Tommy, If he turned off all the house layers (except Windows) and the marque selected assuming that he was only moving the site...... The windows would also move.

So, you didn't turn of the Windows Layer when you move the Site? Measure twice, cut once. Now you need to find the last "backup/archive"

Layout Box - Annoset & Layer Set Question
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in General Q & A
Curt, I don't personally have a problem with using the Annoset to control the Layer Set. I was more thinking about the user who doesn't want to (or isn't comfortable with) customizing annosets. He might want to simply copy a Layout Box in the Layout and change the Layer Set of the contained view. Scott & Rod I now see those options with the Menu / Toolbar Icons for the Layer Sets. It's just kind of strange that the same thing can't be selected from within the Layout Box dbx. -
A Layout has it's own Layer Set(s) that are totally independent from the Plan(s) that are linked. Each Layout Box has a tie to the Plan and allows selection of an Annoset in that Plan. This allows the Layer Set for that Layout Box to be changed - according to what's specified in the Annoset. There doesn't seem to be any way to change the Layer Set without having an Annoset that specifically sets a Layer Set. Have I missed something?

is the electric panel in an electronics closet a good or bad idea?
Joe_Carrick replied to STEVE446's topic in General Q & A
You should probably check with an Electrician. My guess is that if anything, the house wiring might act as a "range extender" for the WIFI. I don't think it would have any detrimental effect. I have powered Wireless Routers in my Smart Panel and it works fine. -
Dormer shows on the wrong floor on floor plan
Joe_Carrick replied to ACADuser's topic in General Q & A
You can place the dormers in Elevation View - but make sure the Current Floor is the <A> Attic --- not <1>, <2>, <3>,,,, Chief will assign a lot of things to Current Floor even when you are in an Elevation or Section View. -
Alan, Take the time to study and get up to speed on Annoset / Layerset setups. It's going to save you a lot of time. If you have them set up right it's just one click to get to the point where you can marquee select all the site objects and then move them. That's just one case where custom Annosets will save you a lot of time and frustration. When I'm working in my wood shop making a piece of furniture I always take the time to sharpen my tools and create any jigs that I'm going to need before I start the project. It's the same with Chief Architect. If I have the right tools the job is just so much easier and the next time I already have those available and I know exactly how to use them.

Sending Multiple Floor Plans to Layout
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in Tips & Techniques
The Link is kind of a "one way street". The Plan doesn't know what Layout to use - unless the Layout has the same name and is in the same folder. However, Each Layout Box has a direct link to the Plan File it came from. In fact, there are 4 Ruby Attributes for Layout Boxes that relate directly to the Plan: referenced_filename -------- The Plan Filename without path or extension referenced_full_filename -- The Plan Filename with complete path and extension automatic_label --------------- Viewname from the Plan File layer_set ------------------------- Initially the Layer Set as sent from the Plan File. There could be a problem if you switch to Layer Set that isn't from the same Plan. Layer Sets are only added to a Layout as views are sent to Layout. So there is no guarantee that a specific Layer Set will be available. For Example: Plan has the following Layer Sets: New Plan View New Framing Floor Plans are sent to Layout using the "New Plan View" Layer Set "New Framing" will not be in the Layout, so copying the Layout Box to another page will not give you the option to select that Layer Set. -
OK, I think I know what's happening. Open the dbx and under Materials make the "Wall" the same material as the Wall that you inserted the Vent into. It should be automatic but you might have a Wall Type with a "Transparent" outer layer. This Symbol is a "Window" and Windows always cut rectangular openings. In order to fill the space where non-rectangular openings are created Chief fills the gap with the Wall Finish Material.

Pic please. Or maybe the Plan?

Dormer shows on the wrong floor on floor plan
Joe_Carrick replied to ACADuser's topic in General Q & A
Alan, After looking at your Plan, I would have the 2nd Floor only 36" Tall with no Ceiling. Then I would have a 3rd Floor (Open Below) with a Ceiling at 72". You will need to adjust the Floor Structure of the 3rd Floor so there's no gap between the 2nd and 3rd Floors, and you might need to work with the Ceiling Structure of the 2nd Floor. -
Dormer shows on the wrong floor on floor plan
Joe_Carrick replied to ACADuser's topic in General Q & A
Alan, Not really "Outside the Box". This is the method that some of us have been advocating for quite a long time; additonal Basement and Attic Floors rather than blindly using what Chief provides. I even sometimes put in a "dummy floor" to create an "Intersticial Space" for Mechanical and Plumbing between a Commercial and Residential Floor in a mixed occupancy building. -
Totally a custom installation. Chief won't do a 2 panel Pocket Door where both slide to the same side. and it also won't do a Sliding Door where both Panels slide into a pocket. The way I would do it would be to use a 2 Panel Pocket Door with a Pocket on each side. The Doors would meet at the center.

Alan, Create a 3rd Floor 1/16" tall (Attic Room - No Ceiling) and put your Floating Dormers there. They will not show on the 2nd Floor Plan but will show in your Elevations. -
Is it possible to copy only what is inside a box or polyline?
Joe_Carrick replied to Lighthouse's topic in General Q & A
Lighthouse, When you select the "Fillet Edit Mode" you can then grab a corner handle of a Layout Box and pull it inward. This will fillet all corners at the same time. That is how it works. It is very different from the normal Fillet Tool. -
Scott, Display a Plan in 3D - with the interiors (including interior walls, cabinets, appliances, etc) turned off. Then convert to Symbol as "Exterior Furniture". Charlie says not to include in the Library - but I don't have a problem with doing that since it makes the symbol more readily available. When placed in your Terrain they will sit on the ground - but you may need to adjust for the foundations.

Sending Multiple Floor Plans to Layout
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in Tips & Techniques
Mick, The Layout Box knows what Plan it came from. When you open a Layout the associated Plans are opened - but not necessarily displayed in the Project Browser. However, if you double click on a Layout Box, that Plan and View will be located. Levis's system will work fine - even with multiple Plans. -

I think Glenn means "Edit Behaviors". That does work to fillet the Layout Box. -

Scott, This method can be done either in the Layout or in the CAD Detail Window. I prefer the CAD Detail Window simply because the Mask in in Real World Units whereas in the Layout it's "Paper Size". -

Lighthouse, Create a Rectangle just slightly larger than the Layout Box. Select the "create a hole" icon and create a square the size you want the circle to be. Fillet that hole (radius = 1/2 hole size) Set the rectangle to have a solid fill (match background) and edit the Linestyle to the same color. Essentially you've created a "Mask" to cover the part of the detail you don't want to see. -

Fillet the Corners -
I almost always have at least 2 floors but often have 3-4 and when I send them to Layout I want them to be at the same location on different sheets. So here's the way I do it: 1. I have a rectangle (144' x 96') which I blocked and placed on Layer "CAD, Arch-D' and added to my Library 2. I place that on all my First Floor Plan so that it encompasses the Plan. 3, I then Copy and "Paste In Place" to all the other Floor Plans. 4. Next I lock that Layer When I send the Floor Plans to Layout, they are all located at the same location on their respective sheets. Then I go back to the Plan and turn of the display of that Layer - which turns it off in the Layout as well. Note, the (144' x 96') corresponds to the Arch-D Sheet size for a 1/4"=1' scale plan. For different scales or sheet sizes I use a different size rectangle. The key is to make the rectangle match the size of the layout sheet.
