  1. Chopsaw - In complete agreement, cores alone are not the only factor. A good CPU test report will demonstrate this when they compare differing software packages with several differing CPU's. With CA I think it has been clearly demonstrated that for Ray Tracing the number of cores is extremely important. For other CA operations it seems to me that CPU speed may be of greater importance, especially if you already have a 4 core or greater CPU.
  2. Maybe these new chips from Intel will solve the lag problem. http://hothardware.com/news/intel-brewing-xeon-platinum-monster-with-28-cores-and-56-threads
  3. For solid colors you may wish to try the Lacquer Finishes in the Bonus Catalog.
  4. At a minimum, please state the pixel width & height, number of passes and Ray Trace time.
  5. Hi Mark - Looks good! Hey, it's too bad CA does not allow you to select layout sections and copy/paste them, would make adding sections easy & fast.
  6. One thing that is not quite clear in all of this is whether the files are being accessed directly from the cloud or from a directory on your hard drive that is linked/synced to the cloud. These are two distinctly different setups. If your setup is the former then you can't run any executable files directly from the cloud, they must be downloaded to your system first and run from there. Also, in most cases the cloud address is not like the address structure on your hard drive so if the program needs a particular file that only exists on the cloud then it is not going to find it as most programs only look for files on system mounted drives. The cloud in itself is not a system mounted drive in same sense as your C drive is. I believe most of us are using the latter setup which means we are only working with files that reside on our main system mounted drives. As such we are not working directly with the cloud files, they are just remotely stored copies that are used to facilitate multi device syncing and remote access.
  7. Michael - As I mentioned in my first posting on this, the library files can't be syncing while they are in use. Since they are part of the program files they also need to be in their designated directories for Chief to find them. As I also mentioned, with OneDrive you can do what you want without changing the directories but you must disable syncing while you are using the program to avoid the sync service and Chief from trying to access the files at the same time.
  8. That has nothing to do with the cloud. Even on your main drive, If you move your plan and layout files to another directory or folder that is different than the one the plan or layout file was originally created/saved in then the file paths saved in the plans and layout files will need to be reassigned to the new location. That's why I like OneDrive as there is no need to change a files location in order to have it sync to the cloud. You need a better cloud service.
  9. Michael - With Microsoft OneDrive you don't move, rename or duplicate any folders; you just tell OneDrive what folders you want synced to the cloud and it takes care of it all. You can change this at any time and it can be set differently for each of your computers and devices that are connected to your OneDrive. You need to be aware that none of these consumer cloud services are designed to allow you to run programs from, programs should always be left on your drive and in the directories defined during their installation.
  10. Not sure the location has anything to do with it, it's the syncing program. How would a different folder location change this fact? The issue is that there is the potential that two different programs are trying to access the same file at the same time, that capability is not currently in the realm of most consumer grade software.
  11. From what I have been able to deduce through experimentation is that the Library files seem to be accessed from the disk drive by Chief as you access the Library menu, in other words the Library files do not appear to be preloaded into the program/memory when Chief is initially started. This could create a conflict with cloud syncing as there could be times when the syncing program is syncing the library files and Chief is trying to access them. Plan files seem to be a bit different, when they are open in Chief the syncing program can see this and as such it skips it until it is closed, thereby avoiding the issue of two programs trying to access the same file at the same time. One solution might be to turn off the cloud syncing program while you are using Chief and then turn it back on once you are finished. Microsoft OneDrive has an icon in the taskbar that provides quick access to sync pausing so it is a simple right click to engage or disengage syncing, there is also a menu that allows you to pause syncing for 2, 8 or 24 hours and then it will automatically resume syncing after the selected period. Not sure what options ICloud offers, from my understanding ICloud is not as sophisticated as OneDrive or DropBox.
  12. Select 3D, 3D View Defaults. There are other sliders to control the brightness of 3D camera views.
  13. Here are some Ray Traces I ran this weekend. Took about 20 minutes for 100 passes, they were pretty well done after 25 passes except for the glass in the pendants over the island, still a bit grainy. All lights are spot type.
  14. When you save to a jpg file the pixel size will be the same as your Raytrace setting, 1500 X 725, it does not reduce the pixels. Your resolution setting is not related to the number of pixels in the pic, it determines the physical intended print size. Pixel Width/Resolution = Print Width. In other words your pic is 1500 pixels X 750 pixels no more, no less. If you want a sharper pic you will need to increase your pixel width and height and this will increase your Raytrace time. Graham
  15. One other thing comes to mind. Are you running multiple monitors? If so disconnect them and see if the problem still occurs, may need to reboot. I recall about a year ago there was a MSI user who had problems with multi-monitors, supposedly it was a MSI problem. Search the forum to see the postings on this. Graham
  16. From your posted system specs you should be able to run X9 without the problem you are experiencing. I am running X9 on systems far less capable than yours. There are times when you need to do a clean video driver install. If you use the NVidia update tool there is an option for a clean install. Some times the newest driver is not always the best, you can go through the driver list and try some of the older versions. Have you used the Intel tool to scan you chipset drivers to make sure they are all up to date. Graham
  17. On my HD3000 integrated graphics I believe the issue is that this chip only supports up to Open GL 3.1. Looks to me that CA9 needs version 3.3 or higher. It's frustrating as X8 worked on this system as long as I had shadows turned off, which was no big deal. Now my laptop is completely useless with X9. Graham
  18. I have a laptop with an NVidia 310M and X9 displays properly in all camera view types. The only one I have that does not work is an integrated Intel HD3000, the camera views are a mess. Worked ok with X8. Graham
  19. I add just a few elements that hopefully compliment the kitchen design but not distract from it. Most importantly I work to get the main wall colors, flooring and trim work as accurate as possible. When doing custom kitchens this is the only way a client can visualize exactly how things will look. Graham
  20. Once I imported it into the library I opened up the Symbol DBX and rotated the X axis to flip it upright. Graham
  21. I downloaded your Carlton object and could not see any difference in camera view or in a Raytrace response time. I duplicated it 6 times just to increase the faces and still did not notice any problems. Here's my quick Raytrace, 20 passes in 3 minutes, 9 seconds per pass. Graham
  22. They are spotlights. Cut-off angle 180 degrees, Tilt Angle -55 degrees, Drop Rate 4.0. The intensity is most often 4% - 10%. They are placed just under the cabinet bottom surface towards the very front of the cabinet. A modified under-cabinet puck light should do the trick. Just make sure that the rotational handle points towards the backsplash, the tilt angle is in that direction. I also add a slight yellow colour to the light for a slightly warmer look. Give it a try to see if it works for you. Graham
  23. Nicely done!!! Really like the strong punchy foreground against the softer background, creates a sense of depth. Just my opinion, but I believe this is a good example where photo realistic does not always have to be the objective. There are often opportunities missed to impart some form of artistic expression into ones work. Every artist has their own style of expression that makes their work unique. Graham
  24. Here's a shot from another vantage point. All spot lights. All clean within 25 passes. 25 passes, 13 min, 1200 X 769 Graham
  25. They are under Preferences, Ray Trace. You can set the number of dedicated cores. By default this is set to max. Usually a reduction of one or two cores should do the trick, especially on older systems. Graham
