to do and it is your responsibility to get it done using the tools you have. Chief's tools are tools not "Helpers" you master your tools to get your work done always. The tool helps you but it does not DO the job for you. DJP

The key is to use the right background for the camera viewpoint. You do this by picking the right image or by editing the backdrop for a specific camera rendering. I prefer going to a proposed site and taking backdrop photos from precisely located locations in the real world and then plot those same locations in the .plan file to create the camera viewpoint. Works great, takes a little extra work but well worth it in terms of reality and believability of the render. DJP

I learned early not to rely on ANY automatic or software based safety gizmos. Such a naive faith in machines is touching but is actually just personally irresponsible. I manually save (F3 or Ctrl-S) every few seconds while I work so as to minimize any crash losses. If the plan file I am working on shows ANY tendencies towards being crashy I make a save as copy of the file once an hour and save it to my own Archive Folder in the main Client Folder, this way I do not have to rely on the "Auto Archive" automatic system. This way I am fully covered from start to finish. Back in 1998 I lost a day's work, so I accessed what I could do to prevent it ever happening again and the above is what I implemented as a safety protocol. There is always something that you can do about any situation. Blaming others or things outside of yourself for your own outcomes is a deadly waste of time for all concerned. DJP

Does the 3D-viewer-invite work if forwarded?
DavidJPotter replied to GeneDavis's topic in General Q & A
This is true only if they also own and use the same version of Chief that you created the file in OR they can download a copy of the Client Viewer or Demo Version. There is no way to make it completely proprietary, you either trust them or not. I never share files with another without first being retained or paid. I have never been screwed or lost a design contract by sharing .plan files with others to date since around 1999, you do what seems best for your purposes always. DJP -
Each view in this software has its own "Display Options Dialog". In this dialog you can decide what objects and layers show or are absent manually. Plan view has such a dialog. Each Camera type has its own "Display Options" which only controls that camera type. So there you have it, that is how it is programmed to work at your specific commands. DJP

I think your floor is asymmetric enough that the auto roof generator will fail each time (I could be wrong). Here is a You Tube video of me manually editing and maybe fixing your roof based on a lot of guessing on my part: DJP

Thanks! DJP

I have never successfully used elevation points nor have I ever found that I needed to to get proper terrain. I do use lines, splines, breaks and regions. Points, especially if you have many of these are time consuming, hard to see on screen and sometimes hard to find just the point that has the improper value. You are welcome to disagree with me, I do what works for me only and have found points to be an unnecessary pain. DJP

Door jamb with no casing does not extend to wall ext
DavidJPotter replied to dskogg's topic in General Q & A
Just a wild guess, but check your "Options" tab of the offending window and door and make sure it is not checked "Recessed". That is probably the cause of the unwanted framing. Look and see. BTW you tried to attach your .plan file while it was still open in Chief (which does not work). First close chief and then attach your .plan file so others can then look and see what is what. DJP
