Having taken a brief look at the suggested links I see nothing there other than generalizations. What the author fails to recognize or convey is that what determines ones' computer configuration needs is dependent upon the size of the project being handled by the software, the users workflow and what other software the user requires to run concurrently with the primary package. This is the determining factor which varies for each and every user and as such so does their system configuration needs, this is further compounded when there are budgetary constraints. Graham

Mark - you must belong to the NDA "National Drawing Association". Agree, there is an emotional connection when one draws by hand. Similar to fine cabinetry makers, you feel more connected and personally closer to the resulting product. Artists are a great example, not sure Jackson Pollock would have been able to project the same emotion using an IPad. However for myself, I'm just not that good of an Artist and as such computer rendering is a much better way for me to convey to clients my design concepts. Graham

This all sounds great but it lacks in a fundemental understanding that ones' hand is only a biomechanical device, it is controlled by ones' brain through electrical and chemical processeses. Like any device it has limitations in movement, dexterity and resolution. What sets us apart is the ability to create tools that free us from these inherent biomechanical limitations. Our mind, being almost limitless, is now not as limited by the anatomy it is contained within. Where would our understanding of physics be if they were restricted to using only ones' hand, a piece of chalk and a chalkboard, not sure Stephen Hawking would be supportive of this. Graham

Google Drive + OneDrive on one machine

Not 100% sure but I believe that files are backed-up based on the last time they were accessed. Library files are accessed every time you click on a library Item. Graham -

Personally I think it is the best cloud system out there, especially if you are a Windows user. It's backed right into the OS, it's just another Drive, once setup there is nothing to manage, every program sees it, every file explorer command functions. All other devices stay synced, tablet, laptops, phone and more. They also have an app for IOS and Android. Have never had a problem, all files are backed up and can be retrieved from any where there is wifi or a data connection from any computer. Graham -

Larry - OneDrive has a file sharing link option. Any client with a browser can access the shared folder/file through an e-mailed link. Graham -
The primary purpose of rendering, either by hand or digitally, is so others can see and understand your vision. Digital rendering provides a much faster and broader means to do this. I for one want to focus my time on designing, not the preparation of pictorials. Graham

If all you have done is modify an individual cabinet then there is no need to block-it, just save to User Library and you will have full editing capabilities like any cabinet. Usually only block when you have a created something like an island with many differing components, after blocking you can move and position this as a single unit. If changes are required you can either explode the block in place or move it to a blank area, explode it, modify it, then re-block it and move it back. Graham

Thanks Chief Architect For 17 Years Of Service
TheKitchenAbode replied to Tim_Houston's topic in Sales Related Questions
In full Agreement. Chief is not just a great Software package that one uses in isloation. It's a Community comprised of highly attentive support personel and a wide range of user participants that never hesitate to assist and extend their knowledge and experiences to others. I work alone but when working with Chief I'm never on my own. Graham -
Same for me, it just starts to function properly after a few tries. No need to reboot or close and open the plan. Does not appear to be associated with anything in particular as far as I can tell. Graham

Have had similar copy/paste issues, can't find any reason for it happening. Had one the other day where I did a copy/paste, nothing appeared and nothing under the original, did it again nothing appeared and agian nothing under the original. Then did a copy moved and pasted and it worked. Went back to move the original item copied and the two first ones were there, it's like they showed up late. Graham

Still working on this. Here is another Resouce Monitor screenshot. For some odd reason when I activate a Raytrace one or more background services starts to run. In this case they are eating up 25% of my CPU. Sometimes it's the WMI Adapter Service or something else, seems to be no rhyme or reason. When I stop the Raytrace they all go back to Zero. Graham

Thanks David - It's really looking like something in my plan. Will try to track it down a bit later once I get this finished off. Graham

Hi Mark - That's how it should be. All of my other programs are at 0% when idle, it's just Chief and possibly something to do with this particular plan I'm working on. Been working with this plan for about 4 hours, it's still stuck at 12% and won't budge. Noticed this being slow a few days ago, will have to think back to understand what I was doing that triggered this. Graham

