  1. Eric - thanks again for the video. I am having some trouble following your steps. The first image shows the current state before making changes to the wall. When I change the foundation walls as you suggest, I get an error stating "The main layer of existing walls will be moved to accommodate this wall type change" (images 2 and 3). Image 4 clearly shows that I've done something wrong. The result (image 5) are my walls moving and my windows disappearing. What am I missing? Kevin
  2. So, build roof first using auto-features where roof baseline is the same and THEN adjust any varying ceiling heights under that roof? Thanks.
  3. Yes, that's right. The ceiling is raised in that one area over the breakfast table.
  4. Thanks Eric. That was very helpful. You mention towards the end of the video that it's a good idea to set the default ceiling height for the 1st floor. I did which was 9'. But, there are also three other ceiling heights on the first floor (four if you include those rooms open to below from the 2nd). I made sure each room had the appropriate ceiling height before I started the roof. Was this not the correct way to go about it?
  5. Eric - Thanks for the video and solution. Kevin
  6. What can I say - this is Colonial Williamsburg we're talking about...
  7. Thank you Mark. I will give it a go this afternoon. I looked at Chief's training videos on roofs again. They don't seem to cover these situations. Kevin
  8. Thanks again, Ryan. That does help. At least I'm getting closer. If only I could adjust the top and bottom concrete cut-outs.
  9. Thanks for taking a look Eric. It took me a while to delete some stuff. What's left was necessary to demonstrate the problem. Kevin vent_wall.plan
  10. Rob - I got the roof to a satisfactory level this morning, however, I'd really like to figure out how to make the ridge flat. What tool do I use for this? I have tried drawing a roof plane directly on an edge of one of the roof planes, but this doesn't give me the proper pitch. I'd appreciate knowing if there's a way to do this. Can polyline segments be converted to a roof plane? Thanks for all the help yesterday. I'm getting much more comfortable with the roof tool. Kevin
  11. Thanks Ryan - That works (sorta'), but I'm still not getting a rectangular cut-out (bit of jog at the top). Besides, the vents I am using have casing (historical home). Any other ideas on how to get it to work with the casing? Kevin
  12. I've got some 30 x 16 louvered crawl space vents (rectangular) that need to recess into the brick foundation to the sheathing layer. I keep getting the result shown in the attached picture. I suspect the problem is the pony wall foundation I am using to get a brick ledge. Any ideas on how to do this? Thanks, Kevin
  13. Mark - good catch. I think you and Glenn are correct.
  14. First thing in the morning. Enjoy your weekend!
  15. Thanks Rob. You're right. I'd prefer to do it myself. Have a great weekend yourself!
  16. Mark - funny! I don't think I'll be climbing on this roof anytime soon. The accuracy is enough for me... That said, I am still unable to figure out how to join the last two pieces pictured below. I'm calling it a day and will get back to it tomorrow. Thanks again for all the help today! Kevin
  17. I was typing while you were replying. Yes, I think the plans aren't accurate. The center triangular wedge from plan view appears to be equilateral. I am still unsure how to even draw the roof planes you have marked in RED below. There is no exterior wall to form a baseline. How do I add these two pieces on either side with the roof plane tool?
  18. Rob - that is correct. I do not know how to get those five pieces to join. I am aware that the upper part should form a 90° angle. However, when I do that, the tent part of the roof is above where it should connect. I am questioning whether or not the plans are accurate and this is a true 10:12 pitch.
  19. Wow - really overlooked the obvious on that one. Working beautifully now! Thanks for pointing it out! Kevin
  20. Thanks again, Rob. It's definitely there as the casings can be seen from the inside. For some reason, it's not cutting through the wall layers. There is definitely no attic wall above as it selects as one wall - 2nd attachment. I'd appreciate you taking a look at this. The latest version of the file is attached. I'm also have trouble joining the roof over the bay breakfast area. Is there a way to manually join by dragging roof segments and not using the join tool. When I use the tool made for this purpose, the converging angles change and are, therefore, not as drawn on the plan - 3rd attachment. I'm going to continue to work on it... I appreciate all the help. Kevin CHF_Midyette_Retreat_05-27-20.plan
  21. Thanks Guys. Sorry, had to step away for an hour. Robert your solution is brilliant, however, I am finding it impossible to get the arched window back at the top. I have tried pasting it on the first and second floors. When I paste it on the second floor it comes in at the roof peak. When I manually move it down, it squishes. Do balloon walls not allow window insertions? Kevin
  22. Rob - when I do that it changes the thickness of the frieze board on the gable end too. Also, I plan on adding roof returns which will really mess things up if I approach it this way. Got any other ideas? Is moving the roof baseline worth a shot? Any idea why this is behaving this way? Thanks again.
  23. Eric & Robert - thanks for the help. I was able to get the soffit depth/height correct, but now have a new problem. For some reason the frieze board is sitting behind my brick as shown in the attached. I'm guessing I can move my baseline, but suspect that's cheating. The roof on the upper level is working fine. Is it a problem to have two joining roofs on different floors which is the case here? What could be causing this? The most recent version of the file is attached. 24. I have an existing house with the original set of plans. The client wants the as-built conditions in CAD before embarking on various renovations. I am running into problems with the roof. The first attachment shows the wall section on the original blueprint with the roof raised 22" above the 2 x 8 ceiling joists. This creates the necessity for a soffit with various tiers. Here's what I am running into: 1) I am unable to get the soffit to flush out with the bottom of the shadow board (second attachment). I have tried lowering the frieze board which is how I have it set in the attached plan file to no avail. 2) Although I have not completed the roof (still working on the soffit), when I join two outside 90° corners, Chief creates a return wall (third and fourth attachments) at this juncture. 3) The soffit isn't even showing up on the left side of the 90° corner (fourth attachment). Also attached is a photo of the existing house. I would greatly appreciate any assistance with this. Thanks, Kevin CHF_Midyette_Retreat_05-27-20.plan