Was noticing some lag and slower than normal Raytracing. Checked my resource monitor and X8 even under idle (no workload) was utilizing 12%-14% of available CPU. See attached screenshot for Resource Monitor details. Anyone else noticing this? Graham

How do you keep track of all of the symbols that CA offers
TheKitchenAbode replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
Mark - I think both you and I are good examples that demonstrate the range of individual preferences as to how we like to work. This was also one of the key factors in my decision to go with Chief, it affords one the ability to configure and structure Chief to suit their particular work flow methods versus forcing one to adopt someone else's idea as to how one should work. How do you keep track of all of the symbols that CA offers
TheKitchenAbode replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
I understand that needs and work style vary for every user. For myself if the tools to create and modify objects is properly done then I have very little need save them. The cabinet tools are now a fairly good example, it takes very little time to just modify a basic box, which is what I do all of the time. Never use any of those catalog cabinets. It's more of a personal thing, use to use 2020 and really hated all of the time spent going through endless levels of drop down menus and the still having to modify the item. It's was for this very specific reason that I chose Chief. My preference is to have tools that provide me with the ability to easily create what I want; not tools that attempt to predict what I want. How do you keep track of all of the symbols that CA offers
TheKitchenAbode replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
I do as Joey & Sherry. Just use common generic symbols from library most of the time. When it comes to customization never really have a need to save these beyond the plan they are created for as they are one-offs. After 10 or more years I only have about 20 items in my user catalog, mostly just some special textures. Graham -
Might be worth checking in Device Manager under Display to see if the driver is specific for your monitor or a generic driver. If it is generic you can search the monitor manufactures site to see they have a specific driver and install it to see if there is a difference in performance. Graham

Great to here. Other members following this should also refer to this other ongoing topic. X8 locking up Graham

Pleased to here that this procedure seems to be resulting in some positive results. As you mention it's important to select the "Clean Install" option in the Nvidia setup. If memory serves me correctly that option is not always obvious at first glance. Also, the option to just install the basic driver is probably best when troubleshooting, you can always add back the other features once things are working properly. Please keep us posted and hoping things continue to improve. Graham

Trying to save a Fireplace as a Block
TheKitchenAbode replied to Electromen's topic in General Q & A
Glad you were able to create the block. Yes applying materials to items like partition panels get rotated when the height exceeds the width. What I do is create a copy of the material (stone) and then in the properties settings you can rotate the "Pattern" and "Texture" 90 degrees. Use this one for the taller partitions. Graham -
Trying to save a Fireplace as a Block
TheKitchenAbode replied to Electromen's topic in General Q & A
I believe it is because you attempting to create a block containing objects and walls. Not sure you can block these items together. You could change the walls to thick partition panels or use solids with the stone facing material and then block these with the fireplace box object. Graham -
That's a well proven theory and I've also learnt to always keep it in mind. Unfortunately the computer and graphics industry is changing so rapidly that there are many instances that software and drivers, in the rush to get to market, are not undergoing enough testing. This is compounded by the shear proliferation of differing hardware; the number or permutations of software & hardware combinations almost guarantee that some condition will miss the eye of even the most skilled team of programmers and evaluators. In construction there is also the old adage "Proven by the Test of Time". From a computer stability and reliability perspective this and the first theory should likely be adhered to. However, I like many others just can't resist the notion that my system "just might be a little faster" if I download the latest driver or whatever, even if at the end of the day it's just for the placebo effect. Thanks Ken, Just to clarify. Chief does not really determine what graphics system , integrated or dedicated, or what driver version is to be used. This is controlled by Windows and the graphics chip or board. Graphic data is sent from Chief to the system and it is the system, depending upon it's settings, that directs the display task to either the integrated chip or the dedicated graphics board. The drivers just interpret the graphics related data into a format that the graphics chip or boards understand and to take advantage of special features built into the graphics chip or board. There are some situations were the software can in a sense bypass this process and send very specific commands to take advantage of a particular feature (instruction set) built into the graphics chip or board. Gaming is a good example where this can happen. Most of these driver updates are tweaked so these instruction sets can be accessed. Even though Chief shows under preferences a graphic chip/board type and driver, it is just retrieving this information from your system to tell you what graphics set-up the system is going to use. It is not telling the system to use this. Graham
